When is James Cameron filming his next movie?

I'll kick things off...

When is Cameron actually gonna drop a new movie??? I mean, sure, he’s always been one of those slower directors—usually taking like 2-3 years per flick—but that was always just because he loves dragging out production. This current situation is different and totally unacceptable. The guy hasn't even STARTED working on a single film in 5 years. A full FIVE years! One day he's claiming he's slammed with other projects, the next he's making documentaries or producing TV shows, but I want a full-length feature!!! First, it looked like he might shoot Spider-Man (not that I thought that was a great idea anyway), then True Lies 2 (which he recently confirmed once and for all isn't happening—whatever, maybe better not to waste time on sequels), and as for Avatar, I doubt it'll ever get its act together with a real script.... then lately there was talk about him buying rights to various anime series.... Battle Angel Alita was mentioned, but again, nothing. Knowing how long it takes him to shoot something, even if he announces he has a finished script TOMORROW, we won't see a movie in theaters before Christmas 2025 at the EARLIEST. His last move is talking up in interviews about developing new tech for his next films... give me a break... just a bunch of fluff, man, just FILM something!!! grrrrr !!!

I have been waiting for quite some time now for something new from the duo behind Se7en: David Fincher & Andrew Kevin Walker.

Since watching Se7en, I haven't encountered a film that has truly impressed me to that degree... 😢

Maybe it'll be Rendezvous with Rama (2004), or who knows, maybe even something else...

"I wanted to tell you is that a trusting source of the Rama production told me that Fincher will AT least direct another movie after Panic room before directing Rama. This will probably be They Fought Alone with Brad Pitt. Besides he's developing The Michael Bay producing Stay and Squids."

First off, it isn't anima, it's anime.

As for "Alita," I honestly don't think there's a God in this universe capable of making a decent feature film based on Alita.

The Japanese already made an anime that was an hour and a half long, and it sucked because they tried to base the whole thing on just the first two volumes of the manga—which I think is only two out of about nine. It would be like if Jackson decided to make the LOTR film based strictly on "Fellowship of The ring - Book i".

Regarding Cameron, I think Johnny hit the nail on the head... when you have that kind of money, you can afford to focus on other things in life.

Melissa Moore32, nice of you to nitpick my spelling. Honestly, I gotta thank you though, because if you hadn't called me out, I would've gone to my grave thinking I wrote anime instead of anima... yeah, people mess up, whether it's typos or just brain farts.
Anyway, looks like you're a total anime fanatic, hit me with some recs (movies, NOT series) so I can grab them online... (already seen Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and a good chunk of Miyazaki's stuff) thanks.

Also, you're probably right about how they couldn't film Battle Angel Alita... got any ideas on what other anime material Cameron might actually take on? (thinking about starting a petition and organizing a protest outside Lightstorm Entertainment headquarters...)

Until recently, I hadn't seen Blue Velvet (I haven't had the chance, even though I'm a total Lynch fanatic). I was going crazy wanting to watch that movie. I searched, and searched... but it’s not even available at my local film archive. I just keep hoping they'll air Blue Velvet on ABC one day.

The film didn't blow me away. It has all those classic Lynch hallmarks (not that I'm going to list them), but it just didn't hit the mark for me.

Honestly, I am dying to see certain films. I find myself scrolling through IMDb almost every single day, which only makes the situation worse. I've discovered so many movies I want to see that I can't even sleep. I fantasize about sitting in a movie theater all day long, just watching film after film. Whatever I want, just playing...

Whoa... so you've watched Miyazaki... which means you know what quality looks like. Speaking of him, have you seen "Porco Rosso"? It's a great little flick set in the Mediterranean.

Since you've seen Ghost in the Shell and Akira, you still have... from the newer stuff... "Princess Mononoke" and definitely "Metropolis." Hmm... maybe "Perfect Blue" too (that one is somewhat similar to Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut").

Then there's "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" or "Wings of Honneamise."

"Ninja Scroll" is solid. One of the best for that kind of vibe.

Or like, "Grave of the Fireflies" [Ghibli].

That’s basically the extent of what I'm familiar with, but believe me, that's a tiny list. If I stumble upon anything else good, I'll let you know.

Now, look... to save you the hassle of downloading everything from the web, I have most of what I mentioned right here, so we could do a trade or something. You give me the anime, I give you some blank CDs. (Don't worry, us anime fans rarely pay full price for anything. We usually just settle for burgers and fries).

I put them in an attachment list, so take a look at whatever catches your eye.

BTW, whatever you do, don't skip the series... there are a few almost cult classics that are absolute must-watches.

As for turning anime into movies, I think nobody should even attempt it, not even Cameron. Honestly, that's something only the Japanese can pull off. Why? Because it's their art form... the rest of the world can understand it, admire it, spit on it, whatever, but I really don't think anyone in the West can make a decent movie based on an anime. The brains of Western producers and directors just function differently.

There's also the fact that translating a cult anime masterpiece into a film would require a massive, massive amount of cash. That means the movie would need to kill it at the box office, but we all know what kinds of movies actually make the big bucks in Hollywood these days.

Plus, anime aren't just your standard cartoons like Disney or DreamWorks. They cover way more diverse themes intended for an older audience, and the characterization is much deeper and more realistic. The problem is that certain things would seem pretty "naive" in a live-action movie, especially when Americans do it, whereas they work fine in animation because it's animated.

And don't even get me started on casting the actors for the roles.

Something that *could* work as a movie might be Ghost in the Shell. Toward the end, The Matrix was basically built on that.

Princess Mononoke could potentially work too, but things like Akira, Metropolis, and so on... there's no way in hell they could be done as well as a movie. And don't even get me started on the series.

So, ten years after Titanic, Cameron is finally getting moving on that massive SF-spektakl, "Avatar." Word is he’s been sitting on these ideas for eight years—basically just waiting for visual tech to actually catch up to his brain. The plot follows this young marine who somehow ends\\--and I mean *somehow*\\--ends up lost in space on some totally alien planet...
Looks like we might see it by 2009.

Honestly, I'd give him all credit for the Terminator films and Alien—not to mention Abyss and True Lies (which, in my humble opinion, is one of the best action comedies ever made)—but after Titanic, someone really should have staged an intervention and tied him to a chair. 😳

btw, IMDb says that J. C. is actually juggling three different projects right now—one based on a comic book, one inspired by true events, and then one from his own original script...

Back to the point, this thread is ancient. Luckily, things have moved on since then. Miraculously, the absolute best option I mentioned in my first post is already filming—Avatar. Still, we're looking at summer 2009 before we actually get to see it. Battle Angel Alita is in pre-production, and word is they'll shoot it back-to-back with Avatar once they wrap this one. So, we might see that in theaters by 2010. As for everything else, it's all up in the air; who knows if Cameron will even touch those projects...

Nah... something else was going on here, nothing to do with Jack or me... though I guess I might have given Xavi the wrong impression (now that I'm reading this after maybe 8 hours of sleep), but I don't *gasp* hate Cameron at all. Actually, I kind of enjoy his megalomania. I grew up watching his stuff, so it would be like someone forcing me to hate my left hand just because it isn't as coordinated as my right. 😁 Oh yeah, I'm also part of that 1% who doesn't hate Titanic. 😳 Honestly, Cameron is one of those rare guys who hasn't made a bad movie—well, if you don't count the first one, but those are just growing pains. So this isn't really a topic where I'd need to clash with Jack, since as far as I recall, he likes them too...

Avatar looks interesting and I'm sure Cameron will make every cent worth seeing on the big screen, but honestly, I'm more curious about Alita—mostly because I read the manga and it feels like the perfect project for him. A love story in an unloving setting with a really cool female lead... basically: drama + sci-fi + a woman with guts + action = Cameron.
