What did you (intentionally) miss?

Sacha Baron Cohen and this new flick of his (I can't even remember the title...) compared to those uber-cool teen movies filled with music and dancing where everyone is just innocent and wonderful, or those trendy teen flicks centered on Black culture and their supposedly amazing lives, or all the Fast & Furious movies and stuff like that—like Torque, which was total trash—or Vin Diesel's XXX, or those cheesy romances...

I have to admit, I’ve seen every single Twilight Saga movie except this new one (I haven't even touched the first part of the last installment) because I wanted to see what the hype was about and why kids are so obsessed... and I was wrong. Especially after reading the books to see if they were actually as bad as I thought. Believe it or not, the books are at least 90% less terrible than the movies.

Besides, there is no way in hell I could sit through garbage like Sex and the City, Step Up, or The Devil Wears Prada... omfg, I skip those the second they pop up while I'm watching TV or surfing the web.

Harry Potter, and I mean 😁 intentionally. I actually caught the first movie back when theaters were still a big thing around here.

Mrs. Smith. I tend to skip pretty much anything featuring Angelina Jolie—it’s just not my thing—but I made an exception for Alexander the Great. I have a soft spot for history, though, and looking back, that decision definitely came back to haunt me.

I’ve decided to pass on watching Avatar.

After a while, I ended up turning off The Departed, The Girl Who Played with Fire, Dogville, Sherlock Holmes, and The Grey... They might actually be good films, but they just didn't resonate with me at that moment, and I simply can't bring myself to force them.

The Fast & Furious series, the Twilight Saga, all those Narnia and Golden Compass movies, every rom-com out there, The Hangover 2, and anything starring Adam Sandler.🙂+ basically half of whatever else was just mentioned.

If you want to try The Girl Who Played with Fire, maybe check out the Swedish trilogy instead!

I've heard so many people raving about Dogville lately, but I just haven't been able to bring myself to sit down and watch it—honestly, it looks pretty damn long...

I sat through the first twenty minutes of that flick before I finally called it. Total snooze fest. ☕

The last thing I actually turned off halfway through was Summertime. I guess the way Katharine Hepburn played her character just really got under my skin. It felt like she was overacting, which made the whole role pretty annoying... maybe it was right around the middle when they got back from their date, but I don't want to give too many spoilers.

Before that, a few years ago, I stopped watching Starter for 10 almost immediately, but I suppose it might be time to give it another shot.

Looking back at all those massive blockbusters everyone seems to obsess over, there’s a whole list of movies I’ve avoided, and honestly, I haven't even felt the urge to check them out. I'm talking about things like Avatar, the Twilight Saga, 2012, and Titanic—though I did catch maybe the first third of that one. Most of those big-budget Hollywood spectacles just don't do anything for me. It might sound a bit strange, but I kind of make a point of staying away from them; I just can't get into that whole scene of high-priced productions filled with flashy special effects and slippery, shallow stories. I suppose a lot of people probably stay away for the same reason, just to maintain a bit of mental hygiene, if that makes sense. Even when I do hear about one, I tend to forget it almost instantly, mostly because I just don't view them as meaningful cultural artifacts. That isn't to say that every single one of these movies is actually bad. For instance, I could see myself potentially enjoying Avatar if I actually sat down to watch it, but the motivation just isn't there. Then there's Inception, which I've been putting off for ages now. The fact that it clocks in at around two and a half hours feels pretty daunting, especially since I was so underwhelmed by Shutter Island after I finally watched it.

To be honest, I haven’t actually sat down to watch any of the Harry Potter movies, except for the second one—you know, the one with all those giant spiders and the flying car. 🤣So, I ended up hitting the theater with some friends just for the hell of it—we were all just hanging out, tossing ideas around, and I eventually just shrugged and said, "Why not?" Honestly, the experience was pretty middle-of-the-road; it wasn't exactly terrible, but it didn't blow my mind either. I don't really get lost in the whole Harry Potter hype, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it’s bad or even exceptionally good. It definitely has its dedicated fanbase, and it's probably a well-made enough production, which arguably makes it better than something like Iron Man. I actually skipped the first one, but a friend finally talked me into seeing it, and honestly, it was one of the worst movies I've ever sat through—especially considering how much everyone seems to obsess over it.

I’d say go for it! I honestly think you should give it a shot. It might not be for everyone—definitely isn't a "feel-good" movie by any means—but what’s truly fascinating is how the director pulls you right into his little psychological game. He does this incredible job of drawing you in so deep that you find yourself getting genuinely emotionally invested halfway through. To me, that's pure craftsmanship, real art. Personally, I actually found his follow-up, Manderlay, to be even more impactful, and I’d definitely put Dogville in my top 20 favorite films of all time. So, if you do watch it, maybe check out Manderlay afterward too. Of course, movies like this are subjective; they hit everyone differently, and there aren't really any set rules for how you're supposed to feel about them...

Harry Potter, Narnia, those Swedish or American girl movies, every Pirates of the Caribbean flick except the first one, the Twilight Saga... plus one of those late Van Damme movies. That's about 20 films, but I'll make up for it eventually, believe me!

Movies like Transformers, X-Men, and that whole genre... honestly, they make absolutely zero sense to me.
Then you’ve got James Bond—though I think I only actually sat through the first one—and the rest of the series is just more of the same. It’s all just cookie-cutter stuff, right? Nothing intriguing about it at all.
And don't even get me started on those high-octane action flicks that are supposed to get your adrenaline pumping. They don't work on me, and there's zero substance to pull anything meaningful from them.
Sci-fi is pretty much the same story... the only thing worth watching is The X-Files and maybe a couple of others, but I steer clear of Star Wars and Star Trek like the plague.
Then there are those mindless comedies popping up everywhere these days—well, except for The Hangover and Borat, which were actually legendary😁—and those teen movies, which are usually just way too hyperactive for my taste.
