Hey everyone. I'm 43 and have been dealing with an L4/L5 herniated disc for about 10 years now. Because of this, I've developed what's called dropped foot left leg. Lately, my back issues have actually calmed down, but now I'm getting hit with constant pain in my left foot. It isn't constant, but it happens all the time and the intensity fluctuates wildly—anything from a weird tingling sensation to sharp, stabbing pains on the outer edge of my foot. I've been hitting physical therapy regularly, but it hasn't touched the pain. If anyone here has dealt with something similar and found a way to fix it, please let me know. Thanks!

I mean, if you’re already out here looking for help on the internet... why not just try Googling the term? So, we're talking about herniated discs now? Great. Just what anyone needs. Honestly, who actually lives a normal life without dealing with some kind of spinal nonsense? It feels like everyone I know is constantly popping something out of place or dealing with nerve pain. Is it just me, or does it feel like our backs are just designed to fail us eventually? What's the move here—surgery, endless physical therapy, or just praying you don't sneeze wrong and end up stuck on the floor? It’s frustrating. Truly....not even a discussion.

Yeah, the condition you're looking at is called a herniated disc. Physical therapy can definitely take the edge off the pain, but if we're being honest, surgery on the spine is really the only way to fix the underlying issue once things get serious. You generally only go under the knife when you've hit those advanced stages. Even then, you’re going to have to overhaul how you live your life—stop lifting heavy crates, watch your posture, and quit sitting around for hours on end without moving. It's non-negotiable.

I found two solid articles that break this down pretty well:
Lower Back Pain (which also covers herniated discs)
Disc Protrusions and Prolapses

If you're feeling any kind of numbness or tingling in your foot—seriously, don't wait on this—you should head straight to the doctor.
