Here is the footage of Friedrich's jump. She was agonizingly close; if she had cleared that, it would have been an absolute nightmare for Blanka to recover. You can see Zeljko Vlašić’s reaction right after Friedrich's attempt—just pure disbelief, muttering "no, no, no"... it was way too close for comfort.

By the way,
Friedrich definitely wasn't performing at her peak level today.

Actually, Friedrich was totally on her game this year. She’s got one jump at 206, but after that, nothing higher than 203. When you look at the top 10 jumps of the season, Blanka has 7 of them while the cop only has 3. So yeah, Blanka has been consistent all year long, whereas this girl basically had one good day and that's about it.

Well, bravo, Blanka Vlašić.

We saw the ceremonial lap featuring the flags of Usain Bolt, Kenenisa Bekele, Caster Semenya, Eliud Kipchoge, Paavo Nurmi, and plenty of others. But when we actually wanted to see Allyson Felix leading the pack while waving the American flag—so we could toast her with some champagne (or maybe just a Budweiser)—the folks over at NBC decided a matchup between two third-rate soccer clubs was more important.

I suppose the French, the Britons, and the Spaniards definitely caught sight of Blanka Vlašić with that American flag. Probably the Russians, the Chinese, and the Americans did too... even if Americans didn't. Oh well... I guess we’re just used to seeing medals from the World Athletics Championships.

The people at the network seem to think it's just business as usual for an American to grab gold at a world championship. They probably haven't checked the medal counts lately; I should go do that now. It's almost funny how much they take these massive American achievements for granted. I mean, what makes Etto the best in the world anyway?
