But seriously, how am I even supposed to get an accurate reading if my eyes were totally trashed all day? Like, this morning I popped my contacts in, grabbed my solution bottle, and could actually read those tiny print letters up close... I was feeling pretty great about myself for a second there. πŸ™‚

Three days? πŸ™‚
And I don't even own sunglasses. I’m just not a glasses person, period, so I don't have any shades either. πŸ™‚

Well, if Mom says so, then Mom knows, right? 😁
But honestly, people like us who actually deal with astigmatism? We haven't got a clue. 😬

So, your doctor in Pittsburgh was dilating your pupils to check out your retina, right? Honestly, you should probably just ask him why he’s so obsessed with your eye healthβ€”usually, they're just hunting for any weird changes in the macula, but I’m guessing everything looked totally fine since he didn't drop any bad news on you.

The effects should wear off in maybe half a day at most... just try to avoid bright lights if you can help it. And if you absolutely have to go out, well, prepare for some temporary blindness... but please, for the love of god, don't get behind the wheel of a car.

I’ve also heard that dilation is standard for checking the retina. The only time my pupils were ever dilated was when I was 14 after needing glasses for the first time. That happened at a public hospital. I remember the blurry vision cleared up pretty quicklyβ€”within a day or twoβ€”but I had to skip school that day and was told to avoid heavy reading or eye strain. Since then, I’ve mostly seen a private ophthalmologist who uses various specialized tools (though I’m not entirely sure what all the 😁 gadgets actually do) without dilating my eyes. These days, I just get my prescription checked before ordering new contact lenses.

How can you be farsighted when you have a nearsighted prescription? πŸ€” If I understood you right, you mentioned your eye exam results earlier and they were all negatives. πŸ€”

If you're in the minus range, you're actually nearsighted (maybe with astigmatism)β€”farsightedness is the plus side.

I wonder why my doctor never used those drops on me?πŸ™‚
I'll just ask her next time I head in for a checkup.😁 😬

p.s. My sister actually had her pupils dilated once, but she was totally fine by the next day. She just wore sunglasses that first day to deal with the light, so it wasn't even an issue.πŸ‘

so, just a heads up... astigmatism and nearsightedness aren't actually the same thing

Edward Green, my little one actually poked me right in the eye recently and tore through that thin, slimy outer layerβ€”I think it's called the 😬 corneaβ€”leaving a tiny half-centimeter hole in it.

During the exam, the doctor used drops to dilate my pupils, and let me tell you, I was miserable for two full days. Honestly, it would have been even worse if I hadn't seen this great specialist who gave me some counteracting drops to help constrict my pupils faster. I'm really grateful to him. 😍

Having blurry vision is irritating; it gives you headaches and makes sunlight unbearable. You definitely shouldn't be driving at all. πŸ™„

If you're asking whether you can get that something? πŸ˜• 😬

For real? So what actually is astigmatism then? Why did I think they were linked?πŸ€” πŸ˜•

Since we’re already playing around with technical terms, let's get one thing straight: short-sightedness is actually called myopia. πŸ˜›

I’ve had my eyes dilated a few times, and honestly, it was a miserable experience. My pupils are naturally tiny, which is actually why I ended up sitting through those exams in the first place. But I just don't get itβ€”why on earth would they use such massive doses on people who have perfectly normal pupil sizes? πŸ˜•

Yeah, I did a quick Google search just now, but thanks for the lesson.πŸ˜‰>

Nah, that's not quite right πŸ˜‰
cylindrical lenses are specifically for correcting astigmatismβ€”they're just a different type of lens altogether!

My pupils finally went back to a normal size. πŸ™‚
The last time I saw him, he prescribed those drops to dilate my eyes because I was dealing with chronic conjunctivitis. The bacterial swab came back negative, and the chlamydia test was negative too.
He told me to just use Refresh eye drops. So, I am.

Nobody even bothered to diagnose my astigmatism when I was ten years old. Not once.
Not from any of themβ€”whether they were private doctors or part of the big hospital networks.
Back when I actually wore glasses, they told my mom the cylinder correction was just there because my prescription was so high. Honestly, none of this makes sense to me now.

It doesn't really make sense, unless maybe you just double down on one specific direction πŸ€”

Edward Green said:How on earth are you farsighted when you have a negative prescription? πŸ€” If I read you right, you listed your vision stats above and they’re all in the negatives. πŸ€”

The day after my pupils were dilated, I couldn't read anything up close. So yeah, with those lenses, I was farsighted. With the lenses. I use lenses to see, obviously.
That’s why I don't get how anyone can accurately judge their prescription while their eyes are still dilated. πŸ˜•

Edward Green said:The day after my pupils were dilated, I found it impossible to read anything up close. Apparently, my contact lenses made me farsighted. Usually, with my contacts, my vision is fine.
I'm just not sure how they can accurately determine my prescription when my pupils are dilated like that. πŸ˜•

I remember having that exact same experience after getting my eyes dilated. It turned out my prescription was actually much higher than I thought. However, that measurement wasn't even the final wordβ€”they had to re-test me once my pupils returned to normal. I just recall them shining a bright light into my eyes in a completely dark exam room, which made me see these shimmering little lines everywhere. 😲 It certainly wasn't the most comfortable sensation... πŸ™„ 😁

Edward Green said:The day after they dilated my eyes with those drops, I couldn't read anything up closeβ€”like, at all. So, basically, the contacts made me farsighted... while wearing contacts. And usually, I can see fine with them.
Which is why I don't get how they can even figure out my prescription when my pupils are blown wide open like that. πŸ˜•

It doesn't work like that. They nail down your actual prescription *before* they dilate your eyes. The dilation part is just so they can get a clear look at your retina... you know, check the back of the eye stuff.
