So, here’s the deal!
I’m 18 and haven't even been sexually active yet, but honestly, based on everything I'm feeling—the discharge, that gross smell, the itching, the stinging, all that—it feels exactly like bacterial vaginosis. And obviously, I want this gone... but like so many people, I am totally dreading that awful gynecologist exam. Since it looks like most meds for BV require a prescription, I guess I have to see a doctor... so my big question is: do I actually need to go through a full pelvic exam before a doctor will write me a script? And could I just handle this with my regular family doctor instead?
please help😢

Honestly, my first guess would be that we're looking at a yeast infection. You don't even really need to see a gynecologist for it; they'll just write you a script for some cream. Or, if you're feeling proactive, you can just grab something like Johnson & Johnson over the counter at any CVS or Walgreens.

There’s an entire thread dedicated to yeast infections over on the Health board, and then there's also stuff about it in the Women's section.
But before jumping to conclusions about fungi, it might actually be a bacterial issue.

Given that you haven't had any sexual intercourse up to this point, I find it highly unlikely that your gynecologist will perform an exam in that "revolting" manner you mentioned. Still, I would strongly advise you to schedule an appointment and be quite candid about your symptoms; it isn't necessarily a yeast infection. There is always the possibility of picking up something from those questionable public restroom seats at a local Starbucks or a mall. If it does turn out to be a yeast infection, however, you should know they can be incredibly stubborn, which is why consulting a professional is really your only practical way forward.

I mean, I’m pretty much 100% certain it isn't Candida... bacterial vaginosis is more like...

I already posted this over on the "Health" board, but I figured it might be better to ask here... and some people were telling me it might be yeast, but it’s definitely not—I was super specific about my symptoms and the two are totally different things.

Hey there, Zadranko...😁 👍

Honestly, you should just head over to your primary care physician and lay everything out—exactly what you’ve shared here...
Even if they end up referring you to an OB-GYN, well, that’s just how life works sometimes. It's part of the process.

You mentioned earlier that you aren't sexually active,
but if that means you're a virgin, don't worry—they won't perform the standard pelvic exam.

I find it hard to believe you’re dealing with bacterial vaginosis... honestly, that would be incredibly rare in your situation. Plus, a gynecologist wouldn't be able to perform a standard exam since you're a virgin.

Seriously, why does nobody believe me when I say it’s vaginitis? I mean... I went down a rabbit hole looking at medical photos online, and there's this exact same weird, white discharge right by the opening... so how could it *not* be me? Like, where on earth would I have even picked that up?😢

What exactly is vaginitis?

Vaginitis refers to inflammation within the vaginal area, often extending to the vulva, and typically manifests through itching, burning sensations, irritation, and abnormal discharge. It stands as one of the most frequent reasons women seek out a gynecologist, with bacterial infections and vulvovaginal candidiasis being the primary culprits. This condition can stem from several different sources:

Infections (infectious vaginitis)
Local physical or chemical irritants (non-infectious vaginitis)
Hormonal shifts (atrophic vaginitis)

Regardless of what specifically triggers this inflammation, it remains a significant source of discomfort and distress for women. If these symptoms aren't identified early and managed with the proper medical intervention, they can unfortunately escalate into chronic issues or more serious health complications.

Based on what you’re describing, it sounds like you're dealing with a case of vaginitis—specifically which can be triggered by yeast, especially if you've been on a long course of antibiotics lately. To put it simply, vaginitis is just the broad term for any inflammation in that area. You really ought to schedule an appointment with your gynecologist to get it sorted out properly.

Douglas Cooper68 said:.but just like everyone else, I want to avoid that disgusting gynecological exam

Look, I’ve had countless pelvic exams in my life and none of them were "disgusting."

If you're sexually inactive, the standard advice is to get your first Pap smear at 18 anyway, so you'll have to face the music eventually.

Just find a recommendation thread or ask a friend, an aunt, or your mom for a doctor they actually trust. When you show up, just tell them it’s your first time and they'll take care of you. It’s really not that big of a deal. 🙂

Honey, that sounds like it could be a yeast infection...

That fungus has absolutely nothing to do with being a virgin, but it can definitely flare up if you've recently finished a course of antibiotics or used a harsh soap that messed with your natural balance.
Typical symptoms include white discharge, itching, and redness.

However, you really need to see a doctor to get a proper diagnosis and a prescription. In the meantime, try eating plenty of yogurt...

Honestly, I’m leaning toward thinking it isn't even yeast—usually, when you're dealing with a yeast infection, there isn't really a smell involved. But seriously, though? You should probably go see a gynecologist just to be safe. Since you don't know exactly which bacteria is causing the trouble, let a pro handle it so they can prescribe the right treatment for you.

It’s hard to argue with what I can see with my own eyes. Honestly, if it isn't that, then where on earth did I even pick this up?😢

It sounds like you're dealing with a yeast infection. You can usually just pick up an over-the-counter cream from a place like Johnson & Johnson to apply topically, and that should do the trick. Since you haven't been sexually active, there isn't a need for a formal gynecological exam right now. I imagine it’s pretty itchy, and if you've been scratching at it, the skin is likely looking quite red and irritated.

Thought I’d jump in on this thread too, since I’m dealing with the whole works—heavy grayish discharge, an unpleasant odor, plus that constant stinging and itching. It's honestly such a hassle. I just started a course of Itraconazole three days ago, so we'll see if that actually does the trick...

Honestly, a gynecological exam isn't quite as scary or gross as it sounds... 🙂
And if you're dealing with this kind of issue, it's probably best to just go... maybe the first time is a little awkward, but eventually, you realize it’s really not a big deal. 😉
A specialist will be able to help you most effectively because they can see exactly what's going on... plus, it helps prevent any potential complications down the road... so, yeah—better to just head to the gynecologist... 🙂

My lady parts are sensitive—excuse my language—and she’d probably need to see an OBGYN every few months if I listened, but that's just not happening. Honestly, I get some discharge, but it doesn't smell, nothing itches, and there's no pain. When I finally bit the bullet and went to the doctor, we ran every STD test and everything else I could think of... turns out my hormones are just all over the place—up one month, normal the next. Nowadays, when things act up, I just grab some herbal tea for women's health. Two cups and it's like it never even happened.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a yeast infection. I dealt with those exact same symptoms once and went to my OBGYN, only to find out it was indeed bacterial vaginosis. They gave me some Dow Chemical cream and a tea tree oil gel, and honestly, I feel great now—no issues at all. I'd suggest just biting the bullet and seeing a specialist; it's probably not wise to DIY something this sensitive, especially before jumping into something heavy like Monistat. You might also look into picking up some Vagisil capsules over the counter; they're pretty good for keeping your flora in balance. 👍
