Blade Runner vs. Dark City: Which one is better?

Honestly, the movie totally caught me off guard in the best way possible. Sure, there are a few hiccups in the plot here and there, but all in all, it’s a super engaging watch that I’d definitely say is worth your time.

What an absolute masterpiece of a film! It’s pure sci-fi noir through and through, though I’d argue it weaves in threads from several other genres just to keep you on your toes. The setting is everything—this gritty, suffocating future that feels so heavy, much like the atmosphere you get in movies like Brazil, Delicatessen, or Blade Runner. The plot itself? Truly gripping. You have this guy waking up next to a dead prostitute with absolutely no memory of who he is, only to receive a mysterious phone call from someone claiming they have all the "explanations" he needs. It’s brilliant, isn't it?
Sure, the lead actor, Rufus Sewell, might not be a household name just yet, but honestly, does that even matter when you look at the sheer powerhouse lineup they assembled for the guest spots? I mean, seriously, how can you not be floored when you see heavyweights like John Hurt, Jennifer Connelly, and Kiefer Sutherland popping up in different episodes? It’s almost absurd! Who needs a massive superstar in the main role when you have that kind of prestige rotating through the guest cast?
I have to admit, the ending felt a little bit off—sort of left me scratching my head, if I'm being completely honest—but even so, I’d still give this a glowing recommendation!

Really interesting take on where things are headed. The plot actually holds my attention.
That track by Sway that Jennifer Connelly sings at the start? Absolute perfection.

Brilliant movie. When I borrowed it, I had zero expectations—I didn't even know what I was getting into. It completely blew me away.
The downside is that I watched it a month before seeing The Matrix, so The Matrix lost that massive impact it usually has on people...

The film is excellent. Is the theme worth a 5? Perhaps. The execution isn't bad either, and the characters feel quite original—almost as if they stepped right out of a classic noir thriller.

An absolutely stellar film. It’s got this incredibly moving story that feels almost too on the nose, serving as a sort of symbolic mirror to the "reality" we're living in today. I guess you could say it's practically a precursor to The Matrix.

The acting is top-tier, and the direction? Honestly, just brilliant.

It’s one of those movies that leaves you wondering why it didn't blow up more. The vibe is incredible—that cyberpunk noir aesthetic is so heavy I’d probably need sunglasses just to sit through it, 👍 but then again... there are stretches where it looks straight out of an animated comic book. 🙄

This is an absolute classic—it stands perfectly well on its own, and frankly, it should stay that way. 😉

Even if you set the plot aside, I think Gotham City is absolutely incredible just because of the atmosphere and those visuals.

Alex Proyas is one of those directors whose visual style just clicks with me, regardless of whether the movie itself is a hit—like how he handled the pretty mediocre 'I, Robot' recently.

He’s definitely up there with guys like David Fincher, Ridley Scott, and David Lynch...

I watched this the other day, and honestly, I'd never even heard of it until then. I actually missed the ending due to some private matters I won't get into right now.

Anyway, I agree with Officer 663—Brazil immediately came to mind as a comparison, especially regarding the production design; it’s a vision of the future that avoids all those tired futuristic clichés. While Blade Runner feels like a Western dressed up as sci-fi, this is, in my opinion, pure sci-fi noir. Even the plot... it draws from The Big Sleep, Angel Heart, and plenty of others.
Since I missed the finale, I'd appreciate any info if anyone's willing to share.

Rufus Sewell is a fantastic actor and, for me, perfect leading man material. And a round of applause for Sutherland—his performance was totally over the top and delightfully hammy.
