Oh, right, it just hit me: I have to mention Aleksei Balabanov’s "Of Gods and Men"! The entire movie is bathed in this sort of sepia tone that fits the atmosphere so perfectly... those empty streets, the desolate squares. It is absolutely phenomenal!
As for more recent stuff, Andrey Zvyagintsev’s "Resurrection" stands head and shoulders above everything else! That ending, where it turns into a series of still photographs—it almost feels like they’re trying to explain the whole film through those images.

maristella69 said:Do you guys remember Alexanderplatz, Fassbinder, and that one thing he put in a close-up?😳

I mean, visually, it was pretty striking.

Are you talking about when Hans (or maybe Franz) Bibikov takes off his cloak and just goes for "it" in that close-up shot?

(if you strip away the silly plot and that militaristic society)

Toooooooo! Honestly, Starship Troopers is great. Thanks for reminding me of Verhoeven—he’s easily one of my favorites:
Total Recall
Flesh+Blood🙂

"Every day I kiss God on the mouth"
The cinematography in digibeta.sephia is just breathtakingly beautiful.

Then there's "28 Days Later," which carries that same unmistakable visual signature found in everything captured by Anthony Dod Mantle—truly the finest cinematographer working today.

I just thought of two more—Indochine (1992) and The Scent of Green Papaya.

Just speaking generally—before I dive into a watchlist that I already know is going to frustrate me—I have to say that almost everything by Stone, Wyler, Hitch, or Russell is just so visually stylized and perfect...

Without any particular rhyme or reason, a few films have been drifting through my mind lately:

A Clockwork Orange
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Dead Man
Blade Runner
Lawrence of Arabia
The Shining
Ben-Hur
Dune
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Aside from the top spot

Blade Runner

everything else feels a bit disorganized:

2001: A Space Odyssey
Aliens
Star Wars
Lord of the Rings
Contact
The Third Man

I guess there'd be plenty more to list too
