If you know it's already there, then have the decency to drop a link to it... 🤷

Fine, you make a fair point. I can't argue with that logic. 🙂

No idea. I didn't design it.
It works fine for the basics, but if you're looking for anything specific, it’s a massive headache. Honestly, sometimes it's just easier to find things manually... 🤷

ambermason16 said:Alright, fair point. I have to hand it to you, your argument actually holds water. 🙂

I'm with you there, too. But honestly, if a topic is already being discussed right there on the first page, what's the point of dropping a link? It feels redundant.

Anyway, the search tool works just fine, so there’s really no reason not to use it.

As for the other feedback, like I mentioned before, I've taken it all in. Hopefully, the PDF functionality will run a bit smoother moving forward.

And just to be clear, we aren't doing a chat topic—we all reached a consensus on that.

I was rushing earlier, so I didn't get a chance to finish my thought from the last post. Look, unless someone is systematically spamming the exact same topic over and over, the mods usually go the extra mile to link everything and post notifications. But sometimes, after seeing the same thing 5,000 times, we just run out of steam. 🙂 And in those instances, the users themselves usually jump in with comments like, "Dude, this thread has been posted a hundred times already, check here and there."

Disclaimer: I’m not pointing fingers at anything brightpuma started—I don't have a specific example in mind and it was a while ago. I’m speaking generally based on experience. That said, I realize there are exceptions to the rule where a moderator (and I’ll be the first to admit it, before you even mention Henry Moore2) could definitely step it up a bit more.

Regarding the subject of the diaspora, here is my take from someone living abroad. As some have pointed out, we consider this PDF our virtual gathering place; its primary purpose is social interaction, unwinding, chatting, comparing prices, lifestyles, and helping those who intend to join the emigration. However, we do not view this PDF exclusively as an information desk for immigration advice, and I believe I speak for the majority when I say that every hair on my body stands up when I read something like: "I am an engineer in [profession], I have [x] years of experience, what are my chances of getting a visa for [country]?" What kind of odds are you expecting? In percentages? We aren't psychics, Milan. Does anyone realize how foolish they sound when they write that? Many times I wanted to respond—though I know I'd just get banned for it—that there is only one possible answer to such a question: zero! Every single chat thread has been ruined precisely because people troll the topic by asking for immigration advice or seeking tips. I have much more to say, but I am exhausted; my work schedule runs from dawn till dusk, but that is just life in Australia 😬 please do not fault me for my honesty

So, that’s really the gist of it. I find myself closing out at least one thread every single day just like this—basically asking, "Hey, what are my actual odds of pulling this off?"
If anyone has a better way of looking at things or some smarter advice, I'm all ears.

Hey diaspora, I was thinking... would it be better if we had dedicated info threads that were strictly just links to websites, blogs, and those super helpful posts, while keeping all the actual chatting and debating in the usual country-specific subforums like we have now? That way, all the essential info for newcomers stays in one organized spot, making it easy to find everything without having to wade through the same million questions about visas and job hunting over and over again...

That way, information for newcomers would be in one clear place, without a million repetitive questions about visas and job hunting.

The issue is that those threads either exist or used to exist, but as both Wog Boy and Henry Moore2 pointed out, people either simply don't want to do a little digging or they just don't know how. Both scenarios are infuriating, and I feel especially for the regulars who constantly staff these threads.

Back when I was a moderator for the diaspora countless times (I mean literally dozens, if not more), I spent my time pleading, shouting, linking, and begging people not to repeat the same exact questions—to actually read the threads because everything has already been answered ten times over. We tried to stop people from treating the forums like a 24/7 help desk for every tiny triviality. We set up threads specifically for technical support, urged people to send a private message instead, and asked the "old pros" 😉, like Wog Boy, to jump into certain threads to provide advice and answers. None of it really worked.

People just take the path of least resistance, and that leads to a revolt from both the forum users and the mods. Honestly, if things hadn't gotten so out of hand, both sides would have gladly helped, and they certainly did try.

Unfortunately, in any toxic situation like this, someone who hasn't earned it sometimes ends up getting screwed over. But in my experience, if that happens, the mistake is corrected very quickly once it's pointed out to the moderators.

I believe it is high time all moderators accept the reality that the search function is completely useless and serves almost no purpose at all. 😬
It is actually easier to find what I need on Google than to use this forum's own internal search tool. 🤣

I can find what I need on Google faster than I can through this forum's own search tool. 🤣

Even searching by thread titles isn't terrible, but trying to find a specific term within a topic? It's a complete disaster.

I’ve been mulling over the idea of putting together a massive master thread—something that acts like a one-stop shop for general info on most countries. I figure if we had a central hub, it would make life way easier for the new folks joining us, and honestly, it might save the regulars from getting bombarded with the exact same questions every couple of weeks. It feels a bit like having a giant FAQ manual sitting on a coffee table instead of everyone shouting the same thing over and over.
Does anyone have any good ideas on how to structure this?

Listen, you need to appoint a few more moderators equipped with basic tools—specifically the eraser. Anything that doesn't belong in a specific thread should be tossed straight into the trash. Take the "Australia Work and Life" thread, for instance: any question regarding how to emigrate needs to be deleted immediately, as does anything concerning visas. There is already a dedicated thread for that: Emigration to Australia. Eventually, people will hopefully develop enough common sense to understand how to phrase their inquiries. Anyone incapable of discerning which topic applies to their specific issue is simply proving their own incompetence, and such content deserves to be purged. This rule should also apply to those notoriously idiotic questions like "what are my chances?" and things of that nature.

The problem is solved; just add two or three more mods and let the deletions begin. The useful information has been buried under a mountain of moronic questions anyway.

P.S. A small note before anyone reacts too aggressively: I haven't mentioned banning anyone once. I am strictly talking about deletion—cleaning up threads by removing the junk and the spam.

Anyone got any ideas?

If there’s really this much interest in people leaving the US, Canada, or Mexico... then it’s probably best to just launch a dedicated sub-forum called Emigrating to Other Countries, or maybe just Emigration, but the key is making sure it’s pinned right on the main page of so it catches the eye immediately, similar to how they handled the Homeland War or Agriculture sections.

Eventually, people will hopefully get their act together and learn how to phrase things correctly. Honestly, if someone can't figure out which topic applies to their specific issue, they're proving they aren't paying attention and deserve to have their posts wiped. Same goes for those notoriously mindless questions like "what are my chances?" and stuff like that.

Problem solved. Just add two or three more mods and let the deleting begin. All the actually useful info has been buried under a mountain of stupid questions anyway.

PS, just a quick heads-up before anyone gets defensive: I didn't say anything about banning anyone, just deleting posts. It's just about cleaning up the threads from junk and spam.

We've tried that approach, but it barely helps. There's always a fresh batch of new users who simply refuse to read the rules or the guides...
I was thinking more along the lines of having a dedicated thread that just holds all the essential links and phone numbers.
I'll make sure to keep a much closer eye on the posts you mentioned.

I'd definitely vote for a separate section, but honestly, I'd need some help from the rest of you users to make it work.
Like, imagine if we started a thread specifically for moving to Denmark. It would just be filled with practical stuff—how to apply, who handles the paperwork, all that good info...

Anyone got ideas?

For instance, looking at how the Facebook group for Working holiday in Canada is set up could be a good move. They have a massive amount of links covering pretty much everything. 🤷

If someone pops into one of those threads where everyone is hanging out and asks a question, they just get deleted immediately. No discussion.

If you take a look at the homepage... It’s pretty obvious that Economics has four PDFs lined up and History has two, yet the Diaspora section doesn't have a single one to show for it. When we start rolling these files out, we really need to stay flexible; my thought is to launch them and see how they perform, then just decide whether to keep them live or scrap them based on whether anyone actually bothers to click on them.

brightpuma said:Honestly, this is just ridiculous.

I spend most of my time on diaspora forums too, and the moderation here seems insane. Deleting everything in sight, shutting down every other thread, banning people just because they're arguing (on a forum like 🤣🤣)... I mean, good grief. Apparently, it’s some kind of rule now, people voted against having chat threads, questions are getting on everyone's nerves when there's a chance they might actually be useful. A thread titled after a specific country could cover anything from studying there and flight info to marriage. It’s all pretty comical to me... then again, if someone needs a site like this to navigate massive life decisions like emigrating to another country, they probably don't need much better service than this anyway.
And that thread about the young engineer and the idiots staying in America? That had way too much potential to turn into a playground where frustrated, unemployed retail workers and English teachers argue with frustrated engineers in Dubai about what a decent standard of living looks like... where one group would sell their soul for a Western residency permit, and the other would whine that anything under a hundred thousand dollars a year is "good enough" for immigrants.

We already have a thread dedicated to engineers, so there’s really no need for a new one.

People actually told me themselves how much it bugs them when we ask about their chances—it’s like, even when we’re trying to step up and help, we’re still the bad guys.

The banning in Australia happened because certain individuals kept breaking the rules after being warned a few times, and that was all decided alongside the admin and the mod team.
It’s impossible to please every single person in the diaspora.

Regarding the general discussion topics, I’ll be working on those over the next few weeks, but just a heads-up: we aren't going to allow duplicate threads, so please just stick to the ones that are already here.
There won't be a separate chat thread, and there's honestly no reason to go looking for one.
