I'm looking at getting a laser printer, and a buddy is offering me one from his office. It's already clocked about 40,000 pages for $83... Do these machines actually have a lifespan, or is there some hard limit on how many pages they can churn out before dying?

Should I take him up on it, or pass... ?

Does it actually have toner in it right now? If it's full, go for it! But if it's empty, be careful... just replacing the toner might cost you as much as buying a brand new printer.

By the way, if you're interested, I could sell you my Brother HL-L2300D for $67. It's only printed... maybe 500-600 pages total. The toner is low, though, and it's about a year old.

Look, nobody can actually give you a definitive lifespan for a printer because who knows when some plastic gear or a roller is just going to snap? 😁 His monthly volume is around 10k pages, so that shouldn't be a huge deal. But keep this in mind: the photoconductor kit—you know, the drum, corona wires, fusers—is rated for about 30k prints. They usually last longer than that, so there's a chance they haven't even swapped them out at the office yet since that maintenance probably happens less often than getting a new laser printer... just don't screw this up. And
Richard Fox7 made a good point regarding the toner...2>>

I’d just grab a new one. $67 Considering my old unit clocked in at 40,000 pages, or $233 if I'm looking at a brand-new model, it's a no-brainer. 40k pages is a lot—that thing is basically held together by prayers at this point. Most printers usually tap out around the 30,000 mark anyway.
