Hey guys. So I was scrolling through eBay looking at webcams earlier and stumbled onto something that seems totally sketchy.
I'm seeing these "20.0MP" webcams listed for like five or ten bucks. What's the catch here?
I’ve been digging through the specs, and every single one of them claims
they're hitting 20 megapixels, or they list an image resolution of 5120 * 3840.
There's also something else bugging me.
I read somewhere that Microsoft Windows just defaults everything to 640 x 480.
How am I supposed to actually get any decent quality out of a webcam? I've got an old Logitech webcam, and whenever I try to snap a photo, it's stuck at 640 * 480, even though it's supposed to be able to do over 1280 * 960.
Cheers, thanks.

1. You're gonna need specific software to make that happen..
2. And if you're actually taking photos, for heaven's sake, just buy a real camera. Even a basic digital one from Best Buy for like $110 is ten times better than a phone or—God forbid—a webcam..
3. I mean, the whole point of a webcam is for video calls, right? What's the use of having some crazy high megapixel count on a webcam if your upload speed is a pathetic 50kbps?

so
1. What kind of software do you guys recommend for webcams?
2. As far as photography goes, I’ve got a Nikon 10.1 MP with a 10x zoom, but honestly, I don't have any use for it right now. (I'm actually thinking about some surveillance on my neighbor. Her window is up high, and there's this branch near the window where I could mount the camera, run a cable to a safe spot, plug it into my laptop, and just sit back and enjoy the show.) 🙂
Basically, I'm not looking for anything for video calls. Even the webcam I'm using now is pretty useless since it's only 1.3 mp.
peace and thanks.

1. Just use your actual webcam (like a decent Logitech one) and make sure the drivers are actually installed correctly.
2. I’m not even going to go there.🙂
3. Good luck finding some random guy online who isn't lying about pixel counts and all that junk... 👍

Honestly? Just save yourself the headache and spend the cash on something from this list instead.
