Does anyone have a handle on how to actually make the Patch Tool work in CS3? My current process involves circling an area and then dragging the selection over to a clean spot, but once I let go, nothing changes—I just end up losing the original pixels I was trying to fix rather than repairing them.

I’ve been using Adobe Photoshop for ages, starting all the way back with version 6.0 before moving on to CS2 and eventually landing on CS3...
There are plenty of alternatives out there like GIMP or Paint.NET, I suppose.
But honestly, these substitutes just try so hard to mimic Adobe Photoshop and they simply can't pull it off no matter how much they try...

I'm mainly wondering about the resource drain—what kind of hardware are we talking about for a smooth experience?

Even if there isn't anything groundbreakingly new, those smart filters alone might be enough to win me over. 😍
Plus, I love how you can apply a filter as a layer and then just tweak everything even after hundreds of steps, or move things around underneath it. It's such a game-changer! I'm just worried my PC might struggle to keep up.

Honestly, it runs just fine on my old laptop—it's got a 1.6 GHz Pentium IV and 512 MB of RAM, though the integrated graphics grab about 64 MB from that...

Can anyone help me out here? I just finished installing Adobe Photoshop CS3, but I’ve run into this annoying issue where I can't move layers with any real precision. It feels like instead of letting me nudge something just a tiny bit—say, a couple of millimeters—the cursor just jumps past what I'm aiming for. This is a huge deal for my workflow. Honestly, I’d been sticking with Photoshop 7.0 for ages because I couldn't justify upgrading, but it worked perfectly fine; I could move things by a single pixel if I wanted to. Is there some setting I need to tweak or some trick to fix this? :S

Just zoom in on the layer and you should be fine. You can't really get anything precise when you're looking at such a tiny preview.

Oh, I totally get it now—I actually stumbled onto it by complete accident! You have to hold down the Ctrl key while you're moving things around with your mouse. That’s how it automatically snaps everything into alignment with your other layers 😉

It isn't an accident; you simply have Snap to enabled. Go to View-Snap and uncheck it.

I'm currently running an older version of CS, so I figured I might as well just jump straight to the newest thing out there... 🙂🙂

It isn't bad. Adobe doesn't release half-baked software 🙂. If you want to know if it's better than CS3, just ask that. Honestly, if you already own CS3, I don't think upgrading is worth the money since it isn't a massive leap forward. Zooming and panning feel much smoother thanks to OpenGL hardware acceleration via the graphics card, and there is a new document scaling feature. The interface is also a significant improvement. So, take your pick...

It’s the only way to actually get it. Plus, there is a literal trillion tutorials online covering every version from the old-school days to the latest release. Doesn't even matter which version you're watching, because the core stuff stays the same regardless.
