Can someone who actually knows their stuff explain what these numbers
really mean regarding tumor markers?

http://prntscr.com/4a38ua

We’re looking at someone over 80 years old here... honestly, it’s probably easier to list all the things they *don't* have, since so far, no cancer, tumors, or anything like that has been detected.
No diabetes, either.

I apologize if I am asking this in the wrong place, but I was wondering if there is any way to have my blood type and Rh factor determined somewhere other than Petrov in Chicago. I need to complete several pre-op tests—some at my local clinic and some at the hospital—and I am really trying to minimize unnecessary travel and multiple needle sticks, especially since I'm dealing with some issues with my lower back.

I'm trying to stay off Google as much as possible because even without searching, I'm pretty shocked and scared :-D The surgeon who referred me for the biopsy didn't have an opening until October. Should I try to book something sooner? Then again, I've had this lump for quite a while now, so maybe it's already too late? :-(

If you've noticed this change over a long period and it hasn't grown significantly, it’s unlikely to be a sarcoma. Generally speaking, sarcomas are aggressive tumors that grow and spread very rapidly. In this situation, it's far more probable that we're looking at a completely benign growth made of connective tissue. Given your history—specifically the fact that the surgeon didn't seem concerned during the exam (if they were worried, they likely would have recommended immediate removal rather than just a biopsy, and wouldn't have pushed you out to October), combined with the cytology report which noted a mass of connective cells rather than malignancy—I'd say it's most likely a harmless, benign growth.

That said, for your own peace of mind—and because you can never be too careful—I suggest taking your results to a surgeon for an earlier appointment. It doesn't have to be the same doctor. Any competent general surgeon can weigh in on the next steps, so find someone who can see you sooner.

My doctor ordered a Bromergon test, an overnight blockade using 2mg of dexamethasone, and both MRI and PET scans. After I asked about ten times what exactly this means or what she’s actually suspicious of, she still hasn't given me a straight answer. Not even close. 🙂
If all else fails, can someone walk me through what those test results actually look like? I'm talking about the layout, the data, etc.
Thanks.
😁

Because those pituitary hormones came back elevated, your doctor suspected there might be an issue with the pituitary gland itself, which is why you've been referred for further testing.

Regarding how to perform the bromargonski test, there was already some discussion about this in the pituitary gland thread. You should give that a careful read. This is getting ridiculous. postove.

The overnight dexamethasone suppression test works like this: you take the dexamethasone tablets in the evening—say, around 11 PM—and then head in the next morning, usually around 8 AM, to have your blood drawn to check your cortisol levels.

Dealing with a bad lower back makes all that extra walking a real struggle, not to mention avoiding unnecessary needle sticks.

I believe you might be mistaken—Dubrava Hospital houses the American Red Cross, but they also have access to Merkur Hospital and Sister Rosalia Kaslik Medical Center.

Amino acid excretion in the urine is generally elevated. Thanks.

It would be helpful to know the child's age and the specific reason these tests were ordered.

Hey there!

I'm 21. About 3 or 4 weeks ago, I hit a fever of 101.6°F, ended up with swollen submandibular lymph nodes, and dealt with mouth ulcers—which was a first for me! It all lasted about 10 days. During that time, I had blood work done (Hematology, biochemistry, and an Epstein-Barr test since we suspected mono) as well as a urinalysis. I wasn't on any antibiotics or anything else back then; just took some fever reducers, obviously.

Everything looks solid now regarding my hematology and biochemistry results. Turns out I already kicked mono without even realizing it—my IgG antibodies came back positive, but IgM was negative. So, all good.

The urine tests came back normal too, except for... Urobilinogen:

My results: 50 μmol/L (reference range
I was in such a rush that I completely forgot to ask my doctor what she thinks about it. 🙂 Now, I know Urobilinogen shouldn't be showing up in urine, and if it comes back positive, it could be an indicator of liver disease.
However, my serum liver enzyme levels came back normal:

AST: 19 U/L (ref. interval 8-30)
ALT: 16 U/L (ref. interval 10-36)
GGT: 17 U/L (ref interval 9-35)

I'm wondering what could actually be causing such high levels of Urobilinogen in my urine. 😕

Thanks! 🙂

Hello there!

I am 21 years old, and I have been living with Ulcerative colitis for about five years now. Fortunately, I have been in remission for the last seven or eight months, so everything has felt quite normal lately. About a week ago, I went in for my routine blood work, and while the doctors initially told me everything looked fine, I’ve been staring at these results and feeling a little uneasy about a few specific numbers. Even though they weren't too concerned, I can't help but feel a bit anxious, so I was wondering if anyone might be kind enough to walk me through these values (I'll just list the ones that were flagged, as everything else seems to be within range):

Hematology Lab Results

(vK) Hemoglobin 136 (138-175)
(vK) Hematocrit 0.398 (0.415-0.530)
(vK) MCH
Eosinophils 7.2 (0-7)
Segmented 37.2 (44-72)
Monocytes 12.6 (2-12)

Urinalysis (all findings)

Urine
Appearance clear
Color light yellow
Reaction pH 5 (4.5-7.5)
Specific Gravity 1.030 (1.010-1.030)
Glucose normal
Urobilinogen normal

Sediment

Leukocytes 1-3
Epithelial Cells 1
Mucus 2
Bacteria 2

I am particularly curious about that last section; since my bowel movements are firm and normal and my urine looks clear, shouldn't there be no sign of mucus or bacteria present? I hope I managed to transcribe this clearly enough.

Thanks!

I’ve been living with tetraplegia since my early thirties.
Back at the start of July, I picked up a *Pseudomonas aeruginosa* infection. It hit me with high fevers, heavy sweating, general weakness, and chills. For the last decade or so, I’ve mostly been dealing with *E. coli*, which I try to keep in check, even though I deal with frequent urinary tract infections. Because of the *Pseudomonas*, I was put on Ciprinol and Novocef. While waiting for my results, I was hospitalized in the Urology department and given Garamicin. Once the urine culture came back, the *Pseudomonas* had cleared, but an Enterococcus popped up instead. They tried Vancomycin, but because of an allergy, they switched it to Zyvoxid 600 twice a day. I took that for ten days, but it didn't seem to do much. Then, on August 14th, my urine culture showed both *Pseudomonas* and *E. coli* again. I started Ciprinol then, and I’ve been on it for 13 days now—I'm supposed to continue until Monday. On Friday the 22nd, I did another culture, but nothing changed; it's the same old story with *Pseudomonas* and *E. coli*. In fact, the *Pseudomonas* count actually jumped from 10^4 to 10^5 compared to the last test. I’m starting to wonder if there’s any point in continuing the Ciprinol if it isn't working. Can I be prescribed a heavy-duty reserve antibiotic via IV just to wipe this thing out once and for all? I should mention that compared to early July/early August, I am feeling a bit better; the fever is gone, though I still don't feel great. I’m still getting occasional chills, sweating, general weakness, and insomnia. Honestly, all of this is really tanking my quality of life.
The first one was from 8/8, the lower one is from 8/22.

So, I just got my urinalysis results back. Since my doctor won't be able to see me for my annual checkup until way later, can anyone tell me what's actually going on here? My white blood cell count is elevated.
Urinalysis physical-chemical exam
Leukocytes 75

Fluorescence flow cytometry of urine
Leukocytes 5

Everything else looks fine to me, I guess.
Appearance is clear
Color is light yellow
A little bit of mucus
Some bacteria present

Maria Fisher46 said:Ma'am,

All these results are standard. We ran tests for antibodies that can cross the placenta and destroy fetal red blood cells; your result was negative, which is exactly what we want to see. You were also tested for Hepatitis B, and that came back normal. As for your blood type and Rh factor, you already know those.

You should have received the results by now. If they are negative, your medical leave ends and you can return to work. However, if any sample comes back positive—meaning two consecutive samples aren't negative—you’ll have to repeat the testing and won't be cleared for work until the results are negative.

The core logic behind this screening is that certain HLA antigens appear more frequently in people with specific diseases than in healthy populations. Essentially, having these antigens is linked to a higher risk of developing certain conditions. That doesn't mean anyone with the antigen will definitely get sick. Likewise, someone without it could still fall ill.

The standout here is HLA-B27, which can indicate an increased risk for reactive arthritis (about 40 times higher than someone without it), uveitis (about 10 times higher), ankylosing spondylitis (as much as 80 times higher), and so on.

Stupid question... but I'm genuinely unsure here.🤷

Does HLA-B27 ND mean I definitely have HLA-B27, or does "ND" mean it's not determined (not certain if I have it or don't have it at all)?

I'm asking because three different doctors have misinterpreted this for me... thanks.

Hi, I have a quick question. I just went in for my routine Abdominal Ultrasound to check on a liver hemangioma. Everything looks fine there—the size hasn't changed, which is good—but for the first time, they noted that my spleen is enlarged. My doctor mentioned it might just be due to my build, since I'm a larger woman.
I think he's right, though when he asked about my blood work, I told him everything was fine and completely forgot to mention my anemia.
Here are my blood test results from today:
Iron: 4 (Ref: 8-12)
MCV: 76.40 (Ref: 83-97.20)
MCH: 23.20 (Ref: 27.40-33.90)
MCHC: 303 (Ref: 320-355)

I'm wondering if this could also be a reason for the enlarged spleen, given that I've dealt with anemia for years. Also, can someone's physical build really affect things like spleen size?
For reference, the spleen measures 148x52 mm.
Thanks.

Thanks in advance! 🙂

To whom it may concern,

Just redo the urinalysis. If everything comes back normal, there’s really no reason to worry. A Urobilinogen test can easily trigger a false positive—it could just be a reading error since you're basically judging the color of a strip. It happens.

Greetings. 🙂
Steven Lopez77 said:I'm curious about this last part. If my stool consistency is normal and my urine looks fine, I assume there shouldn't be any issues with service or bacteria? Hopefully, I've phrased that correctly.

Thanks!

Any issues with urination? Did you clean the genital area before providing the sample? And did you make sure to catch the midstream urine?

Asking because three different doctors have misinterpreted this result... thanks.

I believe you have HLA-B27.

As you can see, each HLA marker has two slots, resulting in two numbers. You have "one" HLA-B which is 27, while the "other" HLA-B is undefined. One comes from your father, the other from your mother.

If they couldn't define which HLA-B you had, it should have been listed as HLA-B27.

How did they interpret it, and were they specialists? In what field?

Maria Fisher46 said:I'm thinking you've got HLA-B27.

Look, it's pretty simple—each HLA marker comes in pairs, which is why you see two numbers. You've got one HLA-B that's clearly 27, but the "other" one is just undefined. You get one from your old man and one from your mom.

If they hadn't identified both parts of your HLA-B, the report would've just said HLA-B27.

So, how did they actually read this thing? And who are we talking about here—are these actual specialists? What's their field?

What was the whole point of even running this test in the first place?

I've been peeing way more often lately, and the urine smells gross, plus there's a lot of mucus. Everything seems fine on the OBGYN side, so my doctor told me I should probably get my urine checked out again.

It would be wise to perform a urine culture with an antibiogram. Those symptoms can definitely point toward a urinary tract infection.

Hello,

In your situation, we're likely looking at a complicated urinary tract infection. Since previous treatment attempts haven't yielded results, an interdisciplinary approach would be best—essentially, having a urologist and an infectious disease specialist work together.

Dz1, I've moved your inquiry to the Heart and Lung X-ray thread.

Hey there,

Look, in your situation, we're talking about a complicated urinary tract infection. Since your previous attempts at fixing this haven't actually worked, you really need an interdisciplinary approach—basically, you need a urologist and an infectious disease specialist working together on this.

I'm honestly terrified this is gonna migrate to my kidneys. This thing has been dragging on way too long without getting properly handled.

We’ve been trying to conceive for about 2 years now...
During my checkups, they diagnosed me with PCOS; I've always had long cycles ranging from 35 to 60 days. My gynecologist gave me a referral to test my reproductive hormones and prescribed Utrogestan (3x1) from day 14 to 25 to help regulate things. So far, the regulation seems to be working, and my cycle has settled at about 30 days.
I had my hormone levels drawn on day 3 of my cycle, and then checked my progesterone on day 21.

FSH 4.40 follicular phase: 1.8-9.4 IU/L
LH 3.10 follicular phase: 0.8-10.4 IU/L
PROLACTIN 366.00 81-597 mlU/L
DHEA-SO4 6.80 1.8-9.8 umol/L
ANDROSTENDIONE 9.80 1.7-16.4 nmol/L
TESTOSTERONE 2.90 0.4-2.74 nmol/L
SHBG 51.00 20-85 nmol/L
TSH 6.82 0.3-3.6 mlU/L
T4 92.80 58-161 nmol/L
T3 2.50 1.3-3.6 nmol/L
PROGESTERONE 54.70 follicular phase: 2.2-5.7 nmol/L

My gynecologist’s take on the results was that everything looks fine, except for the elevated TSH, so she referred me to a thyroid specialist. I saw a nuclear medicine specialist who diagnosed me with mild hypothyroidism and started me on Euthyrox 25 mcg. After two months on the medication, my TSH is down to 3.17... though I'm still waiting on the official feedback, and I suspect they might bump up my dosage since the TSH is technically still high. I've also been prescribed Clomiphene, which I've taken for the last three cycles (2x1 from day 3 to 7). If this third cycle doesn't result in conception, they recommended I get an HSG.
So, if anyone could help me make sense of these numbers—specifically whether the other hormones are actually okay aside from the TSH, as my doctor suggested—I would be incredibly grateful.

P.S.: Sorry for the long post :-)

I'm 22, and my Bilirubin has been high for a few months now and isn't budging. I went to see a doctor, and if the normal range is roughly between 5 and 30, mine is sitting at 40 or 45. The doc says it’s nothing to panic about, but he sent me for a battery of tests just to be safe. I’ve already done testing for HIV and Hepatitis, plus jaundice panels, and everything came back clear—I don't have those kinds of diseases. My Abdominal Ultrasound was also totally fine. Now I'm left with this Coombs test, which I have absolutely no clue what it means. Can anyone explain that to me? Also, one more thing: it really bugs me that my eyes are yellow. From what I gathered from the doctor, it's because my metabolism is sluggish. There was a period where they were yellow, then it cleared up, and now it's back. The doctor thinks it's most likely Gilbert syndrome, but this yellowing is driving me crazy. Any advice on how to get rid of the yellow tint? Thanks
