Do we actually need The Godfather Part IV?

Personally, I think The Godfather trilogy consists of the greatest films ever made. Like most people, my favorites are the first two—those are untouchable masterpieces. As for the third one? I’d say it was a decent movie. People love to trash the third part, but in my book, it isn't bad—it just doesn't hit the same heights as the first two, and that's no reason to hate on it.

So, I was watching The Godfather Part II last night—probably the 15th time I've seen it in my life 😁—and I had this random thought to Google "The Godfather Part IV" just to see what would come up... Turns out, I found some stories about how Coppola was dropping hints about making The Godfather Part IV about ten years ago, but then everything just went quiet, especially after Maria passed away in 1999. If Hollywood actually started taking talks about The Godfather Part IV seriously, I don't even know how I'd feel. Part of me really doesn't want it because there's a huge risk of ruining a cinematic perfection like The Godfather saga, but then again, because I'm such a sucker for these three films, another part of me actually wants to see it... So yeah, just curious what you guys think about all this. 🙂

Absolutely not. You don't mess with sacred ground, and you certainly shouldn't poke around just for the sake of it. There is zero chance they produce something even remotely approaching the quality of the original trilogy. They would only succeed in dismantling the integrity of the entire narrative. There has to be a limit.

It’s just unnecessary... honestly. There aren't even any living characters left from the old movies who could actually drive a new story forward or make us care... The Godfather trilogy wraps up Michael Corleone's life story perfectly, and that's that.

Since Coppola hasn't really been at the top of his game for quite some time, I’m going to pass. Besides, there isn't much point in trying; The Godfather trilogy is already such a perfectly self-contained masterpiece.

Well, that's definitely not the Police Academy.

I feel like The Godfather Part III is actually a solid movie, and it does a really beautiful job of wrapping up everything regarding Michael Corleone's life and all that... though, if I'm being honest, it feels maybe two or three steps below the first two films compared to the others.

Honestly, there’s no need to go making some direct sequel about the Corleone family...

But—and this is a big but—someone really ought to put together a solid, sweeping epic exploring how those old-school mafia families would actually function in today's world and all that jazz.

Honestly, even the third installment shouldn't have been filmed in the first place 😳

Just pure, gritty beginnings set deep in those muddy Italian ghettos.

If these three movies aren't enough for you, just go watch whatever they put out on TV. Sure, nothing groundbreaking there, but it's pretty decent reading for a fan 🙂

But this time, we need a teen comedy. Throw in some musical numbers, some vampires, and make it 3D.

Think about it: HBO, the early 1920s, the mafia, Prohibition... plus, imagine having none other than Martin Scorsese as the executive producer and director of the pilot episode!

Look, at least don't ruin the Godfather series with some garbage sequels after they already trashed so many other franchises... so yeah, I'm voting no.

Look, I’m not necessarily saying I’m all for it, BUT why not just shoot something entirely fresh? You could take the narrative right back to the absolute beginning, or maybe dive much deeper into the lore and actually expand the universe... at least when you're dealing with the mafia, there's an endless supply of gritty material to work with. Think about it: after those first two Batman films, every single sequel felt like total garbage, until Nolan took the reins and gave the whole franchise a completely new lease on life.

Look, I’m mostly on the NO side here—mostly because the three existing films are basically sacred ground to me... But I did stumble upon some stuff on Wikipedia about this hypothetical fourth installment. Apparently, the idea was to center everything around Vincent Mancini Corleone, who—according to Francis Ford Coppola—would have had this mix of traits from Santin, Michael Corleone, and Viti... And then, just to top it off, he’d get taken out in some street shootout, kind of like how they handled Pablo Escobar. 🙂

The whole Prohibition era feels a bit too glitzy for me, though. I'm looking for that gritty Little Italy vibe, like where De Niro was in The Godfather Part II.
