MR. DEAD'S FEAST (2011)
(When I left you I was just a learner, now I am the master)As most of you ladies and gentlemen know, Mr. Dead's Feast served as the very first official dreDDup album, even though the band actually kicked things off back in 1997. We spent about four years just playing around with different sounds, putting out plenty of DIY demo albums and tapes before the album was finally wrapped up in 2004 and released in 2005. It felt like our first real milestone after all those years, and honestly, we were pretty proud of it at the time. The album was officially released for MoocSound from Holland in 2005 and was printed in 200 DIY copies by the band for the USA. But looking back, wasn't there always something slightly off about that record? It feels like we were all a bit misled by that mainstream sound that was everywhere...
Now that ten years have passed, I’ve made the decision to step back into the studio and record our first official album all over again. To be blunt, that original release took quite a bit of heat for its low production value, shaky vocals, and lackluster instrument recording. It was never my actual intention to make it sound so incredibly cheap and pop-oriented, but I simply didn't have the right gear at the time. While some tracks were cut at Bear, and others at Studio M, we just couldn't capture that raw, live energy that defined dreDDup shows during that era. Most of these songs date back to 1998 or later—I think The Desire was actually the final piece to fall into place in 2004. Looking back, I realize some of the tracks were actually sabotaged by the popular genres we were seduced by at the time, which became our biggest headache after the release. It has haunted me for a decade, but I'm happy to say it's finally over. I've decided to re-record everything from scratch to give that old sound the heavy, angry edge it deserves. Since dreDDup is celebrating 15 years of existence in 2012, this feels like the perfect timing. This release is dedicated to our longtime fans and the crowd that showed up for our shows between 2000 and 2006. We truly believe in the power of these old tracks and finally have the production quality to do them justice. Songs like "Zero Tolerance", "3010", "Trust", "Evil Chicks", "Plastica", "Got 2 Got 2 get", and "Puppet Search" definitely deserve a much cleaner, punchier sound. Our biggest challenge is staying faithful to the original versions without slipping back into the 2011 sound of the band. To help with that, some of the old band members will be joining us in the studio to record these tracks together. It’s going to be one incredible journey through our history and our emotions...
We are currently about one-third of the way through the process. Because of some pesky copyright issues, the song "Eraser" won't be making the cut, and "4th Crusade" will be swapped out for a track from the original album version. Every other song will be there, just featuring a completely revitalized sound. We really hope you love the result as much as we do. We'll be printing a limited edition of 100 CDs and 200 cassette tapes, just like the original run. Also, if you happen to own the original CD, you can grab this new release at a 50% discount. We hope you can find as much joy in these songs as we did ten years ago. Plus, we plan to include some of the songs that were never played live in our future dreDDup sets. There are only four months left 🙂 so I truly hope it's worth the wait.
