I went to bed around midnight tonight. After about an hour, I woke up gasping for air with my heart racing. It felt like the palpitations were traveling from my chest all the way down to my stomach. Everything was pounding.
It wasn't a bad night initially. Nothing seemed wrong at first.
Then I sat up and realized things had taken a turn for the worse. I started shaking uncontrollably—and it wasn't just sleep deprivation—and my jaw and throat felt completely locked up near my thyroid area. My throat felt incredibly narrow, almost like I was having an allergic reaction causing immediate swelling. It felt so real that I actually checked myself in the mirror.
The symptoms wouldn't stop. My heart was thumping everywhere, not just in my chest, and the tremors continued. I called 911, but they basically told me I was just having a nightmare and to calm down and grab a drink. I wasn't even agitated until they dismissed me like that.
After about ten minutes, those episodes—the choking sensation, the shortness of breath, the jaw tightness, and the full-body shaking—started to subside. I took a shower and had some chamomile tea, plus my mom gave me a herbal supplement to help me relax.
Now I am afraid to go back to sleep, so I am posting here.
If anyone has insights on this, please reply immediately.
(For context, I have thyroid issues, though my most recent blood work came back normal.)
