I suppose I find myself in agreement with that—though, as always, I suspect there might be more to the story than what’s being presented here. 🙂
Certainly, though probably to a much lesser degree. I suppose one could spend an eternity being hyper-vigilant—constantly policing every single word written—just to ensure nothing inadvertently slips through the cracks that might suggest they aren't of the opposite sex. It seems like a rather exhausting way to live, if you ask me.
That would be nothing more than pure theater—if you could even call it that.😍

It’s pretty crucial to keep track of someone's gender during an argument—you know, if you actually intend on getting under their skin. Because, let's be real... if you go after a woman, it could easily be twisted into a claim of sexual harassment.

But what about men? 😁 What if he's gay? 😲
I totally get it, though—it could definitely be seen as a comment on someone's sexual orientation too. 👋

Jacob Foster11 said:I agree, that would be useful. I always have to click on a profile when I'm unsure. This would definitely make identifying genders easier. 👍

It doesn't need to be complicated. Just add symbols like: ♀ ♂

supported 👍

Here’s a quick example of what I mean 🙏🤣

I have to disagree; this idea isn't nearly as simple to pull off as it seems.
If we were handling registration, I think users would just choose their own gender anyway.
First off, if we implemented the symbols that Jacob Foster11 suggested, half the community probably wouldn't even know which icon represents which gender.
Second, you always have those people who intentionally enter the wrong information just to be difficult.
In my opinion, if we really wanted accuracy, everyone's Social Security Number should be listed right next to their username.
That way, there wouldn't be any confusion when someone starts talking trash about what another user wrote, and you'd actually know exactly whose house to drive to if you felt like settling the score physically.
The whole concept misses the mark entirely.
On a side note, I’ve noticed a sudden surge of suggestions lately on how to "improve" the site; I can't tell if people are just bored or if they're all trying to audition for moderator positions.
Honestly, the forum is perfectly fine just the way it is.

And why do we constantly have to repeat things that have already been said?

How many times does the same thing need to be said before people stop asking the exact same questions over and over again?

They don't know anything because they refuse to think for themselves. First off, it's just basic common sense. Second, the signs are perfectly logical. Honestly, someone should just teach them how it works.

But that’s honestly irrelevant. It’s like they're obsessed with making sure signs are just standing there for no reason. 🙄 If you have such a massive problem with gender markers, just write "male" or "female." It shouldn't be that difficult for you. 🙄

Honestly, the forum is perfectly fine just the way it is.

The point is completely missed. It doesn't matter whether that person's gender matches their profile or not.

Gender selection is already available on the forum. There is absolutely no need for some ridiculous "verification" process. If a man feels like a woman, he should just set his profile to female—regardless of biological reality. Same goes for the reverse.

It is vital to address someone according to their declared gender. Use masculine pronouns for men and feminine for women. To be clear: the actual biological reality is irrelevant.

I am repeating myself once again (since apparently it needs to be said). The gender field would only be provided for those users who actually want it—meaning, only for those who define it themselves. It’s exactly how it works right now. This wouldn't be some mandatory requirement that you have to fill out just to access the forum.

Note:
It’s just as irrelevant whether someone entered their actual birth date or simply made it up. A date of birth is just another piece of data currently sitting on this forum.

Honestly, the forum is perfectly fine just the way it is.

So, you think—I don't know, maybe I'm overthinking this—that they just let you input your gender if you actually want to, but they just make it, like, super low-key? Not exactly front and center?
First off—if we actually went through with those symbols Jacob Foster11 is pushing, half the people on this forum wouldn't even know which one meant male.

Maybe they should just learn. I mean—seriously—it’s not that hard.
And hey, you could always just go with letter labels instead. I guess that works too.

There are also the trolls—or just people who go out of their way to put in the wrong gender.

Look, it’s their business. Honestly—gendered pronouns only really matter when you're actually addressing someone else. Everything else is just noise.
Look, I have to ask—are you actually being this dense? Or maybe you're just being willfully ignorant? Because you keep dragging up these same old grievances that were addressed ages ago. It’s getting old. Honestly, I don't even know if I should check your profile or dig through your old posts to see how you talk about your own life experiences—though, I guess, I could probably just take a wild guess based on your username.

I honestly think everyone should be required to display their Social Security number right next to their username. Just a thought.

I think you’re seriously overreacting here.
Then there wouldn't be any confusion about getting screwed over—like someone else mentioned earlier—and I’d actually know exactly whose nose I need to come over and break.
The whole idea is a total bust.

You're probably right about that.
So, I’ve been noticing a ton of people lately throwing out all these big ideas on how to "improve" the forum—honestly, I can't tell if everyone is just bored out of their minds or if they're all just low-key campaigning for moderator positions.
The forum is fine exactly the way it is... honestly.

Just because something’s good doesn't mean it can't be even better—I guess. Honestly, if you aren't looking to level up, what's even the point?

No, I really don't think I am.
If someone is comfortable enough to list their gender, why wouldn't they just include their Social Security number while they're at it?
Besides, I can't imagine what kind of struggle it would be for a regular forum user to figure out a person's gender from their posts.
And look, I’m not interested in getting bogged down in a deep philosophical debate with you; this isn't some high-level political forum meant for endless arguments...
Go find someone else 🙂

When we talk about general etiquette, it covers much more ground than just gender markers. For instance, you can usually tell from the context of a post whether someone is a man or a woman....
And since birth years aren't visible, there's no reason every single user should feel forced to list them.
If you're going to argue that logic, why stop there? Why shouldn't we require Social Security numbers?
The real issue is that as our ideas evolve, how long would it take for some self-proclaimed genius to decide we need to collect even more personal data?
Adding gender labels isn't going to make this forum any better, that's for sure.....

Good grief...

Gender is necessary because there are linguistic differences between genders.

Besides, nobody is forcing you to list your gender or even provide an accurate one. It’s simply a desire for what is already in your profile to also appear alongside your posts.

All we're getting from Btino is this. You've got 30-year-olds talking nonsense and 15-year-olds actually making sense.
And I'm not buying that "not their fault" argument either. I mean, you don't exactly have a 12-year-old showing up to type stuff. If someone’s 15 and knows what's up, they're smart enough to own what they're posting and how they're saying it.

Let me see, then?
It feels like you're speaking a foreign language to me; besides, what are we supposed to do about transgender issues?
What is the goal of all this—to spice up the forum, to have people identify themselves, or whatever else comes to mind...

I honestly don't see where you're coming from... If there's just a linguistic difference between genders, what exactly is the issue?
I assume you're reading other people's posts with enough comprehension that you don't need a manual just to figure out if someone is male or female.
And apparently, clicking on a profile is just too much to ask, isn't it?

It isn't always obvious. Especially if the conversation is short and you don't know the person. I shouldn't have to list examples for you.

If you had actually followed this thread from the start, you would have seen at least two examples already. I'll say them again:

Jacob Foster11 said:🤦

Let’s look at it this way. First, there is no foolproof way to figure out someone's gender, nor is it necessary. Anyone who chooses to reveal their gender is doing so voluntarily. And people will address them accordingly, whether they are lying or not.

Second, gender settings already exist within the forum software itself.

Third, we are just talking about having the gender listed next to the name, just like the location is. Give me one good reason why you wouldn't list your gender right next to your name. Obviously, I am referring to those who voluntarily added their gender to their profile.

Fourth, just because it doesn't happen to you doesn't mean it never happens to anyone else. It happens.

Fifth, of course, this isn't some critical feature without which the forum would collapse. But it is something that would ease communication in certain situations by removing misunderstandings. To be fair, these misunderstandings aren't catastrophic. But if they can be eliminated, why not? Again, give me one solid reason why this wouldn't be a good idea. Or better yet... give me one good reason why it would be bad.

Btw, a silly example of a conversation:
- "HELP!!!!! My computer slowed down, what should I do???"
- "Did you run a scan? You might have some malware on there."
- "No, what do I need to do??? I AM A WOMAN!!!"
I honestly can't believe I have to list examples of conversations where knowing the speaker's gender is actually helpful. 🙄

Jacob Foster11 said:How can there be "no need" if misunderstandings keep happening? If people are getting confused, then there is absolutely a need for them. If misunderstandings didn't exist, then maybe they wouldn't be needed.

Here is a perfect example of a misunderstanding from a few days ago:

It’s certainly not a crime—though I suppose it isn't strictly necessary either. If I were to address you as a woman right now, what specific injury would you actually suffer from that mistake?

I've mentioned before that I don't really react when these kinds of errors are directed at me. Honestly, the only ones who seem bothered are the younger crowd, especially women, who tend to take offense and turn threads into off-topic discussions about getting to know one another. For everyone else, it's pretty much irrelevant—if someone gets confused, they'll see the gendered tone of the conversation and just correct themselves.

Besides, that sort of thing doesn't really fit the spirit of communicating on an online forum. The whole concept of identity on the internet is arguably too complex for such a small technical gesture to be seen as anything more than a way to signal flirtatiousness. In reality, it's just prioritizing practicality over complexity (there was a witty post once about the nuance of gender identity, but I think it was deleted—probably dismissed as off-topic trolling, since with these types of questions, technology usually exists to bypass any "philosophy").

Would clearer labels mean we have to pay closer attention to who is who? Maybe. Perhaps those who focus more on the content than the author might find themselves getting tripped up.
