So, about a week ago, I wiped out on my scooter on a sharp right turn. My shoulder swelled up a little, but honestly, the pain wasn't even that bad at first. I went to see my primary care doctor—she gave me some pills, I picked up some topical gel, and she basically told me I just bruised it and would be fine in about ten days.
Fast forward seven days later, and things haven't improved one bit. Yesterday afternoon, while I was passing by the local hospital, I decided to swing by the ER. Since they weren't slammed, they actually saw me pretty quickly.
They ran some imaging on the shoulder, and the doctor diagnosed me with a "dislocated shoulder." He saw the hematoma and checked the X-rays, then recommended I fully immobilize my arm and shoulder. I pushed back a little—mostly because I showed up on my scooter and didn't want to be totally stuck—so he just gave me a sling around my neck and told me to find someone to help me apply a Dessen wrap.
Now I'm sitting here wondering what the move is. Maybe I should actually take some sick leave and follow his advice to stay immobilized for at least 10 days. I'm really torn on what to do...

But seven days later, nothing had changed. Yesterday afternoon, while passing by the local hospital, I decided to swing by the ER. Since they weren't slammed, they saw me pretty quickly...
They took an X-ray of my shoulder, and the doctor diagnosed me with a "dislocated shoulder joint." He saw the hematoma on the shoulder and looked at the imaging, then recommended total immobilization of my arm and shoulder. I didn't really want to commit to that because I was there on my scooter, so he just gave me a sling around my neck and told me to come back with someone who could apply a Dessen bandage...
Now I'm stuck wondering what to do. Maybe I actually should take some sick leave and stick to that full immobilization for the ten days he suggested... I'm just not sure.

What do you guys think?
Forget doctors... if you're riding a scooter, you're asking for trouble. What's the big deal if someone else just looks out for you?😁

Well, I didn't catch it in my leg—it was my hand this time—so at least I don't have to be stuck in bed all day...😲

My boss is breathing down my neck again, but hey—that’s just how things work around here. We call ourselves a social safety net, yet when you actually need one, it's nowhere to be found. In a place like Sweden, you could probably take five days off just because you feel like it, without needing some doctor's note to prove you're human.😲

Nonexistent. In a place like Sweden, you could probably take five days off sick without even needing a doctor's note...😲

Man, I hope the boss trips over his own ego!😈

So, I did a little digging into my own medical mess—here’s the breakdown of what happened to my left shoulder... after taking a hard hit, I ended up with an AC joint dislocation (circled)—you know, the spot where the scapula meets the clavicle. Basically, the surrounding ligaments snapped, and my collarbone popped up about 5 mm out of place... here are the scans

I mean, just imagine if things go sideways on you. You’d have to take that boss down!

I honestly thought I could just power through—maybe bulk up a little, hit the gym, and get back at it. I mean, we’ve all had those moments where we take a hard fall and just try to shake it off, right?
I’m not really the type to go running to a doctor for every little ache and pain; I usually wait until things get absolutely unbearable before I even consider it... maybe that's a bad habit, but hey, it is what it is.
To make matters worse, my boss is an absolute moron—not even considering his health issues, he's just a jerk by nature—so knowing how he'd react, I tried to push myself to work as long as I possibly could, but my body just wasn't having it.
That's just capitalism for you...

Watch out for that arm. It’s probably going to stay a little sensitive forever. My guy had his shoulder pop out once, and then it happened twice more on that same side—not even from anything heavy, just from being careless. Once the pain subsides, start doing some strength training to stabilize it and definitely go talk to a physical therapist.
And yeah, your boss is an idiot.

So, I figured that was the case—that whole "shoulder instability" thing...
thanks...

My boss is an idiot, plain and simple—regardless of his health issues—so knowing how he'd react, I tried my hardest to keep working, but I just couldn't do it anymore.

Man, I totally get you. Back in fifth grade, I stretched a ligament in my wrist and was dealing with the pain for a whole year after that. The worst part? I couldn't even think about playing music for a month and a half. Ugh, I hated those moments so much!😠

It’s pretty grim stuff—you really have to watch out. Just yesterday, my buddy’s father-in-law and mother-in-law got into an accident—it was even in the news. They were out driving around Austin, stone-cold sober, of course... because why wouldn't they be?

Things are looking up—actually, they’re looking better. The pain has finally started to back off, so I’m thinking maybe in another 5 or 6 days I'll be back to my usual self... though I am dying to see what the trauma specialist at the Mayo Clinic has to say during my follow-up this Thursday.
Has anyone else gone through something similar?

It’ll be fine—you actually went to see the doctor when you were supposed to, unlike me. I usually wait until I'm completely fed up before even thinking about making an appointment, e.

Look, I definitely made it in on time, 9 days after the fall... I honestly thought I just had a minor muscle strain in my hip, but turns out...
A buddy of mine had a similar wipeout and ended up with a fractured collarbone—it basically healed crooked. Now his shoulder looks totally lopsided compared to the other side..

So, they finally took the brace off today. It feels pretty good—though my arm is still kind of weak and achy, to the point where I can't even lift a glass properly. My doctor says once I get started on some physical therapy, everything should snap back to normal...
I guess I also need to be extra careful with this shoulder, too. If I take another tumble on it, I’m looking at snapped ligaments, and then they’d have to go in and stitch everything back together with surgery...
