Moderator on the Diaspora forum

Look, I can barely stomach reading other forums as it is, so I have no idea if this is actually standard practice here, though that doesn't make it any less insane.
Shouldn't moderation primarily focus on stopping insults, spam, or anything borderline illegal? I mean, with all due respect, only a tiny fraction of users seem to view this as some weird subculture where the first thing you're supposed to do is study the rulebook and learn the laws of your new little community 🤣. Sure, people act stupid sometimes, but if someone doesn't want to deal with it, they don't have to comment.
And what does "this won't be a chat thread" even mean? That tone is ridiculous. It won't happen, there's no point complaining... is this a forum or a Supreme Court hearing? Who decided this and when? Newcomers don't get a vote on these things. Are we holding periodic elections or sessions or something? 🤣🤣
And this idea about "helping people" by not bothering them with "stupid questions"... what? Are the people who get annoyed by these questions somehow more prestigious than the ones asking them?

Sorry, it's just funny. If this were a Justin Bieber fan club, maybe it would make sense for teenagers to fight over what's allowed, but seeing grown, educated adults wasting time on this nonsense... I don't know whether to laugh or feel bad. Calling this totally normal is just weird. 🤷

Honestly, it’s because we have grown adults running things that we ended up without any decent chat topics and stuck with this whole diaspora treatment situation... I mean, you can't just say "if you don't want to read the rules, don't read them" when people keep posting the exact same stuff over and over again, driving everyone else crazy and totally nuking the threads... it's a mess that won't fix itself just by ignoring the problem.

If things need to change, then they really do... I'm all for hearing some actual suggestions on how to make it better.

At the end of the day, we made sure everyone knows there's an issue, and the mod showed she's actually willing to act on it. That’s enough for me.

As for suggestions, maybe just shoot him a DM. As far as I know, he runs the Facebook group for White House visas, so he might know the best way to migrate some info over to the forum.
That's one thing we could actually do regarding Canada. Since Canada is so popular and the White House program is such a big topic, having a sticky thread with some useful links would be a huge help.

Finding those links and pinning the thread is honestly the easiest part of this whole thing, barely even worth mentioning 🙂
