So, how does one actually pull that off?

Fine, go study it then:

What "last rectangular icon"? I can't even see one while looking at your original post.
I just printed out the quote from Jacob Foster11😳 who says the first and easiest way is to just hit the button... in the writing form, etc...

Where is this button? It isn't there!!! You have to click Quote just to get to this page and actually see the damn thing.
I've had enough. I don't need any more "teachers" like this!!!

btw. Morgan Ramos, you’ve got that icon over here too, not just next to the Quick Response (in case you missed it)

Man, if only she were as reliable as Andress.

I think I finally figured out how this thing works, though it took some serious mental heavy lifting and digging through all these threads to pick up the pieces.
I’m done for now, but tomorrow I’ll lay it all out so even the absolute idiots can grasp it immediately.

🤷 I honestly can't wrap my head around this—I'm sure it's simple enough, but I just don't get the logic here.😕

Maybe I can break it down for you like this:
Code:
part of the post outside and above the outer quote

inside the outer quote, outside and above the inner quote

inside both the outer and inner quotes

inside the outer quote, outside and below the inner quote

part of the post outside and below the outer quote

je'l clearer now?

Result:

part of the post outside and above the outer quote
inside the outer quote, outside and above the inner quote
Quote:
inside both the outer and inner quotes
inside the outer quote, outside and below the inner quote
part of the post outside and below the outer quote

Now, are you clicking "-Quote-" right under the post you're quoting, or are you hitting that little bubble button on the far right in the "Quick Response" section? 😵

Nice ideas! All you’re missing now is your own name in the post and that little arrow pointing back to the original thread. How did you even pull this off here?

Response 1

can someone tell me which of my quotes actually looks okay?

Response 2

Alright, I’m gonna run through this again with a full breakdown of every single mouse click, since apparently everyone else keeps forgetting how important that is. Every little click matters, and where you click matters even more. Step by step!
I had this one coworker from overseas who used to tell me all the time: "I'm stupid, that's why please explain step by step."

Alright, slow down. Regarding arsarita's post asking: "Can someone please tell me which of my quotes looks okay?"
1. Just hit that Quote icon on the bottom left.
2. You'll get the whole block of text with
"quote=arsarita;23933246]Please can someone answer which of my quotes is okay?/quote",
I skipped the brackets and the big Q because this stupid machine thinks they're commands if you aren't careful.
3. Now just delete the part—that's the one at the end with the slash.
4. Put your cursor right after the word "someone" so you can split the text into two quotes (or however many you want), then hit Enter to separate the second part like I did below. The first quote stays put.
5. Click that yellow square icon (the fourth one from the right) to get "quote" and "/quote". I'm typing them in lowercase without brackets so the PC doesn't freak out, but you should use the actual uppercase version with [].
6. Highlight , then Copy/Paste it right after the word "someone" in that first line.
7. Now just write your comment for the first quote.

8. Grab "quote" (again, I'm typing it small and without brackets, but use the stuff from step 5) and Copy/Paste it before the word "answer" in the second quote below.
9. Grab the "/quote" from step 5 and Copy/Paste it at the very end of the second quote, just like you see here.

answer which of my quotes is ok?

Now type your comment for the second quote.

That's it. Done. Looks like a total headache, but it's not. Once you do it once, it's easy.
Gonna send the reply now and see how it actually looks.

What do you think, Andress? Did I get it right? Just don't laugh—she isn't quite that toothless, even if she's getting up there in years.

yeah, you'll figure it out eventually, no biggie.. You can't know everything at once😉

Do you agree?

(which you can also see under the Quick Response) that says "Quote Wrap

I'm testing how this looks because of that other (quote) stuck inside the middle of the third quote.

The text from the third quote starts at the beginning and ends with "Quote Wrap ended up being the response to the second quote, and then the rest of the third quote follows."

Asking the experts here: is there any way to neutralize that "quote" after "Wrap so the text of the third quote stays intact instead of just showing "-tags around selected text"?

Also, I noticed the author link is missing.

I'll try again.

It seems like nobody else is getting the arrow link for this post either.

jadetrucker43 said:If you’re looking to pull in a few different posts at once, just hit that "Multi-Quote" option—it's right there next to the standard Quote button—for every message you want to reference, except for the very last one. Once you've tagged them all, just click the regular Quote button on that final post. Everything should automatically wrap itself in those quote tags, giving you the freedom to clean up any fluff, bold the parts that actually matter, or slide your own commentary in between the blocks of text. It's pretty straightforward, really.

Response to the first multi

[QUOTE="cosmicskipper39, post: 382206, member: 654"]You can even do it "manually" if you want.
AltGr + F = [
AltGr + G = ]
Just type this at the start:
[quote.] (leave out the period)
Then wrap it up with this at the end:
[/quote.](no period here either)
Response to the second

Pangloss;23521809 said:Just highlight the specific text you want to reply to and click this last rectangular icon (which you can also find down in the Quick Response section) that says "Wrap

Response to the third.

Fine.

Yeah

Exactly

tags around selected text"

It works this way too

Look, I just got the link to the original text. Let's see how that plays out.

My response. Nobody asked for the username to be included in the first quote. Basically, if you want the link, you have to include the actual text along with the username.

Look, if you're trying to get that little arrow icon and a direct link back to the original post you're quoting, you've got to copy the whole header—basically this specific chunk right here:
Hodanac;28449224 said:

Now, if you don't care about the link but still want the person's name to show up next to the quote, just put their username after the equals sign, like this:
Hodanac said:

And honestly, if you just want a plain quote without any names or links cluttering things up, a simple
does the trick.

Just remember, all those quotes need to be closed off using the same old method:

Oh boy, when guys try to explain things... 🤦 😁

Okay, let’s try this. Just forget about all those little buttons, arrows, squares, rectangles, "Progressive Options," "Quick Response," "Wrap Quote," "Multi-quote" ..... Everything. Just wipe it from your brain!
  • There’s actually a thing called BBCode. If you’re feeling curious, feel free to check out some examples at this link to see how to use BBCode.
  • The whole system works by having a start and an end command—basically, every instruction has its own head and its own tail.
  • All commands are written inside square brackets [ ].
  • The only difference between the start and the end of a command is the slash sign / which tells the system the command is closing.

So, generally speaking, here is the absolute basics

  • The command for quoting is QUOTE. So, whenever you want to quote some text, you need to start the quote with
and then close it with [/QUOTE]
  • Every single quote has to have its own beginning and its own end.
  • Multi-quote is really just listing Quote-based blocks one after another.

Basically...

Code:
First text

Your response

Code:
Second text

Your response

Code:
Third text

Your response

How do I find the post number I'm quoting?
If you want a quote that actually links back to the original post—super handy!—just hit that Quote button in the bottom right corner of any post.
  • ;some_number included; --that number right there is the ID for the specific post you're quoting!

Multi-quote one single post from one user
Once you've used the "Quote" button and grabbed that post number, you can split up the text however you like! Just make sure you start the quoted section with

username;post_number said: and wrap it up with
Let's say you want to break up the sentence "She sells sea shells at the sea shore" using a Multi-quote.

Here is how you do it:

Code:
Jose Johnson79;28450911 said:sea shells

Once again, check out the FAQ - Quoting and FAQ - Multi-quote.

Just a heads-up: The forum has this "Multi-quote" feature that people talk about constantly, but honestly? That little button just automatically handles the keywords for you. The real kicker is understanding why a quote is formatted the way it is. Just remember: every opening tag needs its matching closing tag.
