Namely—I had a bit of an accident recently, and even though my nose didn't look broken at first glance, it turns out it definitely was.
The septum is fractured and sitting all crooked now, plus there's a break in the nasal bone itself, so everything is just... off.
Now I have to wait a while for the swelling and bruising to settle down before they can go back in, tear things apart, and put it all back together properly.
I've decided to go through with a septorhinoplasty. It seems pointless to just fix the septum now only to have to deal with those bones again later.
Following some recommendations, I've landed on Dr. Uglešić from the Mayo Clinic, and I really liked his approach to the whole situation—it isn't even about any psychological stuff for me, I just genuinely need my nose straightened out.

Does anyone here have actual experience with Dr. Uglešić, or maybe some insight into his surgical style?

.. from what I've heard, Uglešić is a specialist when it comes to jaw reconstruction (post-accident or for aesthetics) and that's where he focuses most of his work...

Look, I’ve been under general anesthesia myself, and honestly? You won't feel a thing. You just drift off like a baby. I once heard this woman recount her experience getting nose surgery at a clinic near Salat; she opted for local anesthesia instead. She had to sit there for two full hours, listening to the doctors talk about how they were filing down and reshaping her nasal bone. Just the thought of it gives me the chills.😱

Jesse Taylor7, how did you feel right after the surgery when it was time to head home? Were you feeling alright, or was there any bleeding? I’m honestly torn on whether I should stay overnight or just push through and leave. The doctor says it isn't necessary—though, predictably, the nurse thinks staying one more night would be the safer bet—so now I'm stuck in this limbo of indecision.

Yes, you meet with the anesthesiologist before the operation. It is mandatory! You need to be absolutely certain about every single medication you have ever taken in your life. More importantly, you must know if you have any allergies, because that is where the real danger lies—you don't want to find out you're allergic to the anesthesia while you're already under. I found myself in a bit of a bind because I've barely taken any medicine in my entire life, so I had no idea if I was allergic to anything at all.

Honestly, I haven't even figured out what my specific allergens are yet—how am I supposed to know? Perhaps I should start looking into some diagnostic testing.
Oh, right—have you actually gone through the formal testing process at a hospital? And do you need to schedule an appointment in advance for an EKG? What happens if they tell me I have to wait two months for an opening?

You’ll have a gauze pad under your nose that needs changing constantly, because you'll see a bit of blood on it every three or four hours—at least for those first two days. As far as the bleeding goes, that's just part of the process. When I was ready to leave, I actually felt fine. The breathing issues through my mouth didn't bother me much during the day, though it was a nightmare at night; I’d wake up with my mouth feeling completely parched. Both my nurse and the doctor told me there was zero reason to stay overnight. I didn't experience any major setbacks, but I do know of another girl who had surgery the same day and chose to stay—she ended up dealing with massive nausea.

As for the allergies, I assume they’d just refer you for testing to figure it out. Personally, I just went to a private clinic and had everything done in about half an hour.

you can find an EKG at basically any clinic. takes like two minutes.

I honestly haven't decided yet—I need to run it by my mom first to see what she thinks. It might be the safer bet to just stay put, all things considered. You’re lucky, though; you’ve already navigated all of this, whereas I... well, who knows if I'll even live long enough to see it happen...

An EKG is standard equipment in basically any clinic. It takes all of two minutes.

I know, but my mom says that here in the States they make you schedule it—she just isn't sure how long the waitlist is.
Look, I'll just tell them I need it urgently for surgery and call it a day.

It is quite true, though, that Uglešić is an expert in jaw surgery, tumor removal, reconstructive work, and aesthetics alike... the man is simply incredibly versatile, and honestly, one of those rare specialists at MFK who truly possesses a wide-ranging skill set. Personally, I feel that this breadth of expertise is a massive advantage and serves as a wonderful recommendation in its own right.🙏

Hey everyone... This thread seems pretty lively, so I figured I’d jump in and ask a few things... 🙂

I was recently diagnosed with a deviated septum (I have two different reports—one says it's a deviation, the other calls it a defect 😁), and my ENT suggested surgery. Since I've been pretty unhappy with the shape of my nose since I was 18 (not that I'd ever go under the knife just for looks), I thought I might kill two birds with one stone and fix the aesthetics while I'm at it, because honestly, it's kind of ugly 😢 😁

Does anyone know what rhinoseptoplasty costs? Is it priced the same as a purely cosmetic procedure, or does insurance cover part of it?

I’m heading to see Dr. Kalogjera over at Vineyard tomorrow, so I'll probably get all my answers then, but I wanted to check in here first 😁

Hey Jesse Taylor7, how long did you actually wait before your surgery? My doctor told me three weeks—which is just ridiculous—but in that timeframe, I could easily end up getting sick six more times...

And she told me I should probably bring my test results in ahead of time—just so they can take a look at them beforehand

Are you really expected to show up with everything on the actual day of surgery? That wasn't my experience at all. Since I went through a private clinic, there was zero issue regarding pending lab work. She simply faxed the results directly to the surgical center the very same day once everything was processed. The reports clearly stated I was cleared for the procedure.

To be honest, I feel completely lost right now—even though I have this nagging suspicion that everything will eventually settle into place.
But since I’m currently sick and spiraling toward a full-blown sinus infection, I’m terrified my test results won't come back clean. I just don't have the patience to keep waiting like this.
