Since my AFP levels have been hovering consistently between 8 and 11—given that the standard reference limit is 7—I’ve been stuck in this endless loop of monitoring and abdominal ultrasounds. Up until today, the ultrasound results were always perfectly unremarkable, but today the report read like this: The liver is normal in size and shape, showing mild hyperechogenicity suggestive of steatosis; it remains homogeneous with no dilation of the intrahepatic or extrahepatic bile ducts. In segments III and IV of the liver, there are visible cysts measuring approximately 9 mm and 7 mm. The pancreas is homogeneous and clearly demarcated from the surrounding tissue; the spleen is normal in size and homogeneous; both kidneys show normal size and shape with preserved parenchyma and no dilation of the collecting systems; the abdominal aorta appears normally calibrated in the visualized section; no free fluid is detected in the abdomen, nor are there any enlarged lymph nodes.
Now, I am absolutely preoccupied with these tiny little cysts that never showed up on any previous ultrasound scans. What is their clinical significance, and is there any possibility they might simply vanish? Furthermore, should I be pursuing testing for hepatitis? If a test comes back positive, is there an actual treatment available, and can that occur independently of HIV, or does it usually travel in a package deal? I am a deeply anxious individual, and at 50 years old, the sheer panic of this uncertainty is becoming overwhelming.
My hematologist informed me today that this specific AFP value shouldn't actually be a cause for concern since it has remained stagnant for four years now, yet I cannot shake this nagging dread regarding the possibility of hepatitis. The fear of a potential diagnosis is paralyzing—is there even a cure if it turns out I have it? So far, no one has even referred me for the necessary blood work. For what it's worth, my Mayo Clinic labs and liver function tests are all within the normal range. Thank you, vividsailor7.

Hi there,
My 15-year-old sister is dealing with anemia. She had her first blood draw back in February, where her iron levels were sitting at 2.1 and her hemoglobin was slightly low. She was prescribed 100 mg of Ferrous supplement and took it for a month. She just had more blood work done yesterday, and here are the results:

RBC 4.30 (4.07-5.42)
Hemoglobin 99 (118-149)
Hematocrit 0.313 (0.354-0.450)
MCV 72.8 (76.5-92.1)
MCH 23.0 (24.3-31.5)
MCHC 316 (304-360)
RDW 20.300 (11.600-14.300)
Platelets 370 (178-420)
MPV 10.5 (7.0-10.4)
WBC 4.8 (4.4-11.6)
Eos. granulocytes 1.0 (0-9)
Neu. granulocytes 65.0 (34-69)
Lymphocytes 27.0 (19-52)
Monocytes 7.0 (5-13)
Sedimentation 7 (2-20)
Glucose 6.12 (3.90-5.90)
Creatinine 46 (40-72)
Iron 2.3 (6.0-31.0)

The urinalysis showed 6-8 leukocytes, along with quite a few squamous epithelial cells and bacteria.

She’s been referred to a hematologist, obviously, but I’m wondering if this blood count could be directly caused by the iron deficiency? Also, does it matter that she came down with a cold two days later? I'm curious if that might have skewed the results.

Thanks in advance. 🙂

I have anemia too. Just checked my levels today—iron is at 4, hemoglobin is 102, and so on. I'm no doctor, but one month of treatment doesn't seem like enough; I think it takes at least three months. I need to start supplements myself, but someone more qualified will likely weigh in.

I've done some reading on bilirubin, but what I really want to know is the connection between the Cummings test and high bilirubin levels. Why was I asked to get the Cummings test specifically, and what exactly are they trying to rule out with it? Thanks!

EDIT: Both my mom and I are Rh+

Honestly, you’re probably just fine. If you actually had hemolytic anemia, your labs would look pretty different—you'd be seeing low hemoglobin, high reticulocytes, high LDH, high total bilirubin due to elevated unconjugated bilirubin, and low haptoglobin.
In your case, it sounds most likely like Gilbert's syndrome (I'm assuming it's your unconjugated or indirect bilirubin that's up). It’s a completely harmless condition that shouldn't cause you any stress at all; plenty of people live with it without even knowing. It doesn't cause symptoms, though you might see a slight bump in bilirubin if you're exhausted or have been drinking alcohol. Treatment is almost never necessary.
Again... please take this with a grain of salt because I haven't seen your actual charts or medical history. Get the official tests done, and then you'll have your answer for sure.

This points toward a mild bacterial infection—are you dealing with a sore throat, frequent coughing, or something along those lines?

I might be hitting the bathroom a little more often, but I had a urine culture done and everything came back clean.
Not sure if you caught my last post where I quoted the doctor's final verdict after my physical—that eosinophilia they mentioned is still bugging me a bit. 🤷

High eosinophil counts can point to an allergy or perhaps parasites in your stool; that’s likely why they suggested further testing for potential allergies if the parasite screen comes back negative.

I had elevated eosinophilic granulocytes last year myself, though I didn't end up doing anything about it. This year, my levels are right back within the normal range.

Do you think I should go back for stool testing now, or just wait about a month and redo the Mayo Clinic labs?

The first one was done 8 days before the second set of results.

In the second CBC, there's no eosinophils listed in the differential, whereas in the first one, they were definitely high.
The urinalysis is normal, and regarding further testing, they could still run an IgE or a Duncker test along with stool samples, or perhaps more workup after checking the follow-up CBC/differential.

One month is far too short to evaluate therapy.
Based on clinical status and medical history, a US ultrasound might be an option.
Consult a hematologist.

Betty Bishop7 said:Hi, I have a question: is a Sedimentation of 30 concerning?

Ma'am,

Sedimentation levels depend heavily on age—the upper limit of normal tends to climb as we get older—so it’s difficult to determine how much that specific number actually deviates from what's expected.

There is also likely an underlying reason why this test was ordered in the first place.

If this is the only outlier, if all other routine LabCorp results look fine, and you aren't experiencing any symptoms (perhaps it was just part of a standard physical), then simply monitoring the value over the next two or three weeks should suffice. You'll want to see if it stays steady, climbs, or drops.

Keep in mind that certain non-pathological conditions can elevate Sedimentation, such as pregnancy, menstruation, or simply aging.

Best regards. 🙂

The urinalysis looks fine—as for next steps, maybe run an IgE or a Dunner test along with a stool sample, or just wait until after the follow-up CBC/differential results come back.

Thanks, I'll get those tests done.
Could my current Minocycline prescription be messing with these results?

Hello

In my recent blood work (serology tests), my tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTg-FDA) came back at 139, which is quite high since anything over 20 is considered positive. Interestingly, my IgA and anti-gliadin levels were perfectly normal. Because celiac disease was the primary suspicion—and clearly the only one on the table, according to my gastroenterologist—I went ahead with a gastroscopy. However, the results showed a "Marsh Oberhauber type 0," which basically means it isn't celiac disease... What’s bothering me is that my gastroenterologist admitted he has no idea why the FDA levels were so elevated. My GP suggested I get my blood drawn again in two months, and if those levels remain positive, he’ll refer me to an immunologist. Does anyone have any insight into what might be happening? They did mention I have some gastritis; I had been taking ABC plus some supplements, which caused a few days of diarrhea, though that stopped once I quit the supplements. Still, the gastroenterologist insisted the gastritis wasn't the cause of such a high FDA reading. I should probably also mention that lately, I haven't had any diarrhea, heartburn, or vomiting. But, when I lie down, my stomach makes incredibly loud growling noises, even long after I've eaten... I also occasionally feel a dull ache near my appendix area. Most strangely, my spleen starts acting up after walking just about 20 meters. It feels odd because I'm only 21... I'm certainly not a retiree yet.

What’s a normal LDH level supposed to be?
Is 237 actually okay? It doesn't seem that high to me.

Oh, I should probably mention that my Mayo Clinic results, Denmark stats, TRC, and Sedimentation were all totally fine.

And, uh, I was just reading online that the upper limit for some people is around 241, so I'm thinking this might be perfectly fine.😁

And from what I'm reading online, the upper limit is somewhere around 241, so I'm thinking this is pretty much in the clear. 😁

The right answer is 😁

Can someone help me make sense of these urine results?
Everything looks fine except for white blood cells at 2-5
RBC 1-3
Bacteria 3
Epithelial cells 2
Mucus 3

I actually had a very similar reading about three weeks ago where bacteria was at 2, white blood cells were 8, and blood was 1
My doctor prescribed some antibiotics, I finished them, and now, just two weeks after finishing that course, this is what my results show... CRP is 1.1 and everything else is normal, though RBC is 4.23
Hgb 103
Hct 0.331
MCHC 311
MCV 78.3
MCH 24.3
RDW 17.2
WBC 8.1
MPV 11.2
Everything else from the Mayo Clinic is perfectly normal
And it also notes
Mild microcytosis, hypochromia, and anisocytosis

I went for my OBGYN exam and everything turned out fine—the ovarian ultrasound was okay, though one ovary has shifted down toward the uterus, and I'm still waiting on my Pap smear results. Please, I really need some help here! These urine results are honestly making me so anxious! As for the anemia, I know what that is; it’s something I’ve dealt with forever. I've had low hemoglobin before, but never quite this low—the last time it was around 109... I usually manage to get it back up with medication... thanks! I'm 38 years old

Actually, let me go ahead and list the rest of the values too
Platelet 267 basophil
Basophils 0.6
Monocytes 9.3
Lymphocytes 33.6
Neutrophils 52.9
Eosinophils 3.6
