Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

I honestly find it hard to believe that nobody has started a thread about Potter yet! 😉

Or maybe it’s already been done and I just somehow missed it 😁

Regardless, I finally sat down and watched it yesterday.

Here are my thoughts: visually speaking, the film is absolutely flawless, but personally, I found the pacing a bit sluggish and perhaps a touch too fantastical. It felt as though they leaned a little too heavily on certain plot resolutions. It reminded me of how Bond always seems to find a way out of every impossible situation—it’s almost too convenient how he’s always untouchable. That said, even with those gripes, the story remains somewhat digestible as a whole. If I were ten years younger, I suspect I would have absolutely loved it. But at my age? I don't know, I think I preferred the first installment much more...

So, what are your thoughts on it??? 😁

I honestly can't stand book adaptations—especially when it comes to HP—and even though I know I’m looking at two and a half hours of pure, unadulterated boredom, I've decided to tag along with my classmates just so I have something to do. I'm just praying we don't end up stuck with terrible seats 🙂

Personally, I found the second installment way more fun than the first.
Beyond the visuals being absolutely wild, I actually enjoyed having two villains to root against: Snape and Malfoy senior. Some friends who've already read the book told me both of them will get much more screen time in the third part. And honestly? Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy is spot on. He totally nailed it. 😁

A few friends were raving about Dobby, calling him some kind of massive achievement for CGI... Ugh, please. If they wanted me to think he was actually impressive, he’d have to look a lot less fake. It would've been better if they just hired a little person to play him... 😁

Look, I get it, but when you bundle all those tropes together into one narrative, the whole thing starts to feel rather pathetic—transparent, even, and just incredibly predictable...

It's almost as if you're some high-end CGI specialist looking at the frame rate and spotting every tiny imperfection in the animation. 😛 You managed to fully immerse yourself in every other aspect of the film, yet you can't connect with him? Come on now, pull yourself together, please! 😁

It’s like you’re some kind of high-end graphics processor or something... if only we could see all those tiny little imperfections in his animation that most people just breeze right over... 😛 You managed to get totally into everything else, but when it comes to him... you just aren't feeling it at all. Maybe they couldn't have done it any better, but then again, what I said is just my own take on things... It’s all subjective. To me, a trick only feels truly brilliant when it looks "real"... But Dobby is just so obviously artificial that it's a bit much... 🙂

In my opinion, Harry Potter is way better than TWO TOWERS...

I've read all the books, and honestly, Prisoner of Azkaban is leagues ahead of Chamber of Secrets, though I'd say Goblet of Fire is right up there with Prisoner of Azkaban...

It’s really only in the third book where we start to see that Harry doesn't necessarily have these god-like superpowers, but he knows how to use the skills he actually has in the best possible way. That being said, Chamber of Secrets is still a solid movie—he can speak Parseltongue, which lets him hear that voice echoing through the halls (it's the voice of a young Riddle, which was actually a bit of magic gifted to Harry subconsciously during Voldemort's attempt on his life). Young Riddle speaks the language of the Basilisk, that ancient creature, to command it to kill. That’s just how it works according to the book. One of the main reasons I think Harry Potter is executed better than Lord of the Rings is simply because Harry Potter follows the source material so much more faithfully than LOTR does...

CANT WAIT FOR ANOTHER BOOK OR MOVIE...

When Rowling sold off the film rights, one of her non-negotiable terms was that the books remained untouched—no changes to the plot and absolutely nothing added to the story.
In my opinion, you can't even put LOTR and HP in the same conversation. Their only real similarities are that they both consist of multiple installments, were released around the same time, and involve fantasy elements. That’s it.
Anyway, I haven't actually sat down to watch the second movie yet, though I plan to. 🙂 Having read the books, I agree that "Prisoner of Azkaban" is the best one—I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing how they handle it on screen.

It isn’t even just about Rickman being great, it’s about Snape himself!!! He’s such a dark, incredibly cool figure... honestly, he’s just legendary...🙏 😁

I don't know... personally, I don't see it that way. There's something almost artificial about him. I can't quite tell if it's a result of the acting or just the way the character was written, but he feels a bit like a cartoon villain—just perpetually angry and wicked, only to be defeated by everyone at the end while he just stands there going "Damn!" 😁 Regardless, he really resonated with me; you can disagree all you want, but I'm standing my ground on this one! 🙂

And Dobby is so obviously fake that it's painful.

The guy playing Malfoy's dad has such a look, my friend and I couldn't stop staring at him! Honestly, I'm floored—words fail me—he's just... a presence!

I'm also with you on Dobby being total garbage; you can tell he's just some computer-generated mess, there's zero realism there. It's like trying to convince someone that Roger Rabbit is an actual rabbit, 🙄

Otherwise, the movie is a complete joke in terms of how stupid it is. Good grief...

I actually just watched it about a week ago.
Personally, I thought it was totally awesome... let me explain... whenever I sit down for movies like this, I basically switch into this total kid mode where everything is just suuuuppppeeerrrr fun for me.... plus, I end up jumping and freaking out at every single scary scene.... which honestly makes my partner feel pretty awkward because I'm making noises that definitely aren't age-appropriate.

I also felt like this second installment was better than the first one (Jason Isaacs is just pure evil, and Alan Rickman is a straight-up genius regardless—not to mention Snape is pretty hot, if you ask me—plus Kenneth Branagh is great, though he doesn't get nearly enough screen time compared to what's in the book). It felt much darker to me than the first movie.

But this guy I know (who hasn't even read the books) keeps insisting that this second part is worse and that the plot drags on forever at the start before rushing through the ending. To be fair, he kind of has a point; if you've actually read the book, following the story is a breeze, but for everyone else, it might be a little harder to keep up.🙂

I haven't actually read the books, and honestly, they aren't really my thing.
You hit the nail on the head, slylynx8! Some people just don't know how to switch into "adult mode," so everything feels boring to them. (ruggedjackal46, give it a rest!)
The movie is actually great if you're okay with a bit of childish fun. 😁

And Charles Sanchez6 clearly hasn't a clue. He thinks Isaacs is mediocre, yet he calls Dobby a genius—not only does the character have eyes the size of marbles, but they look so glassy and weird... Ugh. Total amateurs. 🙄🙂

How does anyone manage to make such a mediocre film? And don't even get me started on the guy playing Harry; how can he be so unlikable and just plain bad at his job? And Snape is a total legend. Honestly, the only reason I even sat through the first one was because I'm such a huge fan of Rickman... I watched the second one too, and actually found the second one pretty entertaining. 😁
I mean, whoever doesn't love Dobby? All in all, the movie is perfect for a goofball like me... 😁

I hadn't heard of Jason Isaacs before that, but I immediately downloaded Patriot online right after because my friends told me he's an even bigger jerk in that one, and they weren't lying. The movie itself is trash, but he's definitely worth watching. 😁

Ron is the absolute GOAT. I was honestly cracking up watching how terrified he gets the second he spots any kind of spider 😁

And can we talk about how much of a massive role a Snape plays in the book, yet they barely give him anything to do in the movie? It’s ridiculous. A friend and I actually decided to go see the third installment specifically because we heard Snape and Malfoy would have a bigger part in it 👍

I wasn't really planning on buying the DVDs, but since everyone else is, I felt like I had to just to keep up once they drop, so I ended up grabbing the first one already...
Can you believe how annoying it is? They have these extra deleted scenes featuring Snape, but you can only see them if you beat certain video games... For example, you have to know exactly which bricks Hagrid hit with his umbrella to make that wall open up, or those scenes with Snape's potions... ugh, gross. I don't think I'll ever actually see those clips, and the only friend of mine who managed to unlock them completely forgot what the answers were... Looks like I'll have to rewatch the movie again, maybe take some actual notes while I do it... 😁
