Sure, there wasn't really a set criteria here. For example, Jackie Brown wasn't some avant-garde indie flick watched by five people in a basement—it had a decent theatrical run and did okay at the box office. It’s just overlooked because it didn't get even 5% of the massive marketing push that other Tarantino films or Tarantino-esque films received.

Since you brought up Leigh, Secrets and Lies is absolutely top-tier.

I'm not sure who you're referring to, but I'm ready to jump in whenever you have something to share!
Oh, I just adore these lists... though, honestly, here I go again, basically trying to reinvent the wheel by pointing out that the criteria used here feel a little bit off. I mean, what does "overlooked" actually signify in this context?

In an American context, we’re really talking about those films that never quite made it past the initial buzz or failed to find their footing beyond the early stages of release. art-house I really think we need to talk about cinema.

In the American version—he didn't play outside. Film Archive. 😁

...or, to put it more simply, these are just those movies that always seem to get unfairly overlooked whenever people start talking about the "greatest" films of the 1990s.

Carlito's Way I was just thinking about Brian De Palma. He really struggled to find his footing here in the States, which is such a shame because while he didn't exactly break the box office in America, he’s always been held in such high regard by critics over there. Even the French critics tend to rave about him. Sight & Sound does Cinema They actually went ahead and declared it the best film of the nineties—I mean, honestly, how many famous directors have to thank God for the French? 😁 )

...
I honestly find it a little surprising that nobody thought to include this one on the list. Hudson Hawk. 😛😁😬

The Castle ( 1997)

It’s this little, low-budget underdog of a comedy from Australia that just has so much heart. Since Miramax handled the international distribution, you’ll probably catch it popping up on some local network like ABC or maybe a random channel on cable every once in a while
when they decide to rotate through their modest movie library.

It’s practically a children's movie—much more wholesome than Robin Hood...😁

One movie that definitely earned its spot on this list is "Dead Again"...

Jose Chase2 said:Oh man, yeah—another total gem right here. John Milius's 'Rough Riders.' Sure, it’s technically a TV movie, but honestly? It blows 90% of Hollywood productions out of the water.🙂 🙂

I haven't checked that one out yet, but his TV movie 'Motorcycle gang' is freaking incredible.
And I think I might be the only one here—I just looked up his IMDb and the average rating is a brutal 3.9/10. Someone even left this review:
This is officially THE worst film ever made. It is terrible! The acting is awful, the sets are awful, the editing is awful, the plot is awful, the props are awful, the soundtrack is awful, I simply could not state one positive comment about this movie! Set in the fifties, you can blatantly see 90's cars roaming around, the bikes the 'Gang' use are rusting even though they are ahead of their time, this is diabolical. Words cannot describe it! Take my advice - avoid this piece of junk at all costs! It will be the biggest waste of 80 minutes you could ever imagine.

ShatteredIt’s a great film by Wolfgang Petersen—honestly, that ending feels just like something out of the Sixth Sense.

"The Sixth Sense"?
Hmm, it reminds me of a watered-down Hitchcock...
