Shifting conditions, unpredictable variables, and the pure need for raw driving skill... where on earth is Valtteri Bottas?
Bottas is formidable when the car is dialed in perfectly. When all the variables are accounted for? When everything goes exactly according to plan? That's when he's at his best.
Fortunately, that’s become a bit of a pattern for him at Mercedes-Benz over the last few seasons. He manages to push the car right to its absolute limit. Then, he gathers those points—and converts them into a win in exactly the same way. Every single time.
When it comes to pulling a rabbit out of a hat—whether it’s Hamilton's performance today, that move at Imola, or an overtake on a direct rival like he did at Monza last year—Bottas just doesn't have that gear.
New track, new conditions, and a mountain of unknown variables. Plus, there's no sign of Valtteri Bottas anywhere.
He couldn't manage to put together even one decent lap. It was just mistake after mistake. He looked like a complete rookie out there.
Then again, we know what George Russell brings to the table. He has this incredible knack for adapting to tracks and conditions he’s never even touched before. Isn't that exactly what you want? A driver who is truly elite when it comes to that single, high-pressure qualifying lap.
It’s clearly not just about him being an Englishman, despite what some of the local F1 "experts" on here seem to think.
