Ipanema said:Right now, the one film that really sticks in my mind for its sheer visual impact is The Cell.

Yeah, if I recall correctly... I think the director is Indian. He used to do music videos, and honestly, I've never seen anything quite like that kind of visuals in a mainstream Hollywood movie.

bogeyman said:Sleepy Hollow. Basically anything Tim Burton makes.

Then there's Wolf Brotherhood, Mediterraneo (it isn't exactly a visual masterpiece, but looking at those landscapes makes me want to pack my bags and move to... let's say, Maui), Apocalypse Now (especially that ending), Cube, and the whole Evil Dead horror series. 😁

That's what's coming to mind right now.

My top 10 visuals, not necessarily in order:

Bram Stoker's Dracula
Blade Runner
Vampires- Carpenter
What Dreams May Come
--forget R. Williams, I'm talking about the pure visual vibe here--
Stargate
Sleepy Hollow
Beetlejuice
The Mummy 1,2 The Cell
The Cell (minus Jennifer Lopez)
Star Troopers (minus the dumb plot and all that militaristic nonsense)

Well, fine! If nobody else is going to do it, I will—and yeah, I’m talking about all three books in the series!

It’s gotta be Hero aka Yiong Xiong, then maybe Blade Runner, followed by Piano and Betty Blue—oh, and Tim Burton's stuff too. Then there's Big Blue, Sky over Berlin, Empire of the Sun, and The Lover. I might even throw in Titus and Merlin (98) if we're feeling adventurous.
Man, there are just too many... no way am I picking just one.

Oh, come on... no way... it's just incredible... honestly, the movie is absolutely divine and stunningly beautiful. It’s so original, and there's even this subtle touch of irony in there, too. That Jackson guy is a straight-up genius.... he really showed us something totally fresh in the world of cinema.

Anyone remember Times Square, Fassbinder, and that one shot he pulled off in close-up?😳

I mean, visually... it was pretty killer.

Valis said:Yes, if I recall correctly... I believe the director is of Indian descent, and he previously directed music videos, which explains why I haven't encountered such striking visual storytelling in mainstream cinema before.

The film itself is quite poor, though one has to admit the CG is utilized effectively... I am reminded of those massive, Bosch-inspired underworld landscapes.

By the way, Tarsem Singh isn't actually his real name, and if I'm not mistaken, he might not even be Indian.

"Losing My Religion" was his thesis project during his graduate studies at the Art Center in Pasadena.

He's an Indian.

I was watching this interview he did—he claims that over in India, you can really only be a lawyer or a doctor if you want respect. Anything else is basically looked down on, and apparently, that even includes being a film director. 😁

Beyond just Blade Runner...

The Last of the Mohicans - Mann
Last Temptation of Christ - Scorsese
Last Emperor - Bertolucci

p.s. once I actually sat down and wrote this list out, I realized they all have "last" in the title; you could even call Blade Runner "Last Replicant" if you wanted to be pedantic.😉

I have to admit, Cell is quite a striking visual experience when you watch it on DVD.

However, if we're talking about pure visual impact, nothing hits quite like "The Fifth Element". From its depiction of a futuristic world to those special effects—which, let's be honest, coming from 1997, look significantly better than the CGI used in several big-budget releases from just last year. Beyond the aesthetics, it’s easily one of the best films out there...

What other movies have left a lasting impression on you? For me, it's things like "What Dreams May Come" or "Sleepy Hollow"...

Dusty Springfield said:Definitely Hero, then maybe Blade Runner....

I went straight to Blade Runner too... though you probably only suggested Hero because you haven't seen Samsara... what a shot...🙏
