So, look, I’ve been dealing with this thing where I talk through my nose—not all the time, mind you, just occasionally—and I was wondering if anyone here actually knows the deal with that. Has anyone found any real solutions or gotten any actual help for it?

Hey there!

So, I’ve basically been talking through my nose since I was a little kid—honestly, it's still pretty noticeable even if it's toned down a bit now.
I dealt with a ton of issues with it back in the day, and yeah, it still pops up sometimes.
The thing is, I tend to sound kind of lighthearted or unserious when I’m trying to talk about heavy stuff, which totally messes with how people perceive the actual problem. It’s like, how am I supposed to be taken seriously if my voice isn't cooperating?
Does anyone know if there’s actually a way to fix this?

God!

My advice:
Get a referral from your primary care physician and go see a specialist.
If they tell you there’s a deviated septum, just get the surgery.
You spend five days in the hospital, but afterward, you feel like a newborn!
I went through the same thing, and I can't even describe the feeling of finally being able to breathe properly after dealing with that septum and polyps.

Good luck!

God!

I had my nose surgery back in 2000, so if I can offer any advice: get a specialist consultation first. That’s the only way to know exactly what you're dealing with.
If breathing is an issue due to a deviated septum or polyps, don't hesitate.
Once you can actually breathe through your nose again, it feels like a total rebirth.

Good luck!

I couldn't find anything else like this—nothing about speech impediments specifically either—so I figured I'd just start my own thread. Mods, please feel free to move this wherever it fits best!

So, here's the deal. I'm 25, and I've dealt with this constant nasal sound in my voice since forever. Honestly, it’s gotten to the point where it's really messing with my head... I find myself avoiding talking altogether because I don't want to deal with it. It makes me come across as super shy or quiet, especially when I'm hanging out with a new crowd.

Back in the day—like, ten years ago—I actually tried some speech therapy exercises, but nothing really stuck. And now? I'm realizing I just can't keep living like this. I haven't been able to "fix" how I talk through practice, but I'm starting to wonder if surgery might actually be an option. My nose always feels congested way up high in the sinus area, and I have this gut feeling that's exactly why I sound the way I do. Does anyone know anything about this? Like, what actually causes this kind of speech pattern, and is there a real way to fix it?

Go see an ENT.
That nasal tone you've got might just be some sinus polyps or maybe even enlarged adenoids, which is honestly pretty easy to fix.

gotcha, thanks. do I need to grab a referral from my primary doctor first or how does the whole process work?

Just hit up your family doctor for a referral, then you can see the ENT specialist.

Good luck!

I’m 18 years old and I have a pretty noticeable nasal voice.
Is there any way to fix this, maybe through surgery? I'd love to hear more about it if anyone has some insight. 🙂

Hello there. Back when I was a kid, I took a pretty hard hit to the nose, which ended up causing a deviated septum. Because of that, my speech has always sounded a bit nasal, and I deal with this constant whistling sound when I talk. Everything was perfectly fine with my breathing and my voice before that accident happened... Is surgery really the only way to fix this? It feels like there hasn't been much discussion on this topic lately, so I’d really appreciate an answer from an expert or maybe someone who has gone through something similar.

Hi everyone, I was hoping I could get some advice from you all. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had a bit of a nasal quality to my voice. Since my job keeps me in constant contact with so many different people, it’s starting to feel like a bit of an issue. Also, whenever I record myself on my phone, my voice sounds really specific—almost strange—to my own ears. I guess I'm wondering if there's actually any way to change this?

p.s. I'm not entirely sure if it's related, but I deal with chronic sinus issues and allergic rhinitis quite often. I've been relying on medication for that for a very long time now. Any help would be much appreciated!
