My laptop battery capacity has tanked to about 30%... I’m getting maybe 50 minutes of runtime at most. I was having some issues with my charger—it kept cutting in and out—and ever since then, the battery just stopped performing. I’ve since picked up a new charger, but the battery life remains abysmal. Now I’m wondering if there is any way to fix this (though I doubt it, given you can't really restore lost capacity), or if I could buy just the individual galvanic cells inside rather than the entire unit. I opened it up and found six cells; I figured replacing those might be a much cheaper route. Best regards.

You didn't even mention how old the battery is... check out the stickied thread on batteries and try calibrating it first. But if what you're saying is true, it's probably just dead. As far as parts go, besides eBay, I know Micro Center used to have some decent selection, so maybe check there...

Thanks... I should have mentioned the age of the machine first. It’s about two years old now... though, if I had my way, it should still be holding up just fine

It all depends on how old the actual battery cell is (its manufacture date). They have a shelf life regardless of how much you actually use them. Everything you need to know is laid out in the main battery thread 😁

Hey everyone—looking for some advice on swapping out the battery for my Dell Inspiron 15 Z. The machine is about six years old now, but it still gets the job done for basic web browsing, and honestly, the battery has lasted surprisingly well up to this point. Right now, I’m getting maybe 30 minutes 👍 before it dies, so it’s definitely time for a change. Also, I was wondering if I really need to hunt down an OEM part, or if a generic third-party battery will do the trick?

Thanks

A decent replacement will do the job, sure. Just watch who you're buying from (do a quick Google search to make sure the company isn't sketchy or getting trashed in reviews 😬) and don't get anything too old—definitely nothing more than two years out of production.

They go for about 10 bucks on eBay, though shipping takes forever (anywhere from 15 to 30 days), so stick to sellers with solid feedback. Around here, they run anywhere from 300 to $133 (just plug it into Google), but there are a few places where you can pick one up...
