Best video editing software?

I'm looking for some software to handle video editing and processing—something with special effects and the like. If anyone knows of a good program, please let me know.

If you want the absolute best, it’s definitely Adobe Premiere combined with Adobe After Effects.
For simpler stuff, maybe just grab Pinnacle studio or Ulead Video studio.
Look, they're all commercial programs, but if you're hunting for free options, I guess you could try messing around with VirtualDub or Wax-.

How do I convert AVI to DVD with subtitles included? I've got a mountain of files here, but I can't find a single program that actually lets me burn the subtitles in.

With
Handbrake, you can just name the subtitle file the exact same thing as the movie and keep them both in the same folder—it'll pick it up automatically. Or, if you're feeling a bit lazy and don't want to mess with renaming everything, you can just manually select the track from the menu.
It's usually best to keep those subtitle files in ".srt" format.
