Edward Robinson6 said:Look, Andrew Martinez11, let’s get one thing straight—it’s all subjective. How much you vibe with a band is entirely up to you. Personally? I’d take the person who only knows a handful of songs but actually feels them deeply over those posers who act like they're writing a dissertation the second you ask what they listen to. You know the type—you ask a simple question and suddenly they're pulling out a notepad to lecture you on everything they "prefer." It always reminds me of this one kid back in high school who used to watch Blink-182 videos and just laugh at how much they leaned into that whole B-boy aesthetic—and then some hardcore punk elitist walks up, crosses his arms, and starts preaching. "Oh, you like them? That's so commercial. Did you hear this underground track from 1984? No? Then you don't know anything." It's exhausting.

Look, that was your first post, so watch yourself—you’re acting like everything is some massive disaster. And that whole interrogation routine? Give me a break, you sound like you're running a police precinct here. Those kids probably think you're some total weirdo, and honestly, they're likely laughing behind your back when you walk by. But hey, what if they actually listened to the last album and told you their favorite track? You’d probably just scoff and go, "Oh, really? Ever heard of this band or that one?" And when they say no, you'd be like, "Aha! Then how can you possibly claim this system is anything at all if you haven't even heard them?" Seriously, Andrew Martinez11, you are truly disturbed.
But honestly? That kind of thing is just totally IN right now.

Look, like I said—you don't even know me, so don't go trying to judge me...
Look, I am NOT questioning ANYONE about their music taste—ABSOLUTELY NOBODY... because, frankly, I don't give a damn who knows what or how much they think they know.
Alright, let me tell you a little story—and honestly, this isn't just a one-off thing either. It’s happened to me at least six times now, and I’m not even exaggerating...

Every single Saturday, I find myself heading out to Point—which, let's be honest, is pretty much the only actual rock club left in Cleveland—and I'm always hanging out with the DJ. Sometimes I even step in to help pick the tracks myself. It’s not about being a control freak or anything, it's just... necessary, you know? If you want the night to actually have a flow and tell a story, you can't just leave everything to chance.
So, the DJ and I decided to switch things up today and throw on "Forest" by System of a Down—you know, that track from the Toxicity album that’s sitting just one song away from "Chop Suey!"—just because "Chop Suey!" is playing on loop constantly around here.
So, we’re playing this track, right? And then this kid wanders up to me—just some little guy—begging me, "Hey, can you play anything by System of a Down? Since they haven't really made it big here yet..." I have to laugh. I calmly explain to him that what the US is listening to right now *is* actually System of a Down—and he just gives me that exact look I described in my very first post. Like, seriously? Does he think they only released Chop Suey?!
I’m done saying a single word to him about it—seriously, I'm finished. I'm not even going to bother asking how he's doing, just like you suggested, because honestly? It wouldn't make a damn bit of difference to me whether the kid knows what's up or not. It just doesn't matter.

So then we just blast "Ratamahatta" by Sepultura—because honestly, what else are you gonna do? It’s like that moment when you’re looking at your kids in a total state of euphoria and you gotta ask... would they actually be able to handle "Ratamahatta" by Sepultura?
And then you just wouldn't believe anything anymore... honestly.
We didn't exactly say anything to him... but then again...

When my girl starts asking for literally ANYTHING from Incubus right in the middle of "Certain Shade of Green"... yeah, that's where I draw the line. That’s officially enough.

Look, this is my fourth time posting about this exact thing—are you actually listening, or are we just talking past each other here? Because it feels like you still haven't grasped the point I'm trying to make... seriously.
Look, I honestly don't give a damn how much someone claims to know about music, a specific band, a track, or some legendary album... but if their entire knowledge base boils down to just ONE single f***ing song? Then they can't possibly call that group their favorite band. Period.
Look, if you actually want to be the BEST at something—and I mean really, truly excel—you can't just wing it. You have to actually know what you're talking about. It’s that simple. How can you expect to master anything if you haven't even bothered to learn the basics? You need knowledge. Period.
Look, if you actually care about a band, you care about what they stand for—the message, the vibe, the whole damn identity behind the music. It’s deeper than just noise. But you? I'm guessing you just listen to stuff so there's some background chatter to drown out the silence... right?

Look, you just CANNOT claim System of a Down is your favorite band if you’re standing there supporting the war in Iraq—it's a total contradiction. I mean, seriously? They are such fierce, unapologetic opponents of that whole conflict... how can you even listen to their message and side with the war at the same time? It just doesn't add up.
Look, if you’re actually pro-war, then there is absolutely no way you can claim to be a fan of their politics—I mean, come on, how does that even work? Every single song they write is a direct strike against war and violence! You can't really have it both ways, right?
Look, if you want a band to actually be the "best" in your eyes, you’ve gotta genuinely vibe with what they stand for... and that's a tall order if you can't get behind their core message. How can you really connect with the music when you're fundamentally at odds with their whole philosophy? It just doesn't work like that—you have to believe in the soul of it, right?

And regarding that whole thing where you claim you’d rather hang out with someone who only knows one single song and thinks they’re some huge fan, instead of someone who actually understands the message behind the music... look, buddy—logic just isn't exactly your strong suit, is it?

GUYS, SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME EXPLAIN THIS... THIS SHALLOW WRECK DOESN'T UNDERSTAND A SINGLE THING!!!!!

Gary Lee53 said:That isn't your actual name—it's just a handle. And honestly, why on earth would I capitalize it for you when you went out of your way to write it all in lowercase yourself? Seriously... 😲 👎 🙂

That was strictly aimed at HIM... because he's clearly getting worked up about it...🙂

And besides, I can type it however I want—lowercase if I feel like it.

Look, let's skip the whole debate over who's shallow or who's got the better logic here. I caught onto exactly what you're pushing from the jump, and yeah, I still don't buy it.

😁 And seriously? Did you actually think I believed you were out there walking around with a notebook interrogating kids about their playlists? That sounds more like how your brain works, honestly.

And sure, someone might think System of a Down is the greatest band ever without knowing a single thing about the politics surrounding Iraq... and there are plenty of bands out there with zero political ties, so what's their deal?
I guess I could argue that the kid in your post isn't even a great example, since he doesn't even mention that the band you're obsessed with is his favorite... but whatever.
If I recall, you were also talking about those kids acting tough, thinking they're such big shots just because they're wearing a band tee when they haven't even heard five songs.
Ha! It's the same kind of idiot—the guy who thinks he's cool because he listens to a band and has actually heard their entire discography. For those types of morons, how much they listen doesn't even matter.
But after God knows how many of my posts, you still don't get what I'm trying to say.
too bad

If I recall correctly, you also mentioned those kids who act all tough, thinking they're the coolest people in the room just because they're wearing a band shirt when they haven't even heard five songs by them.
Haha, well, it’s the exact same kind of idiot—the guy who thinks he's a legend because he listens to a band and has actually listened to their entire discography. With those types of morons, "listening" doesn't mean anything.

I don't even want to fight anymore... you aren't making sense to me, I'm not making sense to you, and that's just that. 😉

I'm calling a truce, and honestly, thanks—it's been a long time since anyone has gotten under my skin quite this much. 😁 😉

Do you live in Cleveland?
Let me know if you ever find yourself down in Miami... I'll have a beer waiting for you.

I didn't quite catch that part...

I've actually been living in Phoenix for the last few years, but yeah, I'm originally from Cleveland.
No worries at all, I'll give you a shout whenever I head down to Miami 😉

Small town life... man... (I've lived here since I was born, but honestly? I can't stand the people here. It's just a bunch of folks acting like their dads are some big-shot CEOs or local legends while they blow through inherited money—and don't even get me started on how clueless they are about anything else...)

So yeah, I'm a small-town girl through and through... but boy... 👎 🙂

I am a local through and through... but man... oh boy... 👎 🙂

In the four-plus years I've lived here, I've only met two decent people from Cleveland. One is 33 and a total music geek just like me, and the other is a bit of a misfit, similar to my own vibe 😉

Everyone else seems incredibly stuck-up, and honestly, I'm not exactly at the age where I'm looking to go out and make a bunch of new friends anyway... 😉

Since I was sixteen, my taste in music hasn't really changed much, and I still listen to almost everything. My playlist includes The Doors, Rolling Stones, Rainbow, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Skid Row, and Guns N' Roses... and more.

I completely blanked on the Smashing Pumpkins! I feel terrible about that!

If I recall correctly, "Siamese Dream" came out right around then. What an absolute masterpiece of an album...

Well, look at that—Nicole Lee43 just checked off basically every essential band. She's definitely my kind of person. 😁

Man, I remember back when I was just a sixteen-year-old kid—everything felt so much bigger then, didn't it?
Man, I've gotta admit—it really felt like there wasn't a single girl out there who could ever love me.
It just keeps going... nina nina nana...
