Does anyone happen to know the caloric density of mushrooms (button mushrooms, for instance)?
In terms of nutritional profile, do they actually qualify as one of those "superfoods" packed with vitamins and minerals, or is that just marketing hype?
To put it in simpler terms: are we talking about something fundamentally good for you, similar to drinking a glass of milk, or is it more along the lines of eating a bar of chocolate—where the downsides arguably outweigh the benefits?
😁

Look, I can't really do much dairy, chocolate is a total no-go for me, and I try to stay away from mushrooms too. 😁

So... yeah... 🤔 ...... maybe there's actually SOMETHING positive about this after all... 🙂

By the way, does this belong in the food section? 😎

On the Health forum, you’ve got at least three or four different threads dedicated entirely to debating food quality and nutritional value.

Fair enough, I'll look into it, but my main concern is whether we can actually classify this as healthy food or not.
It’s like when you absolutely hate spinach, but you know it's packed with nutrients, so you force yourself to eat it anyway. It's the same logic with mushrooms, really.😬

Mushrooms aren't some mandatory dietary requirement.

It’s just like spinach; if someone can't stand the taste, there are plenty of other vegetables out there to pick from.

Honestly, I’d pick mushrooms over steak any day of the week. 🙂 I’m actually craving some right now if I had any leftovers sitting in the fridge.
Mushrooms have like 20 calories per 100 grams, and yeah, they're definitely healthy food. Well, assuming you don't pick the poisonous ones, obviously. 😁

I'm obsessed with mushrooms, honestly, no matter how you cook them. 🙂 ...not really keeping track of the calories or nutritional stuff though. 😳

Honestly, the food scene over at Preck's is just on another level—they have this incredible mushroom veggie sandwich that costs about $4.00, and I think I’m officially addicted. The only catch is that you have to be a bit patient while you wait, since they actually bake their bread fresh right there...

Supposedly oyster mushrooms have anti-cancer properties (don't quote me on that). Personally, they’re incredible... putting them on the grill tomorrow while my mom and grandma can go ahead and choke on their burgers 😁

Here’s a more detailed breakdown from the pages I stumbled upon on a quick search:

Anthony Miller13 said:Is that actually considered "healthy" produce—loaded with vitamins, minerals, and all that good stuff—or is it just hype?
Let's keep it simple: is this actually a net positive, or is it like eating chocolate? You know, something that feels good in the moment but ultimately does more harm than good?
😁

Haha! Now that’s a solid question. 🙂

Mushrooms are packed with protein but have zero fat. Honestly, they beat out chocolate any day of the week—maybe even milk. That said, you do get calcium from dairy, though you can pull that from eating fish with the bones in too. 😬 For real though.

Does anyone here actually know much about those wood ear mushrooms? They're edible, right?

I'm thinking about some homemade apple butter 😉

You know, that thick, gelatinous kind that you can spread on a heavy slice of sourdough—the stuff that stays good all year round.

Honestly, I don't really care much either way.

I’m a huge fan of all kinds of mushrooms—porcini, oyster, button, truffles... even the ones people debate whether they actually count as fungi or not.

That said, I have to admit, once you start prepping them with heavy cream, cheese, and all those other delicious additions, they definitely stop being "diet food."😁

Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating just a little... if you just grill some fresh button mushrooms, toss them with chopped parsley, and hit them with a bit of olive oil and lemon juice, it’s far from a calorie bomb, yet it still tastes incredible.😛

Personally, I find them absolutely revolting!
