Hi there! I was wondering if blood donated for pre-op transfusions undergoes testing for things like HIV, hepatitis, and other viruses?
To be honest, when I went to donate at a local hospital and saw just how many people were lining up, it made me wonder if all that blood actually goes through every single screening protocol...
At least here in the States 🙂

🤦

Actually, they simply draw the blood and then stash it away in storage, pulling from the supply whenever the need arises. 🤣

Of course, there are regular checks in place, and if any serious issues are ever suspected, you would certainly receive a notification.

Take me, for example. If I were told I had Hepatitis B 🙄 I would have completely lost my mind. After a thousand different tests, they just come back and tell me it was some minor clerical error, "sorry, honey" 😍 I am officially done donating blood 😁 Sure, it might be the humane thing to do for everyone else, but it’s hardly fair to me to have to endure all that stress and uncertainty all over again 😁

The last time I donated blood was back in 2005 (in Pittsburgh, Canada), and at the time, they mentioned they would be testing for infectious diseases. I was hoping someone who is familiar with the current protocols could clarify what specific tests are run on donated blood in the US today and how long these standards have been in place. Thanks in advance!
