Best MP4 to AVI converter?

I grabbed a movie off a torrent site recently, but I didn't realize until it was too late that it was in MP4 format. It plays perfectly fine on my computer with subtitles and everything, but once I burn it to a DVD and try to play it through my home theater system, it’s like the disc doesn't even exist—there isn't even an icon showing up. It seems like my home theater setup will only recognize AVI files.
Anyhow... does anyone know of a reliable converter out there?
I tried using one once for a movie that was at least an hour long, but halfway through, the program's name just started flashing right in the middle of the screen.🙄

Supposedly this one is freeware. I haven't tested it myself, but it's straightforward enough that I assume it works...

I use a program called Super, and honestly, I have nothing but praise for it and its supported formats.
My only concern is whether you'll see a drop in quality when converting to AVI.

I'd suggest downloading the tool yourself—it’s primarily command-line based, though there are plenty of frontends (graphical interfaces) out there if you prefer clicking buttons... It isn't just free, it's open-source, which means certainly you won't be running into any shady business or licensing headaches. If this specific version is built correctly—I can't verify that myself since I don't have Windows handy—it should support more formats than most of us have ever even heard of. 😁

Honestly, most of the converters I've come across for Windows seem to be nothing more than ffmpeg wrapped in some flashy little interface... the actual heavy lifting is done by the free ffmpeg engine, yet people end up shelling out $30 for that pretty UI. What a rip-off. 🤷

So, I just started converting this video to AVI using Adobe Premiere Pro, but it’s been sitting there at 0% for at least five minutes now, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if anything actually happens.
And then there's this whole thing with FFmpeg where I tried to download the tool, but it just keeps redirecting me over to http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/ and honestly, I have no clue what the next step is supposed to be.🙏I mean, really:
since I've never actually bought or ordered anything online before, I'm definitely not looking to drop any money on software right now.😍

So, I tried converting a file using Adobe Premiere Pro into an AVI format, and the quality is just devastating. When I compare it to the original MP4 version, the difference is night and day.
I don't really understand why mine turned out so poorly when all my other movies in AVI format look perfectly fine? Does this kind of thing happen during every single conversion process, or is it specifically something that only happens with the AVI format?😕

Working with digital video is such a deceptively tricky business... most of those "one-click" little tools you find online usually do a pretty terrible job. Not to mention that when you're transcoding from one lossy format to another, you're always going to lose some bit of quality—you can try to minimize the damage, sure, but you can never truly escape it.

If I'm following you correctly, the file you downloaded has an .mp4 extension? Honestly, just try renaming it to .avi... if your media player is smart enough, it might just figure out what to do on its own.😉

Anyway, personally, I haven't really noticed any noticeable difference in quality after running my conversions through it.
