How to edit audio in a video?

So, I used Microsoft Office to transfer this old VHS tape over to my PC. It’s an MPEG file now. The picture looks solid and the audio works, but man, the sound is super quiet and there's just constant background hiss everywhere.

Does anyone know which program I can use to fix the audio on this video? I really need some help here—what software should I grab and how do I actually use it? This is footage from my wedding, so it's a huge deal to me. Seriously, any advice at all would be awesome. My rig is running an Intel Core i7 at 2.0 GHz, with 1GB of RAM and 3GB of virtual memory.

It might be easiest to just strip the audio from the video, run it through some small utility to clean it up, and then mux them back together. Or maybe just use Adobe Premiere.

You can handle that using Adobe Audition. If you want, I can walk you through my process later on.

Handbrake, though you might be able to clean things up using Microsoft Office if you don't already have GarageBand. Both programs are free, I guess.

And once you get it running, just head up to the top. I need to insert this. If that button isn't showing up, just hit F12 to make it appear, then select your option. Converting video from a file.
The video window should pop up, and you'll see the audio running on its own separate track.
Just double-click that audio track and you're good to go. Effects / amplitude / amplify
In the field. amplification Move the first slider to the right as much as you need to boost the volume.
And I said, once you've turned up the volume, go ahead. Effects / Noise Reduction----- How do I handle hiss reduction?
And here are the noise reduction filters.
Once you pick a filter, just hit preview to hear how it sounds.

Honestly, Adobe Audition is a fantastic audio editing tool. There really isn't anything you can't accomplish with it when it comes to sound.

Seriously though, Audacity is an absolute beast for audio work—there’s basically nothing you can't fix with it if you know what you're doing.
