Animated GIFs - delayed comment

I’m a bit late to the party on this thread regarding why destroy the topic 'Funny Photos'? Honestly, those massive, multi-megabyte posts filled with nothing but GIFs really get under my skin, which is what drove me to open this discussion. I see this as a way to support our new moderator over in the Jokes section—provided she actually intends to enforce things, specifically the new rule banning those heavy GIFs from the dedicated funny photo threads.

I’m not necessarily calling for a total ban on GIFs, whether we're talking about the Jokes subforum or anywhere else, but I do feel they should have their own dedicated threads. Anyone who ignores that rule should probably get a warning, with the GIF itself being deleted or moved to the right spot.

I’d suggest the supermods and admins take a closer look at the new 'Funny Photos Vol. 2' thread. It’s turned into a complete mess of off-topic chatter, trolling, and spam... and for some reason, maybe because she’s worried about causing a scene😁, the moderator hasn't stepped in to penalize those responsible.

It shouldn't be uploaded at all unless it's via a URL; at that point, I don't care if the thing is 300 MB. ☕

Setting a limit is easy enough, it's not a huge deal, but if you're asking me for my take, I wouldn't want to go over 250kb per image (not counting animated GIFs!!!). Of course, maybe someone could get special permission from a moderator for exceptional cases, like if an image was incredibly long...

I mean, wouldn't it be way better if we didn't just dump all those images and GIFs into the Funny Photo thread, and instead just described them with words? Maybe then you'd actually be happy since the thread would load much faster on your modem.

If the thread is taking forever to load, I guess you just shouldn't open it on your phone (which is what most of the admins here do; I don't mean everyone, just most of them, so nobody feels called out...).

Wouldn't it be simpler, more practical, and perhaps a bit more polite toward those who aren't exactly tech-savvy—you know, the IT-challenged crowd—to have specific threads dedicated solely to photos, and others just for animations?

My phone isn't quite up to the task; it's an iPhone 6.☕

First off, thanks for the support!

Regarding the ban on GIFs in the photo thread, it isn't even really about file size or slowing down the site loading times. I just wanted to keep those two things separate because there are plenty of hilarious GIFs out there that deserve their own space. I don't see any reason to mix animations and still images when they can easily live in two different threads.

And I'm guessing this comment wasn't meant to spark a huge debate, so maybe the thread can be locked?

Look, you could have just played it smart and said, "Hey, posting Google in that old thread is gonna get you flagged," then just started a fresh one for all the Google spam so everyone stays happy, but instead, you just sort of threw this together and it's honestly kind of a mess... ☕
