Best software for making slideshow videos?

Greetings.
I have some photos from a recent birthday celebration and I am looking to compile them into a video.
Nothing overly complex is required—just a standard .avi format would suffice. Does anyone have recommendations for a lightweight, straightforward program?

If I'm just putting together a slideshow from photos and nothing too crazy, should I just use iMovie? 😛
