What Steve Vai says about Robert Fripp:

I gotta tell you guys a bit about how much Robert Fripp has actually influenced my life. Growing up, I heard people talking about this guy constantly, but I didn't really get into his stuff until I picked up “Exposure” when I was around 18. Man, that record hit me hard. It was unlike anything else out there at the time. It felt like I was listening to a real-deal musician using the guitar as a legit tool to craft actual art.

His sound was just... different. It was super clear to me that while he could play basically anything on that instrument, the guitar wasn't his only focus. He was building these entire soundscapes and atmospheres that sounded like nothing else on the planet. It had this aggressive bite to it, but then it would pivot and become incredibly beautiful. You could tell he was just doing EXACTLY what he wanted—playing what was in his head without giving a damn about whatever genre or trend was hot at the moment. To me, that is the absolute definition of musical integrity. Seeing that inspired me so much; it gave me the guts to decide right then that I’d stick to my own guns with my own ideas too. And then, once I finally checked out King Crimson... yeah, game over.

If you sit down and think about the absolute coolest band sitting in your collection right now, for a ton of people, that’s always been King Crimson since the 70s. It’s almost impossible to put a number on the impact this band (Robert's Vision) has had on modern rock players. Honestly, we wouldn't even have bands like Tool, Dream Theater, Mudvayne, Rush and sol many others including Steve Vai The way you know Him. There ara treasures Beyond measure in Robert's catalog and i sincerely suggest you go hunt down those gems. There ara not many musicians i consider a true genius of The art and He is One of them. His musical instinct is just raw and honest, no excuses. We can only dream of bringing that kind of truth to our own work. Look, G3 is all about celebrating everything the guitar can be, and it’s gonna stay that way, whether I'm there or not. Personally, I think Robert is doing with his Soundscapes is cathartic Divinity. It’s all about patience and knowing when to hold back. If you catch a G3 show where Robert is performing, my advice is to just clear your head. Drop your expectations and let the beauty of this guy's sonic textures just wash over you. Joe Satriani and i will fill The Air with All The violent Mongolian string abuse you Can possibly Handl for One evening.

Oh, and heads up—if you start digging through Robert's discography just to hear him shred, you might realize the guy could absolutely destroy Joe Satriani and me if he felt like it 😁. Robert is a total class act, a wonderful human being, and we've all hit it off so well on this tour. Joe Satriani and i Feel a reverent honor in having Him with US.
