The plot sounds a bit hazy to me, too. I definitely agree that a sequel feels completely unnecessary here, but I'll still give it a watch regardless. I'm curious to see how they handle it.

Donnie Darko is essentially an antisocial teenager struggling with schizophrenia, constantly tormented by his peers at school, who spends every night before bed taking pills that actually intensify his visions... which he then recounts to the psychiatrist his parents hired to help him, if anyone recalls, who near the end insists on increasing his dosage..
The movie is packed with great 80s tracks—Gary Jules, Tears for Fears, Duran Duran... It’s quite symbolic and carries a lot of weight..
I wouldn't go so far as to say the film is a masterpiece... but it's good and certainly deserves some attention.😁

I love this movie; I find it fascinating how I experience it differently every single time I watch it.
A sequel?!?! NOOOOO!!! Personally, I won't even view it as a true sequel, just a blatant cash grab riding on the coattails of something actually good.

What an idiot. I mean, the original is still going to be great. But where did they even get the idea to make a sequel? It was this beautiful, original allegory that should have been told exactly how it was told, and then just end. This isn't some retarded teen sci-fi flick.😢

I just finished watching this and honestly, I’m torn between tearing it apart or giving it credit (though I definitely won't be doing the latter). 😛
So, is the movie actually complete trash like I anticipated, or have my standards just hit rock bottom? Here is what I will say: if you watch this entirely on its own, without any prior knowledge of Donnie Darko, it definitely deserves more than its current 4.2 on IMDb. In that vacuum, I’d probably give it a solid 7/10.
But let’s be real—90% of the people watching S. Darko are going to know all about Donnie, so that low 4.2 rating makes perfect sense, maybe even lower. You can't really view this as a Sequel; it feels more like a cheap, low-budget rip-off of the original. The whole thing relies on pale, poorly executed imitations of tropes from Donnie (the sky, the countdown, the waking up, the rabbit, that weird thing coming out of the body, the party scenes, the cinema screen, the camera speed ramps, several identical lines of dialogue, and a truly terrible attempt at an ending), yet it adds almost zero originality. What’s worse is that the few new things they added just end up making the copied parts look even more blatant. ☕
When I add it all up, I really do have plenty of reasons to bash this film, and I’m not even sure why I tried to find a silver lining in the first place. I have no intention of revisiting this, and hopefully, after a few more viewings of Donnie Darko, this unnecessary mistake will fade completely from my mind.

Yet Another "Donnie Darko" Sequel?
20th Century Studios is pushing ahead with yet another "Donnie Darko" sequel, and word is Richard Kelly might actually be back reports Bloody Disgusting.
Kelly wrote and directed the 2001 cult hit featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, but he famously stayed away from that cheap direct-to-video follow-up, "S. Darko". That one, which focused on a side character from the original, just dropped last month.
The site mentions Kelly might actually be involved on some level but details are early so there's no official word on the plot yet.

I guess I went a little gray there—for a second, I actually thought some rapper with the same name was tied to the movie😁 on topic, I’ll give it a shot... though, honestly, once I remember how much people absolutely tore the original to pieces, maybe I should just wait a few years until someone decides the sequel is a masterpiece so I can be on the right side of history... if it actually turns out to be any good. One of these days...🤣
