Paintballing!

Honestly, we’ve already gone down this rabbit hole once before, haven't we?

It isn't even a sport, if you really think about it, it has absolutely nothing to do with athletics at all, it's just a massive war simulation designed for people to vent their frustrations, and honestly, it's probably better for everyone if they just blow off steam there instead of taking it out on the streets of downtown Chicago.😁

So, if you're into it, go ahead and enjoy yourself.

Are things like shooting, boxing, or just combat sports in general actually considered "sports," or are they... something else entirely?

I'm trying to wrap my head around where the line is drawn... what's the actual difference there?

The defining feature of any sport is competition. While physical activity is certainly required, without that competitive element, you’re really just looking at recreation or the pursuit of a skill.

I mean, seriously, tell me this—if we're calling paintball a sport, does that mean war is just a sport too? You could probably just slap it under the extreme sports category if you really wanted to get weird with it.

Alright, fine—I don't know if paintball is "officially" a sport... probably not yet... and that's not really the point. The fact is, your whole body aches after you're done. For me, it's a damn sport because I'm getting in shape and burning calories, plus it’s actually fun, unlike hitting the gym, playing tennis, or swimming...

That point has been brought up more times than I can count. If you just take a second to scroll back through some of the older threads on this subforum, you'll see plenty of people saying the exact same thing 👋

I used to play back a few years ago, over in Chicago. It was pretty great. I guess we could probably pull a crew together for some local tournaments. 🙂

Since I'm based right around the Austin-Dallas corridor, I'm down for matches in those cities.

Yeah, if someone catches you in the chest from a few feet away, it feels like you just grew another skin tag.

You’ve gotta have some serious cardio if you’re out there tearing through the woods or whatever.

Pure adrenaline. You’re basically playing war—half tactical thinking, half just spraying bullets everywhere.
Grabbed a beer—kind of feels like I'm playing war games or something—now it's just shower time and collapsing into some towels. Exhausted.

No, seriously... I saw this segment on ESPN about paintball played in some enclosed arena with referees and obstacle courses where you just scramble to grab flags, and the whole round lasts two minutes! Two minutes!

What Jesse Ortiz4 is talking about sounds way better... crouching in the brush, climbing trees, running around, taking people out—now that's real...

So, here’s the deal...

Think of Paintball as a legitimate competitive sport—it’s officially recognized out here in the States just like it is back home. It’s basically team vs. team, where the goal is to capture the flag. You aren't running around in full camo gear; you wear jerseys pretty similar to what you'd see in any other athletic league, and there are actual refs on hand to make sure everyone plays fair. A round usually lasts about five minutes, and that’s it. Oh, and by the way, they use a "cage"—basically a big safety net around the field—so spectators don't end up getting hit.

Then there’s the other way to do it, which people call rec-ball. That’s when you just grab your buddies, head out into the woods, and let loose. Personally, I prefer this version. For one thing, you’re out in nature, it’s a bit less intense than the tournament stuff, and you can always grab some beers and fire up the grill afterward.

At the end of the day, no matter how you play it, Paintball is an incredibly team-oriented game. You really have to put in some time playing together to get in sync with your crew. Trust me on this—it’s super addictive, and it’s definitely about more than just mindless shooting.

Lately, it hasn't even been that expensive. Honestly, it costs me less than a typical night out hitting a bar or playing a few rounds of pool with the guys...😉 specifically if we're talking $33 for a solid 2 or 3 hours of playtime.

So I headed out to the woods just to blow off some steam and get some paintball in. 😉
