Plot: A high-stakes thriller where a journalist and a congressman get tangled up in two murder cases that seem totally unrelated at first. Russell Crowe plays Cal McCaffrey, an investigative reporter who just can't let a mystery go, especially one involving deep political circles. Then you've got this charismatic congressman, Stephen Collins, sitting on the defense spending oversight committee—basically the golden boy of his party. All eyes are on him until his assistant (and lover) turns up dead. That's when the walls start closing in... McCaffrey’s editor wants answers, but there's a catch: the congressman is actually a good friend, making the whole investigation feel pretty dirty. As he and his partner dig for the killer, they stumble onto a massive secret that could shake the entire country. In a city full of wealthy doctors and power-hungry politicians, they're about to find out that when millions of dollars are on the line, nobody's reputation, love, or life is safe...

- The script was a heavy-hitter collaboration between Matthew Michael Carnahan ('the lamb and the lion'), Tony Gilroy (the 'Bourne' series), and Billy Ray ('the rift'). Plus, the production team has worked on huge stuff like 'Frost / Nixon', 'burn after reading', and 'atonement'.

- Brad Pitt was actually the top choice for the lead role before it went to Russell Crowe

- Edward Norton also dropped out of the project, reportedly because Brad Pitt left, which led to Ben Affleck stepping in instead

Honestly, I watched this one quite a while ago, but if my memory serves me right, it was a fantastic film. You had an incredible cast, a gripping narrative, and a story that felt well-paced and thematic—everything just clicked into place. Russell Crowe is stellar, as always, and I actually thought Ben Affleck was above average here; he really held his own in this role. Rachel McAdams is wonderful as usual, and the supporting cast—Helen Mirren, Robin Wright, and Jeff Daniels—were all top-tier performers.
I didn't have any doubts about this one; it’s one of those reliable combinations where you know the quality will be there. It definitely earns a high rating from me and comes with a full recommendation.

Like others have already pointed out, the cast is just incredible and they all delivered top-tier performances... I have to say, even Ben Affleck caught me completely off guard with how good he was here.
I was particularly drawn to the pacing; it starts off at a measured crawl, but with every passing scene, the tension ramps up and builds more intensity, meaning there isn't a single wasted moment or any unnecessary filler to slow things down.
I should probably mention that the movie clocks in at over two hours, but honestly, that doesn't pose even the slightest issue for the viewer because that constant sense of escalation keeps you glued to the screen, making it impossible to think about anything else besides what's unfolding right in front of you...

Caught it on Netflix yesterday. Honestly? It was a total masterpiece—exactly the kind of blockbuster Spielberg would lose his mind over. Just a perfect night in, kicking back with a big bowl of popcorn and my girl on my arm.
