Anyone seen Another Earth (2011)?

Oh right, that was actually the first film I stumbled upon and wanted to see, but somehow > ended up being what I watched first instead! I’m definitely going to try to find this one too. However, I have to mention a rather sad reality... I would love to just head to the theater, but they don't show films like this there anymore; it's all just endless blockbusters and stuff... honestly, at the AMC nearby, there might be exactly one movie worth seeing 😢

Surprisingly good movie!

The sci-fi tag actually threw me off a bit when I was picking this out—mostly because Second Earth acts more as an allegory for choice and consequence, a sort of "what if" resonance rather than pure genre fare. Still, it’s beautifully shot, and even the sci-fi elements—which aren't exactly the backbone of the plot—are handled quite elegantly.

I wasn't a huge fan of Mapother being cast as Jacko Burroughs—though that’s likely just because I still have him stuck in my head as Ethen from "Lost." I kept waiting for him to realize who Rhoda was and just knock her out with a desk lamp 🙂

All in all, a solid film—dramatically powerful and definitely above average.

I watched it the other day, and honestly, I'm left feeling pretty shaken up.

I'm really struggling with how to interpret what happened. From what I gathered, she arrived from Second Earth just four months after he departed for Z1 (unless I missed something and the trip actually takes four months 😳), so maybe that timing played into her decision... But even if it didn't, there's no way she caused the accident there. If everything had turned out the same, she would have made the exact same choice—she would have handed him the card all over again.
And man, wouldn't it be devastating if it turns out there are two of her on Z1, and two of him on Second Earth? Just imagine... 😳
As for her appearance, she makes quite an impression; she seems fundamentally DIFFERENT... like she's carrying a completely different energy. It’s almost as if she came back specifically to tell the version of herself on Z1 something vital, like an older, wiser sister visiting... though I suppose she likely headed into space from Z1 just to avoid wearing a jumpsuit, so the polished look might just be an illusion. Still, she comes across as much more cheerful

I mean, I can't help but feel the director intentionally dressed Rhoda in Z2—it’s clearly meant to highlight how different she is from "our" Rhoda. Since her look is much more formal, my first thought was that Rhoda 2 might be some successful astrologer or something similar—basically a college grad who didn't get wasted that night and wasn't hit by such terrible luck. If that were the case, she wouldn't have even needed to give Jack a card. Throughout the entire movie, Z2 acts as this symbol of a fresh start—a symbol of good decisions that don't lead to disastrous consequences. To me, it feels like Z2 represents a happy world for both main characters.

I honestly wasn't expecting this whole experimental, "art house" vibe when I first read about the movie, so it caught me totally off guard. It definitely gives off those similar vibes to Trierov Melancholija, but for some reason, it just didn't hit home for me...

It starts out feeling pretty amateurish, then picks up a bit of energy, and yeah, things actually happen, but I don't know... I just couldn't really get into that low-budget approach of mixing a deeply personal tragedy with a sci-fi setting. It felt a bit off.

On the flip side, I wouldn't call it pretentious. For what it is, it’s actually decent. Like, totally fine for someone's big debut or a senior thesis project at a school like NYU...

wow. what a trip. such a small, massive movie. the story is beautiful, the atmosphere is heavy, and Brit Marling is just her usual incredible self, but then that ending hits you... Pro tip: don't go reading anything about this film. Just sit down and let the ninety minutes happen to you. You might end up speechless, kind of like I am right now.

It’s honestly pretty rare to find an indie sci-fi or fantasy movie that actually manages to pull off that kind of magic without a massive studio budget behind it. This one? Yeah, it’s definitely in that club.
