analogmarlin32 said:Hi everyone,

I was wondering if you could take a look at these results and tell me if everything looks okay? I'm a little concerned about this slight uptick in my white blood cell count.
Here’s the context:

A 30-year-old male, just doing a routine checkup. At the time of the draw, I had a cold sore on my lip that was clearing up, and some dental issues—missing several teeth—though there isn't any active pain or inflammation in my mouth right now (at least, that's how it feels subjectively).

RBC 5.75 (4.34-5.72)
Hemoglobin 177 (138-175)
Hematocrit 0.535 (0.415-0.53)

MCV 93 (83-97.2)
MCH 30.8 (27.4-33.9)
MCHC 331 (320-345)
RDW 12 (9-15)
Platelets 338 (158-424)
MPV 8.8 (6.8-10.4)

WBC 13.26 (3.4-9.7)

SE 3.000 (2-13)

Eosinophils 2.1 (0-7)
Basophils 0.4 (0-1)
Neutrophils 66.7 (44-72)
Lymphocytes 27.1 (40-46)
Monocytes 3.7 (2-12)

I forgot to mention:

Morphology: toxic granules present in individual neutrophil granulocytes.
What does that actually mean?

One more thing... just ten days ago, my WBC was at 14.7... so they have actually dropped over the last ten days. Should I be worried about these white cell levels? Because regarding the other elevated markers, you guys mentioned those looked normal...
Thanks!

Thanks!

Toxic granules in neutrophils can signal an infection. Generally, the higher the presence of these granules, the greater the likelihood of a bacterial cause. Since the report indicates only sporadic instances rather than a widespread presence among all neutrophils, we're likely looking at either a mild case or one that is already starting to clear up. Regardless, there is reason to suspect the white blood cell count has been shifted by the infection.

Everything else remains exactly as I stated before.

2. One hour after the 7.10 load.
Two hours post-load. 4.80.

The results look solid. Based on the data I have—this is from 2009, and I’m not sure if the guidelines have shifted since then, given how much blood sugar standards have evolved lately—your one-hour post-load glucose should be under 140 mg/dL, which it is. Similarly, the two-hour mark should stay below 120 mg/dL, and that also holds true here. My conclusion: these numbers are normal.
IRI (insulin) 1.1–17 mg/dL within the reference range. Concentration per milliliter.

$8.37 per plate.
2. One hour post-load: 57.6.
Two hours post-load. Hit 18.0.

The results look solid to me. Based on the data I have from 2009, insulin levels should ideally drop below 100 uU/ml one hour after the load—though you’ll see varying benchmarks depending on the source. This case meets that mark. Similarly, at the two-hour point, levels should be under 60 uU/ml. Again, standards vary slightly by lab, but this result hits the target.

Maria Fisher46 said:Seeing toxic granules inside those neutrophils can definitely be a red flag for an infection—and honestly, the more of those granules you see across the neutrophil count, the higher the likelihood that we’re looking at a bacterial issue. Since the lab report mentions they're only showing up in a few cells rather than all of them, it probably means either the infection is pretty mild or it's already starting to clear up... one way or another, there's a good chance the white blood cell count is being pushed around by whatever infection is going on.

Everything else stays the same as what I mentioned before...

Thanks so much!!! 🙂

I’m 24 and dealing with oily hair and significant thinning. No major health issues on my record so far. I'm wondering if liver enzymes or bilirubin levels could be playing a role here?
ALT is at 8 (ref. range 10-36)
AST is 18 (ref. range 8-30)
GGT is 9 (ref. range 9-35)
ALP is 81 (ref. range 54-119)
Total bilirubin is 32 (ref. range 3-20)

Thanks much.

Hey,
I'm 29 and went in for blood work because I've been feeling totally wiped out—just constant fatigue and brain fog. Honestly, I expected my results to show an iron deficiency, but instead... my ALT liver enzymes came back at 54 (normal range is 10-36), and my UIBC is 22.3 (normal is 26.0-59.0). Should I be sweating these liver numbers? My primary care doctor barely even glanced at the labs and just told me I'm healthier than most of her patients, which isn't exactly comforting... so I'd love to get some input here. I don't really drink, and I only take painkillers when absolutely necessary. I was on birth control until about two months ago.
Thanks in advance

Hi everyone!
Last week, I noticed a painful, soft swelling under my left arm—along with a tiny, barely noticeable bump on the left side of my neck... nothing discolored or anything. I went in for some tests right away: ultrasounds of my armpit, neck, and breasts, but everything came back totally clear—no swollen lymph nodes or anything unusual found. Even when the doctors try to feel for them, they can't find any enlarged nodes in my neck or armpit area at all. They mentioned it might just be some inflammation in the sweat glands, though looking at photos online, mine doesn't look red at all... just a soft, tender swelling. Should I still be worried after all these tests? 🙂I had blood work done the same day I felt the swelling (just a CBC, not a full panel) and everything looks great!
Best to you all! 🙂

Back again!
After all that digging around... I finally went for blood work
Here are the results:
I won't type out everything—I'm actually pretty steady, aside from a slight thrombocytopenia at 134... and looking back at my last CBC from two weeks ago—my white cell count ticked up, though it’s still technically within the normal range. It was 7.6 before, and now it's at 8.3.
CBC:
Neutrophils 73 (44-72)
Bands 4 (0-2)
Lymphocytes 15 (20-46)
Monocytes 7 (2-12)
Eosinophils 1 (0-7)

ESR 3 (4-24)

CRP 0.7 (
Iron, TIBC, and UIBC are all looking normal.
Does this look alright, or should I be worried? I have a slightly swollen lymph node in my neck, and an inflamed sweat gland under my armpit that's been bothering me for about two and a half weeks now...

I was wondering if anyone could help me make sense of this urine cytology report? It was ordered because of some microhematuria. Moderators, please feel free to move this post if I’ve put it in the wrong section... I wasn't entirely sure where it belonged. The results say:

In three separate samples of cloudy urine sediment, there's a significant amount of urothelial cells—some appearing in small papillary clusters—with enlarged, hyperchromatic nuclei. A urological follow-up is recommended.

Hello,

Your liver function tests look normal overall. A slightly low IBM value carries no clinical significance.

The bilirubin is a bit high, so it would be wise to have that tested again.

I don't suspect a link to the symptoms you described. It seems more likely to be a hormonal issue. You should definitely get a full hormonal panel done—specifically sex hormones and adrenal hormones—and schedule a checkup with a gynecologist.

Best regards. 🙂

Hello,

It is difficult to provide a clear assessment without seeing the complete lab report.

When a single parameter sits outside the standard range—as your ALT does here—it's usually best to repeat the test in about four weeks to see if it stabilizes.

Additionally, without a detailed consultation and physical exam, I can't say for sure, but checking your TSH might be a logical next step, along with other tests depending on what has already been ruled out.

Best regards. 🙂

Pebbles. Small things. Easy to overlook until you're barefoot and stepping on one. They have a way of disrupting even the smoothest path. Just like those tiny, nagging details in a project that eventually derail the whole timeline. It’s rarely the landslide that kills you; it’s the pebbles. kaže:
Is this something I should be concerned about, or is it nothing to worry over? I’ve had a slightly swollen lymph node in my neck and an inflamed sweat gland under my armpit for two and a half weeks now.

To whom it may concern,

I have to admit, the whole thing feels a bit muddled to me.

It’s pretty binary: lymph nodes are either enlarged or they aren't. When looking at the head and neck, the threshold is simple. If the diameter exceeds one centimeter, they're considered enlarged. Anything under that? They're just normal nodes. Nothing more, nothing less.

It’s a bit confusing. You claim your neck nodes feel slightly swollen, yet you follow that by saying your doctors don't even recognize them as lymph nodes—or bother to palpate them at all. Then, regarding the armpit, they've diagnosed it simply as inflamed sweat glands.

Blood work and lymph node swelling don't always tell the same story. They might align, but they certainly don't have to.

Brenda Ortiz10 said:Can someone walk me through this cytology report? It was ordered to investigate some microhematuria. Moderators, if this belongs in a different subforum, please feel free to move it—I wasn't entirely sure where to post this. Here is the result:

To whom it may concern,

I’m not sure if you transcribed the entire report or just a portion of it. The results don't mention the presence or appearance of erythrocytes, yet you were sent for further testing due to blood in the urine.

The report shows some irregularities in the urothelial cells—the ones lining the urinary tract. Specifically, under the microscope, the nuclei appear enlarged and more intensely stained than usual.

The results alone don't provide a clear diagnosis. It’s best to schedule an appointment with a urologist to get a proper evaluation and figure out the next steps for testing.

I’ve gone ahead and transcribed the entire report. I actually went to see a urologist, and based on these results, he’s under the impression that the cells aren't malignant—so he thinks there's no need for a cystoscopy or any further follow-up. My ultrasound from a few months back was totally clear, and my urine culture came back normal too.
I just really wanted to stay quiet about it and maybe get a second opinion... Thanks so much for getting back to me.

Dear Doctor,
I went back today for an ultrasound of my neck, armpits, abdomen, and groin. My doctor says he doesn't see any enlarged lymph nodes, but after I insisted he take another look at the swelling on my neck—he claims it’s just a tiny node, maybe 6-7 mm, which doesn't worry him at all since he thinks it's been there forever... but I know better, because it definitely wasn't there two weeks ago, and I can actually feel it getting bigger. It's one of those situations where we just don't see eye to eye. He mentioned my spleen looks normal on the scan (is an abdominal ultrasound really reliable enough to confirm that?) and said it's a good sign, especially since I've been spiraling about lymphoma due to these night sweats and now this lump... On Friday, I'm heading in for a chest X-ray because this cough just won't quit. Should I be worried about that low lymphocyte count from my previous post? Honestly, I'm terrified of anything malignant, and I can't shake this fear of lymphoma because of how much this node has grown over the last three weeks. The doctor insists everything looks perfectly normal on the ultrasound and that if it were something serious, he'd see it... but I'm still a nervous wreck. I just want to put this anxiety to rest and clear any doubt once and for all. Is there a specific test that can 100% rule out lymphoma? Once that's settled, I think I'll finally see a therapist... because this health anxiety is starting to get the best of me.
Thank you so much for your help and guidance!

Small obstacles. Minor frictions. They aren't boulders, but they can still trip you up if you aren't watching your step. kaže:
He claims it’s just a tiny lymph node, maybe 6 or 7 mm, and says he isn't worried at all. In his mind, it’s been there forever. I told him that’s nonsense—it wasn't there two weeks ago. I can feel that it's actually grown. So, we're stuck in that classic standoff: one version of reality versus another.

Like I’ve mentioned before, lymph nodes in the neck typically measure up to an inch in diameter. A node measuring around 6 or 7 mm isn't cause for alarm, especially since you've already had multiple ultrasounds to confirm things look fine. Having a few small nodes in the neck area is perfectly standard. Plenty of healthy people have palpable lymph nodes that stay under that one-inch mark without any issues. It's also common for small nodes to linger—sometimes permanently—after an infection clears up.

You should only start worrying if you see a lymph node progressively swelling past that 1 to 1.5 cm mark without any clear inflammatory reason to explain it.
Should I be concerned about that lymphocytopenia from my last post?

That lymphocytopenia is purely relative. Since the absolute lymphocyte count is within the normal range, there isn't an actual case of lymphocytopenia here.

The results show slightly elevated non-segmented granulocytes. It’s likely just a lingering trace of an infection clearing out.
I’m spiraling. I can't shake this fear of cancer, specifically lymphoma, because of a lymph node that's been growing for three weeks now. My doctor insists everything looks completely normal on the ultrasound—claims that if there were anything malignant, it would show up right there on the scan—but I just can't find any peace of mind. I need to end this anxiety once and for all and clear every shred of doubt. Can anyone tell me which specific test will give me a 100% guarantee that it isn't lymphoma?

I don't think you have any reason to worry right now. A lymphoma diagnosis usually requires a histopathology report to be certain anyway. Besides, swollen lymph nodes aren't just limited to your neck, armpits, or groin; they exist all over the body. You can't physically examine every single one, so there's no way to account for every node in existence. Obsessing over whether you can be 100% sure you don't have lymphoma is a bit of a fool's errand.

There are plenty of "hidden" pockets within the body where, theoretically, a malignancy could take hold without showing any symptoms until it reaches a later stage. It’s out of our hands. Because of that, you can never say with 100% certainty that someone is completely free of disease at any given moment.

Night sweats aren't a one-size-fits-all symptom. It’s easy to spiral into thinking about lymphoma, but that's a narrow way to look at it. Most often, you're looking at something else entirely—hormonal shifts or psychological stress are much more common culprits. Finding the actual root cause is what matters here.

Regarding the cough—if it’s been lingering this long, I agree. You need to get it checked out.

Greetings. 🙂

Hey...

I've got two questions, and here’s the rundown on my results...
I'm 18, weight's totally normal...
-IgA deficiency... just one more thing to deal with... Diagnosed back when I was a kid, then again five years ago, and now this... happening again in September 2013...
Got diagnosed with EBV mono back in September 2013... though I probably actually caught it in June since I went through two rounds of antibiotics then and felt slightly better...
Checking back on my September labs... ALP was at 103 (range is 67-264)... AST at 64... just great... (ref. 11-38),... ALT at 127... yikes... (ref. 10-33),... GGT at 37... barely even counts... Things are looking up since those results came back in early November... ALP 91 (ref. 67-264), AST 30 (ref. 11-38)... ALT 34... just another number on the page... GGT is sitting at 18 (ref. 10-27)... everything else is in U/L...
Ran an EBV panel back in September... So, turns out my EBV VCA IgG came back positive... great..., Just got my results back... EBV VCA IgG came in slightly positive... EBV IgM is 0.16 and EBV IgG is 1.19, but they didn't even bother to list the units or the reference ranges... typical...
Just checked my CMV panel... both the CMV IgG and CMV IgM came back negative...
The sore throat's back again at the start of December... just what I needed right before the holidays hit... Cephalin... No improvement...
At the end of January, I'm going out on my own dime to get a liver panel done... ALP 82... AST 44... barely makes the cut... (ref. 11-38),... ALT 64... barely even a blip on the radar... GGT came back at 24... slightly over that 10-27 range... just enough to be annoying...
Just some bloodwork... So, EBV VCA IgG came back at 70... definitely feels like my body is fighting something... EIA method, AU/ml... anything 20 or higher is a positive... EBNA IgG came back positive at 30... EIA method... anything 20 or higher is a positive...
All negative on the EBV VCA IgM, EBV EA IgG, CMV IgM, and CMV IgG... nothing there...
Early March: ALP 89 (ref. 67-264), AST 22 (ref. 11-38), ALT 29 (ref. 10-33), GGT 21 (ref. 10-27)...
Serology results coming in late March... Positive EBV VCA IgG at 74... just great... EIA method, AU/ml (positive if >=20)... EBNA IgG came back positive at 41... EIA method, AU/ml... positive if it's 20 or higher...
Everything came back negative on the EBV VCA IgG, EBV panel, and the CMV tests... just more nothing to deal with...
Back in early April, my ALP 82 (ref. 67-264) and AST 30 (ref. 11-38) were looking like this... ALT 45... just another number on the screen... GGT is sitting at 21, just slightly over that 10-27 range... figures...
Got my results from the day before yesterday... ALP 84 (ref. 67-264), AST 26 (ref. 11-38)... ALT 37... just another number on the page... GGT at 18, when the range stops at 27... just another thing on the list...
During that whole stretch, my abdominal ultrasounds came back totally fine. I wasn't even dealing with any major fatigue, just a nagging sore throat...
I'm officially retired from doing anything remotely physical...

My school doctor basically just gave me the shrug. She said she's clueless because my serology isn't showing a new infection, and then she pointed out that my GGT is actually normal when it really should be elevated according to her liver panel... weird, right? She told me to swing by again once the semester wraps up. Anyone here actually know what's going on with this stuff?...

Another thing... my hemoglobin, hematocrit, and MCV are always running high. Every time I get my liver panel done, they run a CBC and a differential too, and it’s always just slightly over the limit... Hemoglobin levels... what a joke... My levels are all over the place... 170 It’s sitting at g/L... when you're looking for that 129-166 range... typical... hematocrit... Got it... 0.521 Kevin Johnson79 (ref.0.390-0.487) a... MCV... Got it... 93.4 My fL is sitting at 76.5 (ref. 76.5-92.1)... I don't smoke, and I've actually been drinking way more water lately just to stay ahead of it. Could this be tied to mono or is it something else entirely...?

Thanks... 🙂

Hello,

To track cortisol rhythm, blood is typically drawn twice—once in the morning and again in the late afternoon, such as at 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. However, this varies by lab (some might prefer 5:00 PM), so there isn't one universal rule. You’ll need to contact your specific lab for their exact protocol. As for the turnaround time, that depends entirely on the facility you use.
