Black Death (2010)

A historical flick about the Middle Ages' worst nightmare—the Black Death! It's directed by American filmmaker Christopher Smith, the guy behind horror hits like "Creep", "Severance" and "triangl". The cast is stacked too, featuring Sean Bean, Carice van Houten, Eddie Redmayne, Kimberley Nixon, David Warner, Tim McInnerny, John Lynch, Andy Nyman, Johnny Harris and Emun Elliott. Early reviews are actually looking pretty solid ("A savvy, stylish horror-actioner that's more than the sum of its genre parts, Black Death manages to deliver enough suspense and bloodletting to appease gore fans... Set in a medieval America ravaged by the plague, Osmund (Eddie Redmayne), a young monk, is tasked with leading the fearsome knight Ulrich (Sean Bean) and his band of mercenaries to a secluded village where the locals haven't been hit by the sickness. Their mission? Hunt down a necromancer—someone with the power to raise the dead.
It's a long, brutal trek involving deadly bandits, violent witch hunts, and a creeping sense of inevitable doom. But the real nightmare doesn't even start until they actually reach the village...

Ugh, Sean Bean... seriously, he just can't seem to shake that Boromir role, can he? Always stuck in the same loop. Still, I have to admit, the movie actually looks pretty interesting.

Since I couldn't find any mention of this movie here on the forum, I decided to pull your attention toward it—I caught it a few days ago and it's been rattling around my head.

It’s essentially a historical "horror" thriller set in medieval USA during the Black Death. The plot follows a group of warriors sent out by a Bishop to investigate some remote village that—allegedly—isn't being ravaged by the plague sweeping through the rest of the country.
The film digs into the historical reasons behind the killings of so-called witches, using a period setting to frame the narrative. Interestingly, instead of just relying on mindless, blood-soaked slaughter where the only goal is to splash red paint everywhere, it tries to convey brutality through the actual suffering of the people living through it.
The acting is solid—Boromir really carries the weight of the film, though I’d say the rest of the cast holds their own quite well too.

In my view, the film achieves exactly what it sets out to do, which is why I'm starting this thread. If someone else has already pointed this one out elsewhere, my apologies. 🤷

I caught this on one of those sketchy channels and honestly? I loved it. It’s not just your typical flick where a bunch of warriors roll into some spooky village and "beat the shit out of a necromancer." It takes a totally different path, there's even a little twist, and man, that ending showing what happened to young Osmond really stuck with me. I was already picturing a sequel with him in the lead!
Also, Carice van Houten was incredible as the ruler of Langiva—I kept thinking she looked just like Galadriel from LOTR. And let's be real, roles like this were basically made for Sean Bean.
The colors feel a bit washed out, but I think it actually works to capture that gritty, dark atmosphere.
