Angel Heart

I revisited this film a few days ago, and it was a stark reminder of just how much of a masterpiece it truly is. The atmosphere is absolutely electric, perfectly complemented by the score. It’s refreshing to see a movie pull off something this gripping and immersive without leaning on a bunch of flashy special effects.

For anyone who hasn't sat through it yet, we're looking at a 1987 classic starring De Niro and Rourke, directed by Alan Parker. It’s one of those rare thrillers where I actually struggled to pinpoint the main plot before hitting the halfway mark.

I’d love to shower it with even more praise here, but I don't want to spoil the experience for the younger crowd who hasn't seen it. All things considered, it comes with my strongest recommendation—even if you've already seen it once.

Man, this movie is seriously good. I remember catching it in theaters when it first dropped, and then rewatching it a bunch of times on TV later—it just holds up. Honestly, even today, whenever I'm sitting there eating hard-boiled eggs, my mind immediately jumps back to that scene where Robert De Niro is having breakfast, picks up an egg, and goes, "You know, in many cultures, the egg represents the soul," before taking a massive bite out of it...

I really love it, though. Now I actually need to try and find a way to download it off Napster.

Yeah, I actually grabbed that from Napster last week. The DivX quality is excellent, though it does have some hardcoded Subtitles.com baked in. Doesn't really matter, though; both the movie and the footage are top-tier. If you happen to run into any trouble finding it, just let me know and I'll share it.

Man, I tried looking, and I did stumble onto a copy, but it looks like it'll take me like a whole week to finish the download. I gotta keep digging for a bit... I'll find it eventually! Thanks though, but I'm gonna try to hunt it down myself first so I don't hog all your bandwidth for days on end. And hey, the subtitles don't even bother me. As long as the audio isn't out of sync, I'm golden.

I was blown away. Honestly, this movie is to horror what Blade Runner is to SF. I’ve been wanting to catch this for ages but never really had the chance. Well, that's one more thing checked off the list. One less mystery to deal with. To-do list. Always something. It’s like trying to bail out the ocean with a cocktail napkin—you make a dent for a second, then reality hits you right in the face. Just one more task after another, circling around like a shark that forgot why it was hungry in the first place. Life doesn't stop just because your inbox is full. I don't know what you're looking for. You just dropped a single word and walked away. If you've got a list you want me to look at, or if you're trying to start a debate about some Top Ten rankings, just lay it out. I'm sitting here, but I can't read your mind. Give me something to work with. 😁

I had this feeling like Mickey was just playing himself again, honestly. It felt like he was recycling that same old persona from his role in... Barfly. A classic. It’s got that gritty, lived-in feeling you just don't see much anymore. It’s like looking at a faded Polaroid of a dive bar in New Orleans—you can almost smell the stale beer and regret through the screen. It’s very Bukowski. That raw, unpolished way of looking at life where everything is a bit broken, but somehow still works. There’s no gloss here, no Hollywood sheen. Just people existing in the margins. It’s honest, in its own messy way.It feels like I’m watching some Bukowski movie where he just wanders through dive bars trying to untangle a case...

Killer movie. Rourke is the man 👍

Yeah, I caught this one years ago and just rewatched it yesterday. Honestly, it’s such a masterpiece. I remember the first time I saw it, it hit me harder than almost anything else I've ever watched—the only real exception being The Sixth Sense. In my humble opinion, this is the one movie where Rourke absolutely crushed his performance. And De Niro? He is perfection as Lou Cypher. A total five-star experience! 👍 p.s. Does anyone know if they have this on DVD at the local video rental places?

Film 👍 1989/90. I caught this in a theater back then. Since then? Probably watched it about fifteen times and I could still sit through it again right now. Absolute masterpiece.😈

Truly impressive... you’ve got the atmosphere, the acting, and then that whole sequence with the elevator... it’s just masterfully done. You even pick up a new bit of vocabulary along the way; epiphany.
I am simply at a loss, however—how on earth could a film this good remain such an obscure little gem?

It’s a decent flick, I guess, though since I’m from a newer generation, I’m only just getting around to seeing it. Honestly, I’d seen similar twists in other movies before, so when the big reveal finally hit, I wasn't even really shocked or anything—just kind of expected it. It’s a good movie overall, but man, it felt a little long-winded toward the end... still, I suppose it’s worth pushing through just to see how it all wraps up.

Oh, and one more thing—when Rourke gets back to his hotel room and we see the scene with the dead Epiphany lying there on the bed, I couldn't help but notice she hadn't shaved her armpits. 😁 Which is kinda wild considering Rourke was sleeping with her the night before, right? Just super awkward. 🤣

Anyway, Rourke is such a badass. I really dig his look in this one—the spit-curl hair and that whole vibe he had going on.
