The Other Guys (2010)

Adam McKay and Will Ferrell are teaming up again!! This director/writer/actor duo has already crushed it with hits like "Anchorman : The Legend of Ron Burgundy", "Talladega Nights : The Ballad of Ricky Bobby", "The procedure", and "step Brothers". Now, they’re hitting theaters everywhere with a new action comedy called "The Other Guys". Honestly, it feels like a massive parody of those classic buddy cop flicks like "Lethal Weapon" or "bad boys"—basically the American take on "hot Fuzz".
Adam McKay is handling the directing and writing duties here, while Will Ferrell takes on a lead role. He's backed by a seriously stacked cast including Mark Wahlberg, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Eva Mendes, Ray Stevenson, Anne Heche, Steve Coogan, and even Paris Hilton—which, okay, maybe isn't exactly "heavyweight acting," but she's on the list nonetheless.
The US release is set for August 2, 2010, and it should be hitting all our local theaters by the end of the year.

PLOT

New York City's Detectives Christopher Danson and P. K. Highsmith (Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson) are the toughest, most popular cops in New York City. They don't even need tattoos—other guys get tattoos of them instead. Just a few desks away, you've got Detectives Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg). You've seen them in the background of photos of Danson and Highsmith, out of focus and eyes closed. They aren't the heroes; they're just "The Other Guys." But everyone gets a shot at greatness eventually, and before long, Gamble and Hoitz trip into a case that looks minor but turns out to be New York City's biggest crime. It's the big break they've been waiting for, but do these guys actually have what it takes?

I caught this at the theater recently—and honestly, once the credits started rolling, I realized my initial assumption was way off. I went in expecting just another typical American action flick with some cheap, forced jokes, but man, was I surprised by how genuinely great this movie actually turned out to be.🙏
I was absolutely dying! Seriously, people in the audience were practically weeping from laughing so hard.

I didn't have particularly high expectations going into this—honestly, I didn't—but it turned out to be significantly better than Cop Out. Then again, that isn't exactly a high bar to clear, considering Cop Out was an absolute disaster from start to finish. To be blunt, most of the films where Will Ferrell takes the lead role just don't land for me; even that stand-up special where he plays Bush felt incredibly tedious. It’s hard to explain, but he just doesn't seem able to carry an entire feature film on his own. He's at his best when he's playing supporting roles or doing sketches—that's where the magic happens. In my opinion, The Other Guys is his finest work—though, I suppose I still haven't sat down to watch Step Brothers yet.

Unexpected twists—Ferrell playing a pimp, that dinner scene with Eva Mendes and Mark Wahlberg, the sudden deaths of S.L.J. and Rock right at the start, plus a ton of one-liners. Ferrell is a legend. 😁

...this brand new action comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Ferrell...

Mark Wahlberg is honestly one of my favorite action stars lately—he’s got such a great knack for making supporting roles shine, too.

Which is exactly why I can't wrap my head around why he decided to jump into such a shallow, mindless comedy.

The whole movie feels like the actors are practically begging you to laugh, but it just isn't funny; the comedic timing is forced, the situations feel way too over-the-top, and the dialogue—which is supposed to be the punchline—is just plain dull. Ferrell is just... well, he's Ferrell. In my experience, he was underwhelming in Semi-Pro, hit a wall in Blades of Glory, and was pretty rough in Talladega Nights, though I suppose that's fair since the entire movie is just nonsense to begin with.

And honestly, this might actually be his weakest performance yet, which is saying something given how bad he is here.🙄

Bottom line? Only bother watching this if every other cinema in the country burns down and every DVD on Earth is destroyed—except for this one.

Man, what a snooze fest.

Look, I’m the type of person who likes to give everyone a fair shot. I've been let down by plenty of actors before, but they’ve gone on to make great stuff later, so I try not to write off a movie until I've actually sat through it.

I honestly don't know, I just can't get into Will Ferrell. I've sat through a few of his "classics" that everyone seems to rave about, and to me, they were just mindless, nonsensical, and honestly not even funny. Now, I've heard a lot of buzz about this specific movie, and people are actually praising it, but my take hasn't changed one bit. The plot makes zero sense; it’s just one ridiculous scene after another, over and over again. It’s like that one person mentioned earlier who was begging the actress to laugh when she clearly wasn't feeling it—it’s just tedious.

I guess it's just not my brand of humor, plain and simple.

There are so many brilliant scenes, sharp dialogues, and genuinely hilarious moments... honestly, I can't remember the last time a comedy actually made me laugh this much in the past year.

Since this is an American production—and honestly, a fantastic comedy at that—let me just say:

7/10 - Definitely worth a watch if you're looking to kill an afternoon.
