Basically, I'm flipping the movie titles around. 🙂
And honestly, calling them "the best" is a massive stretch.

I'm with you on this one! 🙂

I’ve experienced Dark in totally different ways at different times; it all really comes down to what phase of life I’m in and the energy I’m putting out there, so there's no point questioning his worth. If he didn't have value, he wouldn't be hitting us this hard. At the end of the day, personal experience is just a matter of taste, perspective, and whatever else you bring to the table. Art is an interactive thing—I don't see myself as just some passive observer soaking it up.

Butterfly Effect is an interesting flick where a compelling character lands a great role. It leaves a lasting impression, though it’s not really worth a second viewing, which is why I rank Donnie Darko higher. While the former focuses on one guy and the fates of a few individuals, D.D. is universal, capturing the entire spectrum of how our past shapes our future.

I honestly don't see how you can compare these three. Donnie Darko is just on a completely different level—it’s such a brilliant, paradoxical piece of cinema. Then you have Butterfly Effect, which is really just another modern take on that same tired trope of traveling back in time to try and save someone. While that concept lines up with the third movie, Donnie doesn't even belong in that conversation.😛

Donnie Darko rules...🙏

Both of these movies are pretty interesting from a screenwriting standpoint, but they just don't have that same "punch" or deep message you get from Donnie Darko...
Just don't ignore how many teenage girls think Butterfly Effect is amazing, mostly because Ashton is so cute...😉

Donnie Darko is really in a league of its own... everyone experiences it differently I guess...
Some people might just laugh like idiots when they see the rabbit and wonder why there isn't any sex in the movie, while others just end up totally wrecked by how intense the story is...

It’s also worth noting that Jake did a fantastic job playing Donnie...

The Butterfly Effect isn't bad, actually, it's a pretty good film... but it feels a little silly to compare Donnie to Butterfly...

What do you mean they aren't? They both send the exact same message: no regrets after you get laid. 😁

d. Plecko would probably be the best person to break this all down and connect the dots, since this isn't just some mindless flick made for American teenagers...

I’ve seen the first two, but I haven't watched the third one yet.
In my opinion, the first two are actually pretty similar. Sure, Donnie provides a more complex plot, but the core message is more than relatable.
In both movies, you have the protagonists saving one another, going back in time, and trying to change things "for the better."
It’s not quite accurate to say he’s only saving the girl in Butterfly Effect. He kept looping back until everyone was safe, regardless of the cost. Even when he accepts his reality and stays in bed, he ends up going back again because of that situation where the other guy has cancer or something like that.

For me, the best scene is the very last one—when they finally cross paths but don't even recognize each other. It hits hard.

I actually rewatched Donnie Darko last night for the fourth time, digging through the forums and reading every single post in this thread...

If you ask me, those first two are pretty much cut from the same cloth. Sure, people claim Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind has a more complex plot, but honestly, the core message is basically identical.
In both movies, you have this protagonist trying to save someone else, going back in time, and attempting to fix things for the better.
And let's get one thing straight—it's not like in Groundhog Day where he's just saving his girlfriend. He keeps looping until everyone is safe, no matter how messy it gets. Even when he decides to just stay in bed and accept reality, there’s that moment where the other character faces some tragedy—like cancer or something—and he ends up going back in again.

For me, the absolute best part is that final scene where they run into each other but don't even recognize one another. It hits so hard.

I actually sat down last night and rewatched Donnie Darko for the fourth time, digging through old threads on various forums and reading every single post to wrap my head around it all...

Donnie Darko doesn't have a "complex" plot at all; the director just failed to explain it properly, so everyone pretends the movie is somehow "deep"... give me a break.☕

Glee, I finally posted my two cents. For the first three times around, I couldn't make heads or tails of what was happening, but I finally reached a conclusion yesterday.
I’ve been scrolling through some old threads again, just trying to finally slot a few pieces of the puzzle into their rightful places. 😁

Plus, I’ve been scrolling through the threads here trying to finally make sense of all these scattered pieces of the puzzle. 😁

The reason you couldn't wrap your head around it isn't because it's some deep, complex masterpiece; it's because the movie is intentionally nonsensical. It’s designed to leave you hanging without any real answers, not because it's profound, but because it simply doesn't provide them.

In my book, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is way more underrated than people give it credit for.

It's not overrated. It’s just one of those movies where you either love it or absolutely hate it. There really isn't much middle ground.

See, for me, it’s right in that middle zone. It isn't total trash, but I wouldn't call it some kind of cinematic masterpiece either—it's just a slightly above-average flick... maybe worth a watch if you have nothing else to do.

And yeah... it is definitely overrated. 😁

I don't know, I've seen both Donnie Darko and Requiem for a Dream, and while you could definitely draw some parallels between them, if I'm being totally real, they hit me in completely different ways.
Donnie Darko just stuck with me on such a deep level, unlike Requiem for a Dream. Don't get me wrong—that one is good too—but there’s just something almost mystical about Donnie Darko. I hadn't even heard a peep about that movie before I sat down to watch it, so I didn't have any preconceived notions or anything, but man, I walked away feeling totally blown away and, honestly, a little shaken up.
