Best software for burning video to DVD?

Could you maybe walk me through exactly what you're trying to pull off here? Like, give me some actual details... because if you just want to burn something to a DVD, you can basically use any burning software out there and call it a day.

Are you maybe thinking of some kind of screen recorder, like something used to capture the desktop or whatever?

I have some videos I'd love to burn onto a DVD—but here's the catch—I need them to actually work in a standard DVD player!
Since Windows Media Player isn't quite cutting it for all my files, does anyone know of a better program?

It looks like what you’re really after is a program like ConvertXtoDVD. You just toss everything you want onto the disc, and it handles all the conversion and burning for you, making it ready to go straight into your DVD player.

Question: Can anyone point me toward a legit free program—like, something you actually use—that burns AVI files to DVD without converting them to something else? I need it to burn as data, because my DVD player handles those old DivX discs just fine.
DivX is totally broken (some weird bug makes burning DVDs impossible even on the paid versions), my Microsoft subscription expired (and it wouldn't even touch my AVIs, just original DVDs), and searching online is a nightmare because there's tons of info out there but zero clarity on whether the software actually burns AVI files or not. I don't want some shady trial version either; I need actual freeware or open source that just burns AVIs. Nero isn't free.

maybe give it a
shot
I'm using Microsoft right now and honestly, it does the job. I used to roll with Nero back in the day and it was totally fine, no complaints there.
As for the licensing stuff? Please. That’s easy enough to sort out if you know what you're doing. 😉

That software won't burn discs without converting them first.
Microsoft didn't give me any trouble with my discs, so I don't even want it.

Sophia Anderson35 said:Does anyone have a solid recommendation for a reliable, free program to burn AVI files onto a DVD without having to convert them into some other format first? I’m looking to burn them as data discs, since my DVD player can already handle the ones I previously burned using DIVX.
It feels like DivX is just completely broken lately—there’s some weird bug floating around that makes burning DVDs impossible, even if you’re using one of those paid versions. I also tried using Microsoft, but my trial period expired, and honestly, it was pretty useless anyway since it wouldn't touch my AVI files; it would only burn original DVDs. I've been scouring the internet for answers, but there is just so much noise out there and so little actual information regarding whether these programs can actually handle AVI files or not. At this point, I’m not looking for another trial version that’s going to cut me off halfway through; I really just want something that's either pure freeware or open-source that does one thing and does it well: burns AVIs. Obviously, Nero isn't a free option, so I'm looking for a better way to get this done.
So, if I'm following your train of thought correctly, you're looking to burn a handful of those .avi movies onto a single DVD so you can pop them into a home DVD player that happens to support DivX or something along those lines, right?

Microsoft didn't burn my AVIs for me either, and honestly, I don't want it to.
If you're saying it "won't burn"
all three programs we talked about can handle AVI formats just fine, along with pretty much everything else out there.
So, what are we actually talking about here? A converter? Or a burning program? Just be a bit more specific about what you're looking for.

I mean, if you just want a solid burning tool, maybe grab Windows Media Player since it’s totally free. I use it myself and it gets the job done fine, especially for what you're after—burning AVI files to play on an external player that supports DIVX-XDIV.
If you actually need to convert stuff, like if the movie is an MKV or made with ffdshow, I usually just run it through Format Factory to turn it into MPEG first.

I had a similar experience with Ashampoo where it wouldn't burn my files properly, so I’m honestly not looking to pick up any more of their tools.
Actually, pretty much any program can burn .avi files without needing a conversion; the file format doesn't really dictate whether it burns or not, you just have to make sure you select the option to burn it as a data DVD.
