I like to think of myself as a Tolkien fan 🙂—I've read everything except the History of Middle-earth, which I'm actually working through right now... but I honestly don't get this bitterness toward the filmmaking. To me, the movies are great. They obviously lack the sheer depth and exhaustive detail of the prose—that would be an impossible mountain to climb—but I think the films (specifically PJ) did a stellar job capturing the essence and spirit on screen... and I'm genuinely glad they were made. The Hobbit will be just as good... and maybe the Silmarillion 🙂 could be done as a mini-series (something along the lines of a high-budget fantasy epic or even a stylized period piece)🙂

About a month ago, I caught a segment on Fox News featuring Ian " Gandalf" McKellen.
He confirmed that the producers have already secured the funding and that he’s officially accepted the role of Gandalf in the Hobbit.
When asked, "Will Jackson be directing the Hobbit?" his response was quite telling: As a huge Tolkien-esque fan, it’s truly an honor to play Gandalf—but I do feel a bit disappointed that we Americans aren't able to produce a film based on a Tolkien book ourselves. I'm not entirely sure if Jackson will be at the helm, but hey, when Hollywood gets involved, you never know!

Man, it would be so awesome if we had some other director at the helm!👍

I am not entirely sure how many of you are even aware that there exists an animated Hobbit film, produced back in what I believe was a certain year, which I personally find quite charming, though naturally, it lacks the sheer caliber of the animated LOTR film that eventually achieved such legendary cult status...

...so what, we're just supposed to sit through the entire movie acting like it's the last thirty minutes of return of the king???

I’d film The Hobbit with some indie studio—something dark and claustrophobic. Use that "less is more" approach where what you can't see is what scares you most. Aside from the dragon scenes, then I could go all out with the CGI.😍 But still, keep it dark and barely visible. Just make sure the sound design hits hard. I want my stomach to churn when that dragon bursts out of the cave. I hope Peter is reading this.

Oh, and the colors need to be washed out. Not full-on sepia, but close.

From what I can gather, the film rights haven't even been sorted out yet, and without those, there's no movie at all.

Honestly, I don't think Jackson was being entirely serious when he mentioned filming The Hobbit. I suspect he was just feeling a bit down because LOTR was officially behind him, and it seemed like a nice excuse to get back together with basically the same crew.
His recent comments really seem to back that up.

Plus, he’s got to keep things moving at his own WETA studio. 🙂

There used to be all this talk about how, after LOTR, he might tackle a smaller, more intimate project (something along the lines of Heavenly Creatures), while spending his weekends shooting zombie flicks (just like he did with bad taste). But then, of course, he had to rush off to work on King Kong.

The Hobbit. It looks like Sam Raimi is stepping in to direct, while Peter Jackson stays on as producer. You have to wonder, though—why isn't he behind the camera himself?

It all goes back to the legal mess Peter Jackson kicked up against New Line Cinema over the profits from the "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" DVD release. His argument was pretty straightforward: he couldn't realistically direct a massive production for a studio that he was currently suing. New Line Cinema felt the exact same way, basically saying they weren't comfortable having him in the director's chair while the litigation was active. They actually tried to cut a deal, suggesting he drop the suit and take the directing gig instead, but he wasn't having it. He pointed out the obvious: you can't manage the crushing pressure and massive scale of a blockbuster while you're simultaneously locked in a courtroom battle with the people signing your checks.

That said, things eventually started looking up between PJ and New Line. Back on July 19, 2007, Ian McKellen noted, "I detect that there is movement and it's movement in the right direction. I'll be seeing Peter Jackson when we tour New Zealand next month. I hope it will happen." Sure enough, we got the official word from New Line and MGM on December 18, 2007 that Jackson's issues have been resolved, and that he and Fran Walsh will be Executive Producers for the project.

Not sure if this has come up yet—if it has, apologies for the redundant interruption. The Hobbit is moving into production as a two-part film. There’s a new actor playing Bilbo (the one from LOTR was far too old), and while Peter Jackson is attached as an executive producer, we still don't know who will actually direct.

It’s a bummer that Jackson isn’t directing this one.😢

For all you folks who live and breathe J. R. R. Tolkien’s perfect little illusion called Middle-earth (honestly, same here! 😍😍😍), looks like filming for "The Hobbit" is set to kick off in 2009, with the movie probably hitting theaters around 2011... I guess we Tolkien fans just gotta hang in there and wait a bit, but man, I really want to see what P. Jackson does with "The Hobbit"!!! 😲

I’m honestly just dying for a decent adaptation of The Hobbit—because, if I’m being totally real with you guys, that book actually hit me way harder than The Fellowship of the Ring (and especially compared to those last two books in the Lord of the Rings trilogy).

I can't wait to see how they handle Mirkwood, Smaug, and all that...

I’m pretty hyped for this movie, but I’ve got one nagging concern: the new director and the casting choices for the hobbits.😢
