I wouldn't say I'm a massive superfan myself, but I definitely have a lot of respect for his work.

I find this particular album a bit of a slog, honestly. It’s upbeat enough, I suppose—my brother is absolutely obsessed with it—but it just doesn't grab me. For my part, aside from en Attendant Causteau, which gave us Calypso, I tend to gravitate toward the heavy hitters: the first Oxygene, Equinoxe, and Concerts in China. Those are the real essentials for me.

The Waiting for Cousteau album—specifically that phenomenal title track in its full, original version—is, in my humble opinion, his absolute best work. Or rather, it’s his most significant achievement. To be honest, he hasn't really touched anything quite like it again in his forty-plus years of making music...😁

While Brian Eno & others were definitely the pioneers who shaped the ambient movement in the 80s, I truly believe this specific project opened the floodgates for the next generation of musicians who came of age from the 90s onward...

It’s been 13 years since that concert in Austin where he pulled off the whole 'Oxygene' set using nothing but 1976 tech, and even threw in those last two tracks from 'Oxygene 7-13' just for good measure.

The top photo shows a musician who actually performs live, handling everything solo. The bottom one? That’s a guy who hauled his gear just to trigger a studio recording and noodle along to the playback. Same city, roughly the same era (1978-1979).
