There are three ways moderators, supermoderators, and admins can penalize users on Reddit.
Direct bans. The administration has the authority to issue a direct, temporary Ban to any user. The duration is at the discretion of the moderator issuing the penalty, ranging from a few hours to several months, or even a permanent Ban. While under a Ban, a user is prohibited from posting anywhere on the Reddit site (with the exception of the ban corner) and cannot use Direct messages.
2. Cardboard boxes. There are two types of warnings: red and yellow. A yellow card serves as a warning and doesn't carry any penalty points. A red card is an actual penalty and carries a specific number of infraction points (usually anywhere from 10 to 1,000). These cards also have a set duration, which can even be permanent. Once a card expires, the associated penalty points are wiped from the user's record. You need to distinguish between the duration of a card and the duration of a Ban.
If a user hits the 100, 200, 300, or 400 point threshold by any means, the system issues an automatic 3-day Ban. Crossing 500, 600, 700, 800, or 900 points results in a 7-day Ban. Once they reach 1,000 points, the Ban is permanent.

3. Partial BansIf a user is being a nuisance to moderators on one specific subreddit but remains helpful in another, those mods can request a partial ban for their section. This essentially makes that subreddit invisible to the user, as if it never existed. It’s a permanent ban. We only pull this lever in extreme cases where someone is toxic in one area but actually contributes value elsewhere.
Additional notes. In the event that a user feels they have been treated unfairly...

I can't believe people are still arguing about this on Reddit. It’s honestly exhausting to watch.

Additionally, every user can check their own history of warnings and their current total penalty points. You can view this on your profile under Thread Display mode.
Infractions.

I can't believe I'm even looking at this. It's absolute nonsense.
